Background

The PB Drug released from the Moon spreads through brainwaves and magnetic fields, mutating as it passes between humans, animals, plants, and other organisms. Most infected humans die or degenerate, while only a small portion survive as New Humans. Mutant Humans emerge from the unstable, half-failed side of this evolutionary process. 13 15

During the apocalypse's first night, first-generation zombies complete their initial evolution and some begin genetic fusion into Mutant Humans. Their minds gradually regain clarity, but their humanity does not return; they are driven by negative emotions and hunger for living flesh and blood. 15

Appearance

Mutant Humans retain a humanoid form, but their bodies are reshaped by extreme, unbalanced genetic mutation. Their exact appearance varies by individual and original abilities.

• Enlarged, abnormal musculature can leave them barely recognizable as human. 10
• Some develop sharp fangs, blade-like nails, and predatory red eyes. 22 23
• Newly evolved specimens can withstand punishment far beyond that of ordinary humans or zombies. 22

Biology and Behavior

Failed Evolution

Mutant Humans are neither successful New Humans nor mindless zombies. Their Consciousness Seas are filled with loneliness, resentment, selfishness, and other negative emotions, producing intelligent but bloodthirsty predators. 15

• They possess extreme and unbalanced genes, giving them high short-term combat potential but poorer stability and potential than New Humans. 19
• They crave fresh flesh and blood, particularly the stable genes of New Humans. 15 33
• A New Human's bloodline scent attracts them like “honey to ants,” making weaker New Humans especially desirable prey. 33
• They may attack and devour other Mutant Humans rather than form cooperative groups during the early apocalypse. 15

Genetic Devouring

Mutant Humans evolve by consuming superior genes. If their bodies withstand the accumulated genetic traits rather than collapsing, their growth can become exceptionally dangerous. 15

• Consuming flesh and blood strengthens their genes and may grant varied abilities. 15
• Their ability sets can become mixed and unstable because they acquire traits through devouring. 15
• Powerful individuals can eventually become “kings” capable of commanding lower Mutant Humans and zombies. 15

Intelligence and Tactics

Unlike zombies, Mutant Humans can assess danger, retreat from unfavorable fights, and exploit weaker creatures.

• The Lawyer Building guard uses stones and metal fragments as ranged weapons while pursuing Mu Xiao and An Rongru. 31
• The same guard tests the security hall's defenses rather than repeatedly attacking one point. 33
• It lures a zombie horde to block Mu Xiao's route, intending to exhaust him before attacking. 33
• Mutant Humans can communicate with zombies and use them as expendable attackers. 33

Infection Risk

Mutant Human wounds carry altered PB-virus contamination.

• Prompt, proper treatment generally prevents infection after a Mutant Human attack. 15
• If a wound worsens and the virus overwhelms the victim's resistance, the victim can become a biochemical monster. 15

Mutant Humans can possess abilities shaped by their original host's knowledge, traits, or devoured genes.

• The guard Mutant Human produces a Life Detection Ability Source, which explains its ability to track Mu Xiao and An Rongru. 34

Notable Incidents

Lawyer Building Outbreak

When the PB Drug activates, several guards in the Lawyer Building's sealed chamber mutate. One female guard immediately kills and feeds on a non-mutated colleague, demonstrating the loss of human restraint that accompanies mutation. 10

Mechanical Engineer Mutant

A former female staff member remains in the Lawyer Building after mutating, ambushing Mu Xiao with superior speed, fangs, and clawed hands. She possesses 20 Gene Resonances and initially escapes after he injures her spine. 22

Mu Xiao later kills her by overdrawing his Mind Force to restrain her movement and striking through her skull. Her Evolutionary Power Source raises him to the eighteenth Gene Resonance, while her corpse yields Premium Blood Beads and Mechanical Mastery. 23 24

Guard Mutant Human

The guard whom Mu Xiao witnesses mutating in the sealed chamber later returns to hunt him and An Rongru. It pursues them through the city, attacks from range with debris, and tracks An Rongru's New Human bloodline. 31 33

During the siege of the security hall, it commands zombies as a delaying force and waits for Mu Xiao to expose an opening. An Rongru detonates nearby vehicles with the Thunderbolt Cannon, incapacitating the guard long enough for Mu Xiao to kill it with a telekinesis-empowered High-Vibration Electromagnetic Military Saber. 33 34
