Background / History
The Autobots emerged after the overthrow of Cybertron's Elder Council, as one of the two major ideological factions that split Cybertronian civilization. While the original Decepticons were formed by warmongers, colonists, and conspirators seeking expansion and power, the Autobots advocated reflection, restraint, peace, and an end to Cybertron's resource exploitation 89.
The Autobots and Decepticons fought through two Cybertronian Civil Wars. During the first war, the Autobots eventually forced Megatron and the Decepticon Corps into a ceasefire after deploying the Ark, a spacecraft created through Wheeljack's research and Autobot engineering work 427 700. During the second war, the Decepticons gained the advantage through overwhelming air power, the warship Nemesis, Replica Soldiers, and combiners such as Devastator 579 583 700.
After the fall of Iacon, the Autobots' capital and final fortress, Optimus Prime led many survivors to one of Cybertron's moons, where they rebuilt Autobot City and continued resisting the Decepticons. Some Autobot remnants stayed behind on Cybertron to wage guerrilla warfare 653 710.
On Earth, the Autobots initially cooperated with the United States Government and NEST against the Decepticons, but the alliance became strained by U.S. demands, technology greed, restrictions on Autobot movement, and later open hostility 405 477 560 971. Optimus Prime eventually began establishing an Autobot homeland on Earth, culminating in New Iacon City in Africa 654 710.
Ideology and Culture
- The Autobots originated as the peace-oriented counterweight to the Decepticons' expansionist faction 89.
- Under Optimus Prime, they show greater willingness than the Decepticons to protect humans and avoid unnecessary casualties 553 640 844 971.
- They preserve rituals around life and death; Bumblebee's revival is conducted through a solemn awakening ritual, contrasting with the Decepticons' harsher methods 789.
- Their internal politics are not idealized: greed, seniority disputes, noble influence, and old grudges persist within the faction 405 556 842.
- During Sentinel Prime's rule, their treatment of Decepticon prisoners could be bloody and merciless; Optimus Prime later became more willing to redeem captured Decepticons 405 603.
Organization
| Role / Group | Notes |
|---|---|
| Optimus Prime | Current Autobot leader; former student of Sentinel Prime; led survivors after Iacon's fall 405 653. |
| Sentinel Prime | Former Autobot leader and Optimus Prime's teacher; later revealed to have secretly cooperated with Megatron 662 750 755. |
| Autobot Council | Influential political body containing old nobles; its pressure and resource control complicate Optimus Prime's leadership 556 842. |
| Aerialbots | Five-member aerial squad: Silverbolt, Air Raid, Fireflight, Skydive, and Slingshot; can combine into Defensor 734 746. |
| Autobot intelligence forces | Include Bumblebee and Prowl; the veteran Infiltrator is described as a feared hidden head of Autobot intelligence 405 431. |
| Cassette team / Blaster's team | Used for intelligence and rescue operations, including tracking Bumblebee's remains at Raytheon 640 641. |
Abilities & Skills
Transformation
Cybertronians can scan vehicles or machinery and transform into alternate forms, reproducing or surpassing the target's capabilities. Most Autobots, being ordinary Cybertronians without Decepticon-style combat modification, usually transform into ordinary vehicles rather than weapons platforms 393 776 807.
- Most Cybertronians can only maintain one alternate form in their lifetime 807.
- Changing forms requires discarding the previous transformation form and is difficult enough to demand strong resolve 807.
- Mechanical lifeforms generally cannot scan carbon-based lifeforms such as humans as transformation references 397.
Combat Capability
Autobots possess bodies made from advanced alloys, dense picometer-scale components, and self-repairing metal structures, making them far beyond human soldiers in individual combat 37 640 971.
- Elite Autobots such as Ironhide, Sideswipe, Drift, and Optimus Prime can threaten or defeat elite Decepticons 192 815.
- Ordinary Autobot civilians are much weaker and may struggle against Decepticon Replica Soldiers despite some combat training 777 815.
- Many Autobots favor close-quarters combat due to Cybertron's resource exhaustion and the high energy cost of sustained firepower 554 671.
- Cybertronians are vulnerable to sufficiently powerful electromagnetic interference, a weakness exploited by both Autobot and Decepticon military technology 363 375.
Science and Engineering
The Autobots possess high-level Cybertronian science but suffer from resource shortages after losing Cybertron 330 653.
- Wheeljack is described as one of the Autobots' foremost scientists and the designer of the Ark 427 653.
- Autobot scientists developed electric-arc awakening methods that imitate AllSpark life energy and can revive fallen Autobots in new bodies 789.
- Autobot laboratories once produced System Alloy before the civil war exhausted Cybertron's resources 330.
- The Autobots developed tactics against Devastator after suffering heavy losses to him during the Civil War 583.
Revival and Body Replacement
Autobots can revive fallen comrades or restore severely injured members by replacing bodies and reigniting their AllSpark, though the process is risky and can alter personality 331 641 789 790.
- Optimus Prime uses the Matrix of Leadership to revive fallen Autobots, including Bumblebee and Bullet 641.
- Ratchet and Wheeljack oversee Bumblebee's later awakening into a new body 789.
- Reawakened Autobots may retain memories but develop a drastically different personality, as Bumblebee does after becoming Goldbug 790.
Combiner Technology
The Autobots developed combiner warriors after Devastator inflicted major battlefield losses during the Cybertronian Civil War 583.
- The Aerialbots can combine into Defensor, a second-generation giant combiner stronger than Devastator 734 743 746.
- Combining has a time limit and can leave the component warriors combat-incapable afterward 745.
- Optimus Prime authorizes Defensor's deployment during the Moon battle to break the Decepticon encirclement 745 746.
