Background / History

Madara was one of the Uchiha Clan's greatest heads and a co-founder of the Hidden Leaf Village. During his lifetime, he recorded Senju Hashirama's Wood Release techniques in the Uchiha archives, adding his own analyses so later generations could develop techniques suited to themselves. His work remained valuable to Uchiha Shingen long after Madara's era. 15

Though he and Senju Hashirama shared the desire to end war, Madara believed peace required strength and the law of the jungle rather than Hashirama's ideal of universal harmony. He eventually left the village after their political division, but was never formally regarded as a Leaf rogue ninja. 339 358

Madara's original Eye of the Moon Plan was based on the stone tablet attributed to Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki. He intended to gather the Tailed Beasts, control the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, recreate the Ten-Tails, and impose peace through the Infinite Tsukuyomi. 427

Return to the Hidden Leaf

Reanimated through Impure World Reincarnation, Madara awakens after Black Zetsu returns to the Hidden Leaf Village. Learning that an Uchiha with the Rinnegan exists in the modern era, he heads for the Uchiha Clan Compound. 335

At the compound, he defeats several Seven Ninja Swordsmen with overwhelming ease, then meets Uchiha Shingen, who recognizes him as the former clan head. The younger clan members receive Madara enthusiastically, while Madara initially rejects their attempts to treat him as their leader. 338 340

Madara's return gradually reconnects him with the clan. He regrets not allowing the Uchiha to leave with him in the past, reunites with Uchiha Setsuna, and takes an interest in the clan's continued strength and cohesion. 360 366 427

Appearance

Madara has long hair and wears antiquated dark-crimson Uchiha armor, making him visibly out of place in the modern era. His armor bears the Uchiha crest. 336 339 368

  • Long, flowing hair. 339
  • Dark-crimson armor associated with the Uchiha Clan. 339
  • Uses Sharingan, Mangekyō Sharingan, and Rinnegan depending on his level of exertion. 340 423
  • Retains Obito's eyes after his resurrection. 568

Personality

Madara is arrogant, blunt, and intensely dismissive of weakness. He frequently treats opponents as beneath his notice, yet he values genuine talent, perseverance, tactical intelligence, and a strong will. 338 427

Despite his harsh manner, he is deeply attached to the Uchiha Clan. He once preserved knowledge for future generations, respects Setsuna's lifelong devotion, and becomes noticeably more protective of younger clansmen after his return. 15 360 522

He is also a demanding mentor. Madara criticizes distraction and poor fundamentals, but recognizes potential quickly and is willing to train children such as Uchiha Yosuke, Uchiha Sasuke, and Uchiha Itachi. 368 393 515

Abilities & Skills

Dōjutsu

Madara is an exceptionally advanced wielder of the Sharingan lineage. His ocular power is the defining source of his combat strength and allows him to perceive chakra, control targets, analyze techniques, and wield Susanoo at an unmatched level. 340 513

  • Wields the Sharingan, Mangekyō Sharingan, and Rinnegan. 340 423
  • Uses Sharingan genjutsu to control Rasa and destroy his Sand Eye. 519
  • Perceives chakra well enough to distinguish constructs and battlefield details that evade most shinobi. 548
  • Gains Kamui after being restored with Obito's eyes. 568
  • Can use chakra black rods as weapons and to disrupt an opponent's chakra. 547

Rinnegan

Madara's Rinnegan formed after he acquired the chakra of both Indra and Ashura. It grants immense ocular power, access to the Six Paths, and techniques such as Planetary Devastation. 344

  • Can create multiple gravitational sources for Planetary Devastation, unlike users who directly designate one. 344
  • Developed the Blocking Technique Absorption Seal, a chakra membrane that absorbs ninjutsu while also blocking secondary environmental effects. 345
  • Uses Rinnegan chakra rods in close combat against Kinshiki Ōtsutsuki. 547
  • His Impure World Reincarnation state restricts some Rinnegan-exclusive and Outer Path abilities that require a living body. 489

Susanoo

Madara's Complete Body Susanoo is among the strongest in Uchiha history. It can wield weapons, perform hand seals, cast ninjutsu, and engage in precise taijutsu as an extension of its user. 21 355

  • Forms Susanoo faster and on a larger scale after recovering his living body. 570
  • Uses dual Susanoo blades with exceptional swordsmanship. 356
  • Can cast Fire Release: Great Fire Annihilation Arrows through Susanoo. 354
  • Uses the Yata Mirror Technique to block powerful attacks. 354
  • Breaches Momoshiki and Kinshiki's chakra sphere with Susanoo and the Eighty Gods Vacuum Attack. 549
  • His Edo Tensei Susanoo is below the strength he possessed while alive. 357

Ninjutsu Mastery

Madara mastered all five elemental transformations and built his reputation on a broad, practical command of standard ninjutsu before relying on Susanoo. 513

  • Uses Fire Release, Wind Release, Earth Release, and combined elemental techniques. 339 518 545
  • Employs Dragon Flame Song against Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki. 545
  • Uses Wind Release to maneuver and maintain aerial mobility. 339
  • Can use selected Wood Release techniques, including Wood Clones, Deep Forest Emergence, and Deep Forest Bloom. 552
  • Analyzes opponents' techniques and exploits their practical weaknesses rather than relying solely on raw power. 518 547

Taijutsu and Weapon Skill

Madara is proficient in both armed and unarmed combat, with no known weakness in martial fighting. 338

  • Catches and disarms the wielder of Nuibari barehanded. 338
  • Possesses enough physical power to kick away a Tailed Beast. 339
  • Trades high-speed taijutsu with Uchiha Shingen while using Wind Release without hand seals. 339
  • Deflects Kinshiki's chakra axe with a kick despite Kinshiki's superior physical attributes. 543

Impure World Reincarnation Physiology

As an Edo Tensei, Madara can use the reanimated body's resilience and near-limitless margin for error to study unfamiliar opponents. 547

  • Can recover from damage that would incapacitate a living body, including the loss of a leg during his battle with Shingen. 357 358
  • Suffers reduced chakra output and lower overall Susanoo performance compared with his living self. 357
  • Uses his reanimated state to test the Ōtsutsuki brothers' abilities while concealing much of his own arsenal. 547
