Background / History
Early Career and Disciples
Orochimaru was raised and personally taught by Hiruzen Sarutobi. His military achievements during the Second Shinobi World War established him among Konoha’s upper ranks, and he became a strong contender for Fourth Hokage 34 35.
Before Yin Jie, Orochimaru had taught Nawaki, who died after entering an explosive-tag trap during the war. By the time of Yin Jie’s first Hashirama-cell fusion, Yin Jie is his only living disciple 63.
Taking Yin Jie as a Disciple
At Danzō’s request, Orochimaru initially volunteered to become Yin Jie’s jonin instructor without intending to accept him as a personal disciple. Tsunade’s praise changed his assessment: she had wanted to teach Yin Jie herself before developing hemophobia, and Orochimaru respected both her judgment and their friendship 34.
Orochimaru and Tsunade visited the Uchiha compound after Yin Jie’s graduation. Yin Jie accepted his offer, valuing his scientific expertise and the political opportunities attached to his position. Although the arrangement appeared to place Yin Jie within the Hokage faction, Orochimaru directed him toward Root 34 35 36.
After testing Yin Jie in a forest clearing, Orochimaru designed a training plan emphasizing genjutsu and gave him the scroll for his distinctive substitution technique. He later helped Yin Jie join Root without receiving Danzō’s controlling curse seal 37 38 40.
Hashirama-Cell Experiments
Orochimaru continued researching Hashirama-cell transplantation with Danzō’s support after Hiruzen halted the project because of its fatalities. The infant experiment had one survivor among sixty subjects: Tenzo, who acquired Wood Release. Unlike the original storyline described by Yin Jie, Orochimaru eventually discovered this survivor and secretly retained him rather than informing Danzō 49 50 56 57.
Unable to improve Tenzo’s incomplete fusion, Orochimaru sought material from the Kaguya Clan because of its renowned physical toughness. After an attempted live capture went wrong, he assigned Yin Jie to retrieve a sealed Kaguya jonin corpse from the Land of Water. Studying the corpse produced a breakthrough that allowed him to prepare weakened Hashirama Cells for Yin Jie 56 57 62.
The fusion lasted seven days and increased Yin Jie’s physical strength, chakra reserves, and recovery speed while advancing his Sharingan to three tomoe. It did not grant Wood Release at that stage. The prolonged experiment prompted Hiruzen to arrive with ANBU, fearing for Yin Jie’s safety; a subsequent private conversation with Orochimaru led to the withdrawal of the ANBU watching him 63 64 65 66.
Building an Independent Root Faction
Orochimaru formally became Root’s second-in-command beneath Danzō. Their agreement prevented Danzō from bypassing him to issue orders directly to Yin Jie 52.
After nearly falling out with Hiruzen, Orochimaru concluded that he could no longer become Fourth Hokage. He instead supported Yin Jie’s ambitions, believing that a leader who understood him would provide a better research environment. He assembled the Moonshade Squad around Yin Jie, recruiting Aburame Shikuroo, Inuzuka Tsume, and Kurama Daizō 87.
Danzō repeatedly undermined this faction. One leaked mission targeted three squads representing roughly two-thirds of Orochimaru’s Root forces. Later, Orochimaru warned Yin Jie of another intelligence leak and submitted a written report to Hiruzen. He also used Root resources to establish a private base in the southern Land of Rain 67 108 118 119.
Danzō’s selective funding and willingness to sacrifice Orochimaru’s subordinates eventually made their partnership intolerable. Financial support from Yin Jie and the Uchiha Clan had already become essential to several experiments 163.
White Zetsu Research and the Move Against Danzō
Yin Jie captured the special White Zetsu Tobi and sent him to Orochimaru as a research specimen. Fascinated by Tobi’s unusually complete fusion with Hashirama Cells, Orochimaru sent a Shadow Clone back to his laboratory through reverse summoning 156 162.
Orochimaru and Yin Jie then planned their confrontation with Danzō. The clone handled surveillance and barrier arrangements while Yin Jie approached Danzō directly. After Danzō was placed under Yin Jie’s control, Orochimaru’s familiarity with Root made it possible to take over its affairs while leaving Danzō as a figurehead. Orochimaru and Yin Jie are later described as Root’s effective rulers 163 164 170 260.
War and Peace Negotiations
Orochimaru commanded Konoha forces against Iwagakure in the Land of Grass and against Sunagakure on the Land of Rivers front. He encouraged Yin Jie to gain military achievements, recognizing battlefield merit as the foundation of advancement within Konoha 90 97 118.
Sunagakure’s later offensive, reinforced by the One-Tails jinchūriki Bunpuku, forced his army back toward Kikyo Mountain. Orochimaru requested reinforcements, and Hiruzen assigned Yin Jie to help him defeat Shukaku and end the Sand campaign. Before the counterattack, Orochimaru personally infiltrated the enemy camp to obtain intelligence from Yakushi Nonō 239 240 242 243.
At Kikyo Mountain, Orochimaru and Manda fought Rasa while Yin Jie confronted Shukaku. Orochimaru used a vast snake formation to drain Rasa’s chakra and later escaped Gold Dust Burial with Rashomon. Konoha’s victory left Rasa badly wounded and removed Sunagakure as an immediate threat 247 250 254 260.
Disillusioned with Hiruzen’s demand for immediate peace negotiations, Orochimaru delayed responding and positioned troops along the Land of Rivers border to threaten further invasion. He and Yin Jie represented Konoha in talks mediated by Yahiko’s Akatsuki, using an apparent walkout to challenge Chiyo’s demands 258 261 265.
After the ceasefire and alliance treaty, Orochimaru led the healthier surviving troops toward the Land of Grass. He also supplied Yin Jie with newly optimized Hashirama Cells developed through Tobi research, substantially strengthening his disciple’s Wood Release 267.
