Background / History
Xuan Heng first awakened as Zhou Heng, a fragile Dao embryo sheltered inside the Twelve-Rank World-Purifying White Lotus in a valley north of Kunlun Mountain. Because he shared Pangu's clear-qi origin with Taiqing, Yuanshi, and Tongtian, the Three Pure Ones accepted him as their Fourth Brother and jointly nurtured him in Kunlun for three epochs. Taiqing bestowed the Daoist name Xuan Heng, incorporating the character “Heng” that he chose for himself. 1 2
When the Dao–Devil conflict sent tribulation qi across the Primordial World, Xuan Heng deliberately drew the purified tribulation qi into his unfinished origin despite the danger. The ordeal enabled him to take human form as a youth, after which the World-Purifying White Lotus acknowledged him as its master. 3 4
He attended Hongjun's lectures at Purple Cloud Palace alongside his brothers. Hongjun gave him a unique small meditation cushion that separated him by a thread from the Heavenly Dao, later accepting him as a personal disciple while explaining that Primordial Violet Qi was incompatible with his Dao path. 7 20
After Hongjun privately revealed that he was not native to the Primordial World and addressed him by his original name, Zhou Heng, Xuan Heng received instruction in proving the Dao through laws. Hongjun identified his fundamental path as Profound Purity: world purification, Dao-heart stabilization, and calamity severance. 26 27
Xuan Heng repeatedly tried to preserve Red Cloud from his killing tribulation, but Red Cloud's body ultimately perished despite his intervention. The backlash left Xuan Heng unconscious for three thousand years; during that period, he experienced a calamity dream encompassing future disasters and his brothers' eventual conflict. He awakened having comprehended the Profound Pure Immortal Scripture and a less demanding inheritance art for disciples. 28 31 32
Appearance
After taking form, Xuan Heng appears as a clear-eyed Daoist youth of roughly sixteen or seventeen, with upright brows and a calm, limpid gaze characteristic of a newly born innate being. He initially wore a naturally formed white Daoist robe traced with faint lotus patterns. 4
- Profound-blue Profound Pure Immortal Light manifests from his brow after attaining Great Luo. 15 16
- The Twelve-Rank World-Purifying White Lotus can enter his brow and emerge at his command. 4
- He later wears the white-and-blue Profound Pure Treasure Robe, whose radiance conceals him from probing and deduction. 21 22
- His mature sword aura is represented by the blue-and-gold Profound Pure Calamity Severing Sword. 52
Personality
Xuan Heng is deliberate and forward-thinking. His knowledge of future calamities drives him to prepare rather than wait for disaster: he warns Red Cloud of Kunpeng's resentment, establishes the East Sea Life-Crossing Formation before humanity faces catastrophe, and urges the Three Pure Ones to prevent sectarian disagreements from destroying their brotherhood. 9 36 46
He is compassionate but not naïve. He shelters human settlements, purifies afflicted water beasts instead of killing them, and repeatedly helps Kong Xuan carry the Phoenix Clan's karmic burden. At the same time, he recognizes that kindness without caution can create danger, as shown by his blunt warning to Red Cloud. 9 43 56
As a teacher, he is protective, patient, and capable of stern discipline. He accepts Six Ears as a registered disciple under clear restrictions, rescues him from the Witch Clan, provides him the Six Pure Roots Bamboo, and later punishes both Six Ears and Kong Xuan when they act improperly. 10 24 25 50

Xuan Heng's personal immortal light is a profound-blue manifestation of his Profound Pure Great Dao. It specializes in purification, calming, suppressing calamity, and safeguarding the Dao heart. 15 16 27
- Purifies tribulation qi, demonic intent, and lingering battlefield baleful aura. 16 18
- Calms remnant souls and cleanses corrupted spiritual materials. 16 18
- Reveals and strips karmic burdens, including Kong Xuan's Phoenix Clan fire-baleful karma. 41 43

