Personality

Hiruzen is outwardly gentle, patient, and protective toward Konoha’s children. He treats Qianyu with concern after the Root attack, apologizes for the village’s failure, and chooses guidance over coercion. 13 15 16 He believes that shinobi should uphold the Will of Fire and serve Konoha openly and honorably, a belief Qianyu explicitly invokes when rejecting Danzo. 10

As Hokage, he can become forceful and uncompromising when Konoha’s laws or vulnerable residents are threatened. He openly forbids Root from targeting Qianyu, places the boy under his direct protection, and later declares Danzō an S-rank rogue ninja. 13 14 26

Hiruzen attends the Ninja Academy enrollment ceremony and takes a subtle interest in Qianyu. When Danzō argues that Qianyu’s resemblance to Madara makes him a threat, Hiruzen refuses to condemn a six-year-old child without proof. 4 5

Protection of Qianyu and Conflict with Root

After Root ninja attack Qianyu, Hiruzen personally intervenes and witnesses his Wood Release. He confronts Danzō, uses the Wood Release evidence to argue that Qianyu may possess Senju heritage, and forbids Root from acting against him. 12 13

Hiruzen theorizes that Qianyu could be a contingency connected to Tobirama’s preservation of the Senju bloodline. He places Qianyu under direct Hokage protection, keeps the Wood Release confidential, and summons Tsunade to ensure the child is not exploited. 14

Guiding Qianyu

Hiruzen probes Qianyu by offering him one request after the attack. Reassured when Qianyu only asks for his damaged home to be repaired, he orders Yamato to build a secure new house with Wood Release, hoping Qianyu will associate the power with safety rather than fear. 15 16

Qianyu challenges Hiruzen’s past prejudice and complicity in Konoha’s injustices. Hashirama and Tobirama then condemn Hiruzen for allowing political games, clan persecution, and human experimentation to undermine the village’s ideals. 40 41

Accepting their judgment but refusing to abandon his duty, Hiruzen performs the Reaper Death Seal against Orochimaru. Orochimaru evades the sealing through a Snake Clone, but Hiruzen dies with his duty fulfilled as Konoha’s defending Hokage. 41
