Background / History
Sarutobi Hiruzen recognized Orochimaru’s talent and inner darkness, took him as a disciple, and cared for him like a father. Together with Tsunade and Jiraiya, Orochimaru found genuine companionship and let go of his earlier hatred. War subsequently convinced him that life was too fragile to support his pursuit of truth. He began seeking immortality as the time necessary to investigate every ninjutsu, deliberately distancing himself from personal bonds 63.
Within the Legendary Sannin, Orochimaru handled the group’s darker responsibilities. His brilliance, pride, and independence allowed him to shoulder work that Tsunade was protected from and Jiraiya resisted. By the time his companions recognized how thoroughly he had become the Sannin’s dark side, their estrangement was difficult to reverse 309.
During the Third Shinobi World War, he commanded the Leaf’s forces at Kikyo Pass and refused to retreat before Sunagakure. He countered the Sand’s poison warfare by commissioning Ryūchi Cave snakes to spread poisons whose composition even he did not fully understand 314 381.
Appearance
Orochimaru has a pale, snake-like appearance 35 192 380.
- Eyes: Yellow-orange eyes with snake-like pupils 261 304.
- Facial features: Heavy eyeshadow and an unusually long tongue 35.
- Dawn clothing: Appears in a black robe patterned with red clouds 192.
- Unnatural movement: Can turn his neck through 180 degrees 192.
- Disguises: Uses human skin to impersonate others, including an ANBU operative and a Grass Village exam participant 64 322.
Personality
Orochimaru treats techniques as the central object of his life and people as instruments for understanding them. He feels little guilt over human experimentation because he regards it as the development and application of ninjutsu. Immortality is not simply a desire to survive: it is a prerequisite for completing research that an ordinary lifespan cannot contain 63 65 238.
He is capable of enduring profound isolation without wavering in his chosen path. Conflict usually irritates him because it interrupts his work, and adequate funding can keep him almost entirely within his laboratory. Destroying his equipment or research data, however, provokes prolonged retaliation even when revenge offers no practical benefit 237 261.
His cooperation is pragmatic rather than loyal. He trades intelligence between competing factions, distrusts promises of future rewards, and readily abandons associates when useful. Research is the notable exception: Shingen trusts his scientific seriousness despite distrusting nearly everything else he says 238 263 326 437.
Orochimaru prefers observing and manipulating political conflict to bearing the responsibilities of office. Sound Village exists to serve his research, not the reverse. Although he admits some resentment over failing to become Hokage, the authority and burdens of that position hold little attraction for him 304 322.
His emotional detachment is incomplete. He spares Jiraiya after defeating him, reacts to reminders of their shared past, and becomes unusually excited when demonstrating his achievements before Hiruzen. His eventual victory over his former teacher serves as a declaration that he no longer depends on him or belongs to Konoha 65 237 332 358.
Abilities & Skills
Ryūchi Cave Sage Arts
- Integrates sage arts into his physiology, strengthening his body and supporting the bodily alterations behind many snake techniques 35 63.
- Gains regeneration and chakra reserves beyond those of ordinary people 53.
- Limit: Cannot enter conventional Sage Mode because of problems with his body; the White Snake Sage regards his partial integration as a qualified success 35.
Great Snake Style and Summoning
- Created the Great Snake Style system by combining bodily enhancement with Ryūchi Cave summoning 49 53.
- Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Summons snakes from Ryūchi Cave; the user’s strength determines their number and size 49.
- Hidden Shadow Multi Snake Hands: Primarily captures opponents, with venom and concealed ambush methods supplementing restraint 53.
- Summons Manda for large-scale combat and other giant snakes as transportation 51 65 322.
- Uses miniature snakes for intelligence gathering and intelligent snakes to track targets by pheromones 63 322.
- Limit: Shingen’s superior standing as a Ryūchi Cave inheritor restricts these methods. He can intimidate Orochimaru’s snakes and dismiss their summons 50 53 322.
Snake Style Substitution and Modified Physiology
- Invented Snake Style Substitution, shedding a damaged body and emerging from it in a replacement body 35 49.
- Each substitution produces an entirely new body, invalidating Flying Thunder God marks placed on the previous one 49.
- Endures freezing, severe bodily deformation, and injuries that would kill an ordinary person 49.
- Resists Shingen’s three-tomoe Sharingan genjutsu through his unusual body and chakra system 49.
- Retains exceptional movement speed through bodily modification even without using chakra 323.
- Shingen later suspects that space-time principles contribute to the substitution technique, rather than it relying entirely on soft-body modification 226.
Cursed Seal
- Developed a shortcut to Ryūchi Cave senjutsu power and a means of advancing his immortality technique 238 354.
