Background & History
Sentinel Prime was the patriarch of the Primus Royal Family and a direct descendant of Prima, one of the Thirteen Primes. As King of Primus, he initially possessed nominal authority while Cybertron's great nobles increasingly ignored royal decrees and empowered the Elder Council. The Council exploited his youth, stripped the royal family of the AllSpark and Prime relics, and reduced him to a controlled figurehead. 431 697
The experience shaped Sentinel into a distrustful and calculating ruler. He secretly built a loyal network in the military and other armed institutions, then cooperated with the gladiator Megatron to undermine the Elder Council. He elevated Megatron into a popular hero and supreme military commander, only for Megatron to later turn the military and former nobles against him, creating the Decepticons and igniting the Cybertronian Civil War. 697 908 913
After the war began, Sentinel established the Autobots and sheltered much of Cybertron's civilian population. His command repeatedly held the materially superior Decepticon Corps to a deadlock, but his authoritarian rule produced deep divisions: dissenters were imprisoned, exiled, executed, or driven into Decepticon ranks. 604 700 755
More than a century before his return, Sentinel stepped down as Autobot leader and installed his student, Optimus Prime, as successor. He later vanished during a supply-transport mission; his fate remained unknown until Autobots recovered his stasis-bound body from a crashed ship on the Moon. 653 749
Personality
Sentinel carried himself as an emperor rather than a conventional leader. Noble upbringing, political humiliation under the Elder Council, and millions of years of war made him proud, domineering, cold, and intensely distrustful of others. 628 697 755
His methods were brutally pragmatic. He treated even Autobots as expendable pieces in pursuit of royal authority and Cybertron's restoration, earning both fanatical loyalty and condemnation as a dictator. 697 749 755
He despised Decepticons and regretted empowering Megatron, yet was willing to cooperate with Megatron when it advanced his own objectives. His eventual willingness to sacrifice Earth and bargain with the Quintessons revealed the extremity of his ambition and desperation. 702 811 925

Story Role / Major Arcs
Rescue and Recovery
Autobots found Sentinel in a crashed spacecraft on the Moon and brought him to New Iacon City. He was critically damaged and afflicted with Cosmic Rust; Ratchet contained the disease and repaired his body while Optimus delayed using the depleted Matrix of Leadership due to suspicions surrounding the rescue. 749 752
Pressure from Sentinel’s supporters and evidence of unrest in New Iacon City forced Optimus to awaken him with the Matrix after more than three months in stasis. 796 797 798
Return to Autobot Politics
Though he initially appeared to support Optimus, Sentinel opposed Optimus’ limited alliance with Frenzy and worked to restore his own influence. His followers gathered on Earth, protested Optimus’ leadership, and helped him consolidate authority over the Autobots and New Iacon City. 811 833 885 900
Sentinel ordered preparations for war against African human nations and treated Decepticons, humans, and dissenting Autobots alike as obstacles to Autobot interests. 892 900
Betrayal and Fall
Sentinel openly broke with Optimus outside New Iacon City, revealing his agreement with Megatron and using the Cosmic Rust Gun to critically wound his former student. He then withdrew to Cairo with his loyalists. 910
In Cairo, Sentinel sought to use Cybertronian technology and Earth’s resources to save Cybertron, regardless of the destruction of human civilization. Optimus rejected the plan, and their conflict escalated into a leader-class duel. 923
Sentinel opened a portal for the Quintessons in return for their promised assistance. When the Quintesson Queen failed to honor the agreement, Optimus gave Sentinel one final chance to stop the invasion; Sentinel refused. Optimus then killed him by driving a greatsword through his AllSpark. 925
Aftermath
Sun Cheng recovered Sentinel’s body data and memory chip, obtaining detailed information on his body, AllSpark structure, dealings with Megatron and Quintessa, and Space Bridge technology. 931 934
