Background
Yuanshi was born on Kunlun Mountain alongside Taiqing and Tongtian after Pangu's Primordial Spirit transformed into the Three Pure Ones. As the Jade Pure One, he carried himself with immaculate robes and crown, and his immortal light kept Kunlun's spirit birds from causing trouble 1.
When the brothers discovered Xuan Heng's Dao embryo within the Twelve-Rank World-Purifying White Lotus, Yuanshi recognized Pangu's clear qi around it and was initially wary of accepting an unknown fourth brother. He ultimately agreed to shelter Xuan Heng in Kunlun, on the condition that he follow Kunlun's rules 1. During Xuan Heng's long gestation, Yuanshi regularly stabilized his clear qi, maintained the lotus pool's spiritual environment, and inspected the restrictions protecting him 2.
After Hongjun's third discourse, Yuanshi became Hongjun's personal disciple and received Primordial Violet Qi. Hongjun later bestowed the Pangu Banner upon him 20 21. Yuanshi attained sainthood by founding the Exposition Sect, whose purpose was to elucidate the Heavenly Dao, establish order, and guide cultivators toward the righteous path 51.
Appearance
Yuanshi is consistently presented as formal and immaculate, with a dignified bearing befitting the Jade Pure One.
- Wears immaculate Daoist robes and a crown 1.
- Surrounded by steady Jade Pure immortal light 1 51.
- Maintains a stern, composed expression even in tense situations.
- His saintly aura is described as weighty and orderly, like an invisible mountain within his Dao heart 46.
Personality
Yuanshi is cautious, disciplined, and deeply committed to order. He is often the first among his brothers to identify risks, whether concerning Xuan Heng's unstable origin, the danger of tribulation qi, or the consequences of loosely governed disciples 2 3 53.
Though blunt and strict, he is intensely protective of those he considers family. He personally monitored Xuan Heng's condition throughout his early development, defended him during Red Cloud's killing tribulation, and rejected Xuan Heng's guilt over the injuries the Three Pure Ones suffered protecting him 2 30 32. His concern commonly appears as criticism, inspections, and rules rather than overt affection.
Yuanshi values foundation, temperament, rites, and hierarchy in cultivation. However, he accepts Xuan Heng's warning that such standards must not become tools for humiliating disciples of lesser origins, leading him to adopt rules against using status or lineage to oppress fellow Exposition Sect members 45 53.
