Background / History

The Mystic Sect was established during the transition from the innate era to the acquired era. Its founders accepted True One Realm deities as registered disciples but reserved genuine inner-disciple status for those who could survive the Ninefold Heaven Gate trial of the Jade Clarity Dao Palace 330.

Its early teachings expanded through distinct Dao lineages. Jade Clarity Daoist accepted Yang Huai's incarnation Taiwei as his first direct disciple, while Supreme Clarity Daoist accepted seven inner-chamber disciples and more than a hundred outer disciples after their trials 337. Taiwei later held mutual-aid gatherings for disciples of the Jade Clarity and Highest Purity Palaces, teaching the Primordial Nine Forms and encouraging the expansion of the Jade Clarity lineage 342.

As its disciples multiplied, the sect faced growing pressure on Kunlun Mountain's space and resources. Supreme Clarity Daoist chose to leave Kunlun with his disciples, after which Great Clarity and Jade Clarity Daoists also established separate foundations 385. Despite this dispersal, Taiwei's later reforms and cultivation of successive generations helped preserve cohesion between the sect's teachings 531.

The Mystic Sect rose amid the God-Mystic Conflict, competing with ancient god races for resources, authority, and living space. Its strength rested particularly on the All-Heaven Star Sea and its alliance with the Human Emperor Palace 386. When Yang Huai temporarily assumed the Heavenly Emperor's position, he elevated the sect's three leaders as the Three Purities Heavenly Venerables, ranked above the Four Imperials 393.

By the later era, the sect had entrenched itself across the Three Realms through its Dao Court, divine offices, and judicial institutions. The Mystic Sect Dao Court became the effective governing authority of the Wild Wasteland, exerting influence even over the Celestial Court 548.

Membership and Admission

The Heaven-Ascending Stairway's first forty-nine steps impose Five Elements restrictions, while its final fifty steps test the candidate's heart through illusion formations 359.

• The Mystic Sect presents itself as a lineage suited to the acquired age, when the blessings of the innate era have diminished and acquired destiny flourishes 386 520.
• Its qi-refiner cultivation lineage is described as possessing a natural advantage as the innate era gives way to the acquired era 337.
• The sect provides different paths according to aptitude:
  • Exceptional disciples may seek immortal-sage fruition.
  • Disciples of middling aptitude may become Divine Venerables, guard star positions, and continue cultivating through their offices.
  • Those of lesser aptitude may accumulate merit in the All-Heaven Star Sea for another opportunity to pursue the Great Dao 368.
• The All-Heaven Star Sea supports divine offices and grants disciples access to the authorities developed within it; these offices became a major source of advancement for later generations 369 447.
• Chaotic Cave Sacred Land serves as a cultivation site within the All-Heaven Star Sea. Entry is restricted to those with major service, exceptional talent, or recommendations from at least three Dao Court elders 524.
• The sect uses the Thousand-Illusion Reincarnation Formation to temper disciples; Supreme Clarity Daoist employed it on more than two hundred disciples, producing noticeably stricter discipline and diligence 350.

• Jade Clarity Daoist — Founder and one of the Three Pure Ones; master of Taiwei and head of the Jade Clarity Dao lineage 330 337.

• Suppression of ancient Divine Venerables — Supreme Clarity Daoist descended into the mortal world and killed Earth Spirit, Heaven Spirit, Water Spirit, Wuwang, and several evil-race progenitors who had oppressed the gods 357.
• God-Mystic Conflict — The sect's expansion brought it into direct conflict with ancient god races unwilling to surrender control over Heaven-and-Earth energies and resources 386.
• Celestial Court influence — Through Yang Huai's tenure as Heavenly Emperor, the Mystic Sect placed the Three Purities above the Four Imperials and gained the support of a substantial bloc of gods and qi refiners 393.
• Other Shore expansion — The Mystic Sect's Venerables confronted rival ancient gods while opening the Thirty-Three Heavens; the Three Pure Ones subsequently created the Yu Yu Heaven, Qingwei Heaven, and Dachi Heaven 480 484.
• Heavenly Dao struggle — The Three Pure Ones merged their powers through the Pangu Giant God to oppose Heavenly Emperor Cangli and secure the Mystic Sect's position within the Heavenly Dao Space 549.
• Postwar supremacy — After the Heavenly Emperor crisis, the Mystic Sect held temporary absolute supremacy across Heaven and Earth, though it still had to account for the interests of allied immortals and gods 557.
