Background / History

Hui served as the Bronze Tree Tribe's Shaman before Lu Xingshi's arrival. When Lu awakened a flawless Bronze Bloodline, Hui immediately recognized him as a born Shaman, arranged a camp tent for him, and began teaching him the tribe's inheritance: herbs, medicine, divination, weather, farming, writing, and Totem-related knowledge 504.

He also confirmed Ke's Shaman aptitude despite Ke's unprecedentedly poor lower-middle Bronze Bloodline concentration. Hui accepted both Lu and Ke as learners, though Lu's rapid mastery of Shamanic knowledge and successful control of the Bronze Tree Totem soon contrasted sharply with Ke's poor progress and impatience 505 506.

As the Bronze Royal Court demanded warriors for war, Hui committed two hundred Totem Warriors under Chief Li's command, trusting the Royal Court's promise of protection and deeper inheritance. The decision proved disastrous: the warriors and Li died on the battlefield, severely weakening the tribe 508 517. Hui subsequently decided to migrate the tribe and sent Lu and Ke to the Bronze Royal Court for further study, partly to protect them 517.

Hui gradually lost faith in the Bronze Royal Court after Lu was expelled and the tribe received little meaningful aid against the Black and White Calamities. He and Lu developed a plan to relocate while preserving the Bronze Tree Totem through its seed, allowing the tribe to evade an alliance that otherwise could not be openly dissolved 532.

During the tribe's migration, Hui and Lu were pursued for seven days by the Black and White Calamities, which had been drawn to the Bronze Tree Totem. Hui became too exhausted to continue and urged Lu to flee with the Bronze Tree Fruit, but the two were rescued by twelve Royal Court Envoys 539 540.

After the Royal Courts began searching for Kui, the Bronze Shaman King's offspring, Hui repeatedly denied that Kui was in the tribe. He understood that admitting the truth would invite the Bronze Tree Tribe's destruction, and his relationship with Royal Court Envoy Jiu became distant as the Royal Court's threats escalated 570 571.

Hui is an exceptionally large and physically formidable Shaman, described as a four-meter-tall strongman rather than a frail ritual specialist 516.

As a teacher, he recognizes talent quickly and gives Lu considerable freedom to explore the Totem, while repeatedly urging Ke to first build a proper foundation in Shamanic knowledge 506. He later supports Wo's growth as a Shaman and helps enforce Lu's demanding study regimen 565 570.

Hui can also be politically shrewd. He conceals information from hostile outsiders, uses diplomacy and misdirection against the Royal Court, and works with Lu to extract compensation from Yue and Chuan before removing Yue's name from the Bronze Tree Totem 542 571.

Royal Court War and Migration

Hui sends the tribe's warriors to the Bronze Royal Court War, then faces the consequences when the force is annihilated. With the Black and White Calamities approaching and the Royal Court unwilling to help, he begins planning the tribe's migration 508 517.

Break with the Bronze Royal Court

After Lu's mistreatment at the Royal Court, Hui concludes that the Bronze Tree Tribe cannot rely on its supposed protector. He works around the alliance rather than openly breaking it, planning to replant the Bronze Tree Totem from its seed after migration 532.

Defense of the Bronze Tree Tribe

Hui helps conceal Kui from the Bronze Shaman King, withstands Royal Court pressure, and supports Wo in defending the tribe against Envoy Yi. His refusal to compromise reflects his complete loss of trust in the Royal Court 568 571.