- Tested the initial version on himself and subsequently established a first generation of seal-bearing Sound ninja 238 305.
- Preserves transformation capabilities derived from Ryūchi Cave’s sage arts 305.
- Collaborated with Shingen on a version more effective than he originally expected 322.
- Limit: His original seal can kill recipients. Shingen’s adaptation is considerably gentler but has different compatibility restrictions 261 305.
Eight-Headed Serpent
- Uses the Cursed Seal to become an enormous serpent with eight heads, formidable physical strength, and regeneration 305.
- Can detach his true body from the transformed creature when retreat becomes necessary 305.
- Counters: Shingen’s Ninigi-no-Mikoto severs the heads through spatial manipulation and prevents regeneration. Black chakra rods then disrupt Orochimaru’s chakra and temporarily trap him within the transformation 305.
Space-Time Ninjutsu
- Developed a technique inspired by Flying Thunder God, incorporating ideas discussed during Cursed Seal research 323.
- Uses Cursed Seal bearers to establish or identify coordinates, compensating for his lack of the chakra-sensing talent required by Flying Thunder God 323.
- Escapes Shingen’s spatial lockdown and emerges from Kidomaru’s Cursed Seal 306 323.
- A later use produces a brief burst of another seal bearer’s chakra followed by its complete depletion 323.
Impure World Reincarnation
- Researches and improves the resurrection technique, seeking to preserve more of the deceased’s original strength 261 263.
- Targets Senju Muzoku partly because Muzoku had already improved the technique and could provide further insight 263.
- Successfully summons Madara and Muzoku, using emotional manipulation and threatening talisman-based control against Muzoku 333 334.
- His modified version emphasizes powerful individual combatants rather than the soldier-oriented applications associated with Tobirama and Muzoku 444.
- Limits: Madara expects Orochimaru’s control to be temporary. Reincarnation also restricts certain abilities requiring a living body, including some Rinnegan and Outer Path powers 333 489.
Elemental Ninjutsu and Combat
- Proficient in all five elemental transformations, with Yang Release as his primary alignment 65 305.
- Favors Wind Release among ordinary elemental techniques 65.
- Uses wind-driven dust and debris or Earth Release concealment to interfere with Sharingan perception 49 305.
- Is a taijutsu master, though Shingen’s combined Senju–Uchiha fighting style places him at a disadvantage 49.
- Prevents Jiraiya from preparing Sage Mode by maintaining pressure with forbidden techniques 65.
- Limit: His capture-and-poison-oriented offense is poorly suited to penetrating Susanoo 305.
Research, Intelligence, and Infiltration
- Is one of the few people to have read the entire Book of Seals 322.
- Remains informed about village events during ANBU imprisonment through miniature snakes 63.
- Infiltrates the Chūnin Exams despite Konoha’s security, replacing a Kusagakure participant 322.
- Investigates Wood Release, Uchiha and Senju bloodlines, resurrection, the Rinnegan, and the Sage of Six Paths’ secrets 237 263 304 381.
- Recognizes that Hashirama’s unique chakra and vitality cannot be reproduced through ordinary Wood Release experimentation; considers combining Uzumaki vitality with Uchiha power a more practical direction 237.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kusanagi Sword — Breaks Shingen’s chakra-metal short sword during their first documented fight 49.
- Snake venom — A regular weapon for capture and poisoning; gives Shingen a bottle of paralyzing venom 53 263.
- Underground laboratories — His most valued facilities, equipped with specialized machinery and traps disguised as research results 237 261.
- Senju Muzoku tissue samples — Maintains skin tissue in a cultivation tank for resurrection research 262 263.
- Human-skin disguises — Used for prison escape and exam infiltration 64 322.
- Control talismans — Threatens to use one to impose control over the reincarnated Muzoku 334.
Relationships
- Sarutobi Hiruzen — Teacher and former father figure. Orochimaru seeks to prove that he has surpassed him, ultimately defeating him and departing from Konoha 63 348 358.
- Jiraiya — Fellow Sannin, former companion, and ideological opponent. Orochimaru defeats him during his defection but leaves him alive 65.
- Tsunade — Fellow Sannin and genuine childhood companion whose path diverges from his after war and personal loss 63 65 237.
- Uchiha Shingen — Fellow Ryūchi Cave inheritor, repeated opponent, research collaborator, and largest customer. Their Cursed Seal work establishes intellectual compatibility without removing mutual suspicion 238 322 381 437.
- Mitarashi Anko — Former disciple. He emphasizes physical conditioning and extensive theoretical knowledge in her education; she recognizes and fears his dangerous combat expression 49 176.
- Kabuto Yakushi — Trusted assistant and loyal protégé. Orochimaru first noticed his hidden talent during the Third Shinobi World War and sought him out after defecting 262 284.