Profound Pure Immortal Scripture
The Profound Pure Immortal Scripture is Xuan Heng's foundational cultivation method. It uses tribulation qi, karmic force, demonic thoughts, and obsessions as material to temper his Dao Fruit and advance his law-based path. 32
- Refines purified calamity energy into the Law Dao Seed and later the Profound Pure Dao Tree. 33 44
- Allows him to distinguish whether killing tribulations arise from calculation or the greater tide of fate. 32
- Lets him refine karmic burdens drawn from other beings, provided he can preserve his Dao heart. 43
- Excessive refinement is dangerous; Yuanshi limits him to one wisp of fire-baleful karmic force per thousand years after reaching Quasi-Saint. 46
Profound Pure Immortal Art
A lower-threshold inheritance derived from his enlightenment, intended for disciples rather than Xuan Heng's own cultivation. 32
- Enables practitioners to condense Profound Pure Dao-Protecting Light. 32
- Warns the cultivator through spiritual pain when demonic qi, tribulation qi, illusions, baleful intent, or karma disturb the Dao heart. 32
- Helped Six Ears restrain his innate hearing when used alongside the Six Pure Roots Bamboo. 37
Swordsmanship and Calamity Severance
Although he does not consider himself a dedicated sword cultivator, Xuan Heng wields a sword path compatible with his Great Dao. His sword techniques emphasize cutting through karmic entanglements and purifying destructive forces. 19 48
- Reforged the corrupted broken sword found in an ancient battlefield into the Calamity Severing Sword. 18
- Used the sword to disrupt Zhunti's attempt to seize the Six Pure Roots Bamboo. 22
- Severed Zhunti's karmic connection to Kong Xuan and Six Ears during the attempted disciple theft. 48
- Refined sect-founding merit into the weapon, renaming it the Profound Pure Calamity Severing Sword. 52
Formation Craft
Xuan Heng is an accomplished formation planner whose work centers on protection, migration, and karmic judgment.
- Created the East Sea Life-Crossing Formation, a transfer formation with seventy-two guiding nodes designed to move human survivors to the East Sea shore during calamity. 36
- Activated Life-Transit Dark Seals during the Witch–Demon war to relocate Human Race members and organize their resettlement. 61
- Proposed the Heart-Questioning Formation for the Interception Sect, judging disciples by the karmic weight of unjust slaughter and cruelty rather than by their origins. 56

Story Role / Major Arcs
Red Cloud's Karmic Bond
Xuan Heng approaches Red Cloud after the first Purple Cloud Palace lecture, warns him that Kunpeng will resent the loss of his seat, and urges him to remain near Zhenyuanzi. When Red Cloud's killing tribulation arrives, Xuan Heng intervenes against Di Jun, Taiyi, Minghe, Kunpeng, Zhunti, and Receiving Guide, but can preserve only a wisp of Red Cloud's true spirit. 9 28 30
Establishing the Profound Pure Lineage
Following his calamity dream, Xuan Heng creates the Profound Pure Immortal Scripture and the disciple-oriented Profound Pure Immortal Art. He later accepts Six Ears and Kong Xuan, teaching them cultivation while using Kong Xuan's karmic burden to develop his own law-based Dao. 32 42 43
Protector of Humanity
Xuan Heng prepares the East Sea Life-Crossing Formation before the Human Race faces calamity. When the Witch–Demon war begins, he activates the formation to transport human survivors to safety, provides resources and leadership structure, and continues maintaining protections along the East Sea shore. 36 61 63
Preserving the Four Brothers' Unity
Fearing that the future sects of the Three Pure Ones could turn doctrinal differences into fratricide, Xuan Heng persuades his brothers to make a pact: their teachings may differ, but their common origin must not be forgotten. He later advocates separating their Dao grounds voluntarily so their sects can develop independently without breaking their brotherhood. 46 54
Sect Governance
After an altercation between Exposition and Interception disciples, Xuan Heng proposes rules against internal violence, establishes distinctions between inner and outer disciples, and insists that temperament matters alongside cultivation foundation. Tongtian appoints him Honorary Vice Sect Leader of the Interception Sect, while Yuanshi makes him Deputy Protectorate Leader of the Exposition Sect. 53
Conflict with the West
When Zhunti and Receiving Guide attempt to recruit—and then forcibly take—Kong Xuan and Six Ears, Xuan Heng emerges from seclusion and suppresses both Western quasi-sages. He severs their karmic influence over his disciples, wounds Zhunti twice, and demands Bodhi seeds, Seven Treasures Geng Metal Origin Qi, and Merit Golden Lotus dew as compensation. 47 48 49

“Not knowing is not knowing. Teaching blindly and teaching wrongly—that would be truly shameful.” 44
“What is being divided are the sacred grounds and the orthodoxies—not the brotherly bond between the four of us.” 54
Trivia
- Xuan Heng chose the character “Heng” from his original name, Zhou Heng; Taiqing added “Xuan” when granting his Daoist name. 2
- Hongjun later confirms that Xuan Heng's soul and body originate outside the Primordial World. 26
- The World-Purifying White Lotus contains a faint green trace after fusing with an azure lotus seed from the remnant Chaos Green Lotus. 8
- He is notably willing to seek help for his disciples' weaknesses, bringing Kong Xuan to Tongtian rather than pretending to understand sword Dao himself. 44
