Background / History

Yu Xiaogang is the son of Yu Yuanzhen, Sect Master of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. Yu Yuanzhen spent heavily to have him study at Spirit Hall in hopes that he could find a solution to his defective martial soul, but Yu Xiaogang was later expelled from Spirit Hall. 6 78

He arrived at Notting Academy as a newly hired Grand Soul Master and received accommodations normally reserved for elite teachers. He regarded the academy as a provincial backwater and intended to prove the value of his martial soul research. 6

When Xu Qianqian and Xiao Chenyu sought his guidance, Yu Xiaogang dismissed Qianqian as incapable of becoming a Soul Master because she lacked innate soul power. He likewise judged Xiao Chenyu's Wolf martial soul to be poor and predicted that Soul Ancestor would be his limit. 6

Unknown to him, Xu Qianqian activated her domain during this meeting and copied the contents of every book and note in his room. Although she later found much of his material erroneous, she considered its useful portions important to her early understanding of martial souls, soul power, Spirit Hall, and soul beasts. 7

After initially rejecting Xiao Chenyu, Yu Xiaogang later attempted to take him as a disciple. Xiao Chenyu declined politely, following Xu Qianqian's warning to keep his distance without openly offending him. 7

Yu Xiaogang accepted Tang San as his disciple and directed his early soul-ring path. His theories were subsequently criticized after a student following his teachings absorbed an unsuitable spirit ring, developed mismatched soul skills, and suffered severe consequences. 7 15 68

Xu Qianqian eventually repaid what she considered a debt to him: she arranged for the Nine-Grade Purple Ganoderma to be delivered through Yu Yuanzhen, providing a means for Yu Xiaogang to overcome his Rank 29 bottleneck and continue cultivating. 63 64 78

His confidence is closely tied to his reputation as a theorist. He reacts especially badly to accusations that his theories are plagiarized or fraudulent, becoming enraged when Xu Qianqian publicly challenges the origins and validity of his research. 68 269 289

Despite his harsh judgments toward others, he remains attached to Tang San and views him as proof of his own theories and future legacy. Even after Tang San begins questioning aspects of his guidance, Yu Xiaogang continues to defend his work. 14 15 68 292

Exposure at Heaven Dou Royal Academy

When Xu Qianqian reappears at Heaven Dou Royal Academy as a Rank 36 Soul Elder, Yu Xiaogang is shocked that a former Rank 0 non-cultivator has surpassed him. During the Continental Advanced Spirit Master Academy Elite Tournament, he challenges Qian Renxue's eligibility and Spirit Hall's fairness. Qian Daoliu exposes his false elder status and orders his arrest until Tang Chen confirms that the Clear Sky Sect lent him the token. 269 270