- Shimura Danzō — Former associate and research supporter. Orochimaru remembers his generosity after experiencing the difficulty of independently obtaining equipment 46 192 236.
- Manda — Giant snake summon used against Shingen and Jiraiya 51 65.
- Sasori — Hostile Dawn associate. Their disagreement over eternity is compounded by Orochimaru recruiting Kabuto away from him 166 167 262.
- Kakuzu — Dawn colleague whose Earth Grudge Fear fascinates him. Kakuzu rejects requests for research material; Orochimaru nevertheless considers him the Dawn member easiest to talk to 192 263.
- Uchiha Obito / Tobi — Transactional ally. Exchanges Impure World Reincarnation knowledge for Kumogakure’s research into Muzoku’s techniques 326.
- Rasa — Former wartime enemy and later business partner. Supplies giant-snake rental contracts and combat materials while privately considering Rasa a target 314 315 322.
- Uchiha Madara — Reincarnates him and offers apparent freedom after restoring his vitality; Madara remains threatening and confident that Orochimaru cannot control him indefinitely 333.
- Senju Muzoku — Resurrection target whose techniques Orochimaru wants to study. Attempts to direct his hostility against Leaf ninja after summoning him 263 334.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Arrest and Defection
Shingen initially uses Anko’s training as a way to investigate Orochimaru. Orochimaru interrupts their lesson and attacks, probing Shingen’s concealed abilities. Their fight exposes his extraordinary resilience and escalates into giant-snake combat before Jiraiya intervenes 48 49 51.
The confrontation coincides with raids on Root facilities and the discovery of human experiments and desecration involving the First Hokage. Cornered by Leaf ninja, Orochimaru fails to escape through substitution and Earth Release. Minato seals his chakra after his surrender; Orochimaru then advises his captors on restraining him properly 51 52 53.
He escapes ANBU imprisonment by impersonating an operative named Ren, leaving human skin behind. Jiraiya pursues him, but Orochimaru prevents Sage Mode preparation, defeats him without killing him, and leaves the village 64 65.
Dawn, Sound Village, and Uchiha Funding
After defecting, Orochimaru recruits Kabuto, joins Dawn’s activities, and establishes an underground research base in the Land of Rice Fields. Equipment costs become a serious concern, leading him to skim money from Dawn’s treasury 192 236 262.
Shingen offers equipment at twenty percent below its original price and medicinal materials in exchange for completed Cursed Seal technology. Orochimaru also arranges a Sound–Leaf alliance. Uchiha investment subsequently keeps him largely out of public view for three years 238 261.
His next funding effort centers on improving Impure World Reincarnation and cultivating Muzoku’s tissue. Shingen declines immediate investment but offers to reconsider once Orochimaru can restore the tissue’s vitality 262 263.
Chūnin Exam Schemes
Suspicion over a break-in at the Hokage Cemetery leads to another duel with Shingen. Orochimaru unveils the Eight-Headed Serpent but is overwhelmed by Shingen’s space-time dōjutsu and chakra rods. He escapes through Kidomaru’s seal, becoming more determined to investigate the Rinnegan 304 305 306.
He later infiltrates the Chūnin Exams as a Grass ninja, sounding out Shingen about cooperation against other villages and Dawn. He reveals contacts with multiple factions hostile to Konoha, promises not to desecrate previous Hokage, and demonstrates his new space-time escape technique 322 323.
Orochimaru then trades resurrection knowledge to Obito and confronts Hiruzen during the attack on Konoha. He summons Madara and Muzoku rather than the First and Second Hokage for that confrontation. After proving his superiority over Hiruzen, he leaves rather than attempting to claim the village 326 332 333 358.
Renewed Wartime Cooperation
Shingen pressures Orochimaru by threatening his laboratories, then offers research into Kekkei Mōra and Tailed Beast chakra. Their interests align around investigating the Sage of Six Paths’ secrets. Orochimaru cooperates with the Leaf army’s destruction of Sound Village in exchange for resources and laboratory support 380 381.
Despite this arrangement, Shingen later orders continued surveillance of Orochimaru because his improved resurrection technique can restore historically powerful individuals as major battlefield threats 444.

Trivia
- His laboratory matters more to him than conventional hospitality: when Shingen visits his new base, the laboratory is complete while most rooms remain unfinished 237.
- Orochimaru takes his own oaths seriously while remaining deeply suspicious of everyone else’s 304.
- His prolonged research seclusion becomes so complete that some Leaf villagers wonder whether he has died; Hiruzen correctly assumes he is conducting experiments somewhere 261.
- He refuses a celebratory handshake with Shingen because physical contact could allow Shingen to place a Flying Thunder God mark 238.
