Background

Huai Jin is a native of Northern Province whose cultivation family once produced a Void Insight Realm ancestor. The family's fortunes declined afterward, leaving him without the backing enjoyed by the great clans within the Myriad Clouds Sect. He traveled widely in part to temper his state of mind, but also because he was dissatisfied with the sect's treatment of Northern Province and could not find a way to change it from within. 782

He became an elder of the Myriad Clouds Sect's direct-line faction, but was later marginalized during Sect Master Yun Xingyu's internal purges. Though stripped of practical authority, he continued seeking resources and stability for the sect, including Spirit Grain and profits gained through campaigns in Yu Prefecture. 725 757

Huai Jin's early cooperation with Ye Xiu began as a pragmatic alliance over Spirit Grain, railway routes, and the suppression of smaller sect forces. Their interests aligned: the Heyang City Alliance gained control of crucial routes, while Huai Jin's coalition of major sects seized resources from their opponents. 725

Appearance

Huai Jin originally maintained the appearance of a dignified man in his fifties or sixties to reinforce his authority after his family's decline. Following the Dragon Slayer campaign, the heavenly reward and dragon power restore him to the appearance of a handsome young man. 781

  • Tall, straight-backed build with red lips and fair complexion. 781
  • Twin dragon horns growing from his head. 781 806
  • Golden, vertical-slit dragon eyes. 781 784
  • A green crystalline shard set in the center of his brow. 781
  • Dragon scales visible on his face and hands. 784 806
  • Wind and clouds visibly stir around him when he uses his power. 781 806

Personality

Huai Jin is ambitious, politically perceptive, and highly conscious of power. He is willing to use intimidation, manipulation, and carefully cultivated public righteousness to improve his position, particularly when dealing with sects that have exploited or sidelined him. 663 678 785

Despite this ruthlessness, he has genuine concern for Northern Province and for cultivators under his protection. He resents sect elders who seize resources for themselves while ordinary disciples suffer, personally treats injured junior cultivators, and provides Longyun's workers with generous wages and spiritual provisions. 725 789 807

His friendship with Ye Xiu tempers some of his impulsiveness. Huai Jin respects Ye Xiu's greater knowledge and strategic insight, though he does not always agree with Ye Xiu's methods and remains willing to intervene when he believes others are in danger. 770 776 781

Abilities & Skills

Wind and Cloud Authority

After absorbing power connected to the Azure Dragon and receiving the reward for the Dragon Soul's death, Huai Jin gains a profound affinity with wind and clouds. 781 784

  • Uses wind-and-cloud techniques to disperse dangerous attacks and protect allies during the Dragon Soul battle. 780

Divine Sense and Spellcraft

Huai Jin is an experienced high-realm cultivator with strong divine sense and a broad command of sect techniques.

  • Creates sound-isolating barriers capable of blocking the Foundation Establishment and Golden Core cultivators around him. 659
  • Uses support spells in large-scale battles when his primary wind-and-cloud arts are unsuitable. 780

  • Identified the demon's dragon-bloodline sealing power and prescribed blood- and vitality-replenishing spiritual medicines. 789
  • Healed Qiu Yu after severely beating him, combining mercy with deliberate intimidation. 668

Leadership, Negotiation, and Political Maneuvering

Huai Jin is adept at converting prestige, resources, and public sentiment into influence.

  • Recognized the Heyang City Alliance's potential and sought to place sect disciples within it rather than oppose it outright. 661

New Wind-and-Cloud Cultivation Method

  • Demonstrates the method in Longyun's cultivation district, where many ordinary cultivators find it unusually comprehensible. 807

Story Role / Major Arcs

Spirit Grain Investigation

Representing several major sects, Huai Jin approaches Ye Xiu over the distribution of Spirit Grain. Initially intending to pressure the Alliance, he recognizes Ye Xiu's strength and shifts to negotiation. During the ensuing theft investigation, he becomes increasingly convinced that the Alliance must be treated as a force worth cooperating with—and infiltrating. 655 661

At Northern Cosmos Station, Huai Jin displays his volatility and authority by killing an obstructive station cultivator and threatening further violence if no responsible official appears. He later capitalizes on the investigation to increase the sect coalition's prestige and secure resources. 663 669 678

Myriad Clouds Sect Conflict

After returning to the Myriad Clouds Sect, Huai Jin discovers that its elders have appropriated resources he secured for the sect's disciples. Frustrated by corruption and political infighting, he seeks Ye Xiu's help in making the sect face the consequences of losing his support. 725 726

When Yun Xingyu's actions threaten the sect and Northern Province, Huai Jin publicly confronts him. He denounces Yun's exploitation of subordinate sects and declares that he would rather become a lone cultivator than remain associated with such leadership. 757

Huai Jin deliberately enters Yun Xingyu's lightning tribulation. After the strike kills him, a manifestation of his ancestor emerges from the Myriad Clouds Sect's secret treasure and merges with him, allowing him to turn the battle's outcome and gain enormous public prestige. 759 760

Dragon Slayer Campaign

Huai Jin offers Ye Xiu an opportunity connected to an ancient dragon sealed beneath the Qilian Mountain Range. He shares his inherited knowledge of Earth-Vein Mountain Gods, ancient races, and the dragon's authority over eleven mountains and their waters. 768 769 770

Though he originally seeks the opportunity to overcome his own bottleneck, Huai Jin underestimates the Azure Dragon Soul's power. Its authority over wind and clouds renders most of his natal techniques ineffective, forcing him into a supporting role during the battle. 777 780

After Ye Xiu kills the Dragon Soul, Huai Jin spends three days comprehending the heavenly reward. He reaches the peak of the Purple Palace Realm, manifests dragon-like traits, and gains greater wind-and-cloud authority, though he falls short of Spirit Transformation. 781

Founding Longyun City

After leaving the Myriad Clouds Sect, Huai Jin chooses the junction of two regions for his new mountain gate. He wants the site to connect Northern Province with neighboring territory and create mutual prosperity rather than merely serve as a toll point. 782

With Ye Xiu's support, he rebuilds the dragon-damaged land, establishes Longyun City, attracts labor and cultivators through the Azure Dragon Pill, and turns the dragon legacy into a source of influence and development. 783 795 800

As Longyun grows, Huai Jin evolves from a renowned independent figure into a true sect leader. He accepts tens of thousands of disciples, funds the city through a major Central Bank loan, and begins building a stable master-disciple inheritance around his new cultivation method. 808

Notable Quotes

“If remaining in the sect means continuing to keep company with a villain like you, then I, Huai Jin, would rather become a lone cultivator of the mountains and wilds from this day onward!” 757

“I merely picked up the scraps of others' wisdom. There have never been shortcuts on the path of cultivation. In the end, one must still find a way to repay it.” 761

Trivia

  • Huai Jin once deliberately preserved an elderly appearance because he believed it made others take the declining branch of his family more seriously. 781
  • Ye Xiu describes Huai Jin's Northern Province fame as equivalent to that of a “star.” 791
  • Huai Jin's attempt to rally Longyun's common cultivators with grand ideals initially fails; Ye Xiu proves more effective by appealing to their practical hopes through the Azure Dragon Pill. 800