Appearance
- Eyes: Golden, vertically slit pupils, repeatedly described as snake-like 34 62 84.
- Complexion and build: Pale face and a slender figure 84 254.
- Eye markings: Purple eyeshadow extending downward toward his nostrils 34 62.
- Voice: Habitually hoarse or raspy 34 51 162.
- Mannerisms: Frequently extends his tongue to lick his lips; laughs with an unsettling, sinister chuckle 38 62 63 65.
Personality
Orochimaru seeks to master every ninjutsu and uncover the truths of the shinobi world. Research can consume his attention so completely that he remains behind laboratory barriers for days, emerging exhausted only to address essential documents or intelligence 49 51.
He is calculating in both politics and personal dealings. His partnership with Danzō is based on mutual exploitation, and he conceals valuable results such as Tenzo when disclosure would disadvantage him. His battlefield pressure and staged withdrawal from peace talks show the same willingness to manipulate an opponent’s expectations 57 261 265.
His attachment to Yin Jie is nevertheless genuine. Before experimenting on him, Orochimaru explicitly gives him an opportunity to refuse; the narration states that concern for his disciple temporarily outweighs his desire to investigate the unknown. He also objects to Danzō sending his followers to meaningless deaths 63 163.
Among old friends, Orochimaru shows a teasing side. He watches Yin Jie embarrass Jiraiya, contacts Tsunade so she can enjoy the spectacle, and interrupts just as Jiraiya begins gaining an advantage 83 84.
Abilities & Skills
Scientific Research and Hashirama Cells
- Cell processing: Weakens and dilutes Hashirama Cells sufficiently for Yin Jie’s initial fusion 62 63.
- Bloodline analysis: Theorizes that the Sharingan’s extreme spiritual power may interact with the extreme physical power represented by Hashirama Cells 63.
- Experimental adaptation: Uses a Kaguya jonin corpse to overcome a research bottleneck 62.
- White Zetsu analysis: Studies Tobi’s fusion with Hashirama Cells and produces a new formulation whose experimental effects exceed those of the original cells 162 267.
- Limits: His initial transplantation work is highly lethal, and he initially lacks knowledge of the Mangekyō and Eternal Mangekyō stages 50 64.
Orochimaru-Style Substitution Technique
- Emerges from the mouth of a damaged outer body, leaving the discarded husk behind 38.
- Demonstrates the technique after taking Yin Jie’s Dragon Fire attack 38.
- Uses a shed snake skin to escape Rasa’s gold-dust attack during an earlier confrontation 115.
- Gives Yin Jie its instructional scroll as a graduation gift 38.
Snake Ninjutsu and Summoning
- Python summoning: Summons a mottled python approximately twenty meters long during Yin Jie’s assessment 37.
- Manda: Fights from atop the giant snake and directs large-scale snake attacks through him 247 250.
- Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Uses the technique to move Tenzo back to his chair; later provides it and Many Hidden Shadow Snake Hands to Uzuki Yugao 63 260.
- Myriad Snake Formation: Releases a mass of snakes while escaping Rasa’s attack 115.
- Expanded formation: Summons at least ten thousand snakes from Ryūchi Cave at Kikyo Mountain, spending nearly half his available chakra 250.
- Messenger snakes: Uses small snakes to deliver intelligence, missions, and warnings to Yin Jie 57 80 108 162.
Defensive Ninjutsu and Evasion
- Earth-Style Wall: Blocks Yin Jie’s frontal shuriken and kunai barrage 37.
- Blind-spot evasion: Avoids redirected projectiles approaching from his sides and rear 37.
- Body Flicker: Rapidly closes the distance after Yin Jie’s assessment 38.
- Rashomon: Summons a massive defensive gate to withstand Gold Dust Burial and escape the buried position 254.
- Combat limit against Rasa: Their direct confrontation is described as evenly matched; Rasa’s range and hit-and-run tactics make a decisive victory difficult for Orochimaru 250.
Sealing, Barriers, and Shadow Clones
- Two Forms Seal: Develops an advanced form of Iruka’s One-Line Lamp Array 260.
- Laboratory barriers: Conceals and protects sensitive experiments behind additional barriers 49 63 64.
- Operational barriers: Coordinates surveillance and barrier personnel during the move against Danzō to isolate any disturbance 164.
- Shadow Clones: Uses clones for instruction, research, and covert protection during Yin Jie’s B-rank missions 41 49 162.
- Reverse summoning: Returns a research clone from the front to his laboratory with Tenzo’s assistance 162.
- Clone limitation: The clone used against Danzō has little chakra and is assigned support work rather than the main fight 162 164.
Teaching and Talent Development
- Tests concealed abilities before designing individualized training, rather than relying solely on academy reports 37.
- Identifies Yin Jie’s unusually strong spiritual energy and prioritizes practical genjutsu training 38.
- Improves Aburame Shikuroo’s control over his venomous nanoscale insects, though not to the point of effortless use 87.
- Selects specialized gifts for Yin Jie’s students: Leaf Style: Willow for Hayate, snake techniques for Yugao, and the Two Forms Seal with Jiraiya’s Fire Release insights for Iruka 260.
- Is not himself proficient in genjutsu and rarely uses it offensively, but can instruct Yin Jie at his early level 38.
Military Command and Diplomacy
- Commands Konoha armies, coordinates intelligence networks, and deploys reinforcements without abandoning the main front 90 118 126 242.
- Uses an attrition strategy against Rasa, aiming to exhaust him before Yin Jie finishes fighting Shukaku 250.
- Converts military victory into negotiating leverage through troop positioning and calculated threats to abandon talks 261 265.
