Background and History

Tongtian is the youngest of the original Three Pure Ones. Unlike the contemplative Taiqing and rule-focused Yuanshi, he wandered Kunlun and the wider primordial world with a sword on his back, observing its mountains, rivers, and living beings. 1

When the Three Pure Ones discovered Xuan Heng's Dao embryo within the Twelve-Rank World-Purifying White Lotus, Tongtian was the first to rush to the site. Upon confirming that the embryo carried Pangu's clear qi, he readily accepted it as their Fourth Brother and vowed to oppose any fate that threatened him. 1 2

Before Xuan Heng took form, Tongtian visited the lotus pool most frequently. Rather than expounding abstruse Dao principles, he told Xuan Heng stories of the primordial world and demonstrated his swordsmanship, giving the isolated Dao embryo companionship and an early understanding of the world beyond Kunlun. 2

Tongtian supported Xuan Heng's decision to refine tribulation qi during the Dragon–Phoenix Calamity, arguing that Xuan Heng could not remain protected in Kunlun forever. Xuan Heng successfully took form soon afterward. 3 4

Afterward, Tongtian taught Xuan Heng sword arts, formations, and lessons learned from his travels. During the journey home from Purple Cloud Palace's first sermon, he obtained the Green Duckweed Sword from the Chaos Green Lotus remnant. 5 8

Appearance

Tongtian is commonly depicted as a free-roaming Daoist with a sword carried on his back. His presence is marked less by physical description than by the restrained sharpness of his Supreme Pure sword intent. 1 12

Personality

Tongtian is impulsive, candid, and free-spirited. He is quick to act—such as rushing toward the unknown clear qi north of Kunlun—and often clashes verbally with Yuanshi's caution and strictness. 1 2

Despite his playful manner, he is fiercely protective of family and disciples. He guarded Xuan Heng during his formation, raced to Xuan Heng's aid during Red Cloud's killing tribulation, and unleashed the Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation after Xuan Heng fell unconscious. 3 29 31

His Dao outlook centers on opportunity: he believes beings should not be excluded from seeking the Dao merely because their foundations are weak. This conviction became the basis of the Interception Sect. 45 51

Tongtian's openness does not mean tolerance for betrayal or cruelty. After the Heart Inquiry Array exposed corrupt disciples and Western infiltration, he expelled and imprisoned offenders, then made the examination a permanent Interception Sect practice. 57 58
