Background / History

Early Training

Kurenai is the daughter of Shinku Yuhi, the Intelligence Division chief and a genjutsu specialist. After watching Jin spar Minato, she asks Shinku to teach her ninjutsu because she wants to become as capable as the two shinobi. 19 20 Shinku's work frequently keeps him away from home, leading Jin to escort Kurenai to and from the Ninja Academy and agree to look after her when possible. 20 22

Wanting to learn beyond the Academy curriculum, Kurenai asks Jin to teach her basic genjutsu. He initially agrees despite still studying genjutsu himself, then begins giving her lessons at his home. 25 31 32 Her rapid completion of the theory impresses Jin, and she successfully casts Tree Binding Death during her first practical lesson. 34

Jin's Injuries and ANBU Work

Kurenai visits Jin while he is hospitalized after his poisoning, remaining at his bedside until he regains consciousness and bringing him water. 42 She later witnesses Jin's ANBU identity being exposed to her Academy peers. 36

During a training session with Obito and Rin, Kurenai is targeted by a Root Anbu's shuriken. Jin uses the Flying Thunder God mark he placed on her to reach her in time and protect the group. 50

Team Eight

Following her graduation, Kurenai joins Team Eight with Asuma Sarutobi and Might Guy under Dan Katō. 58 Their first lesson becomes a severe survival exercise when Jin's clone captures Kurenai and forces Asuma and Guy to attempt a rescue. Jin reinforces the ordeal with Sharingan genjutsu, leaving Kurenai shaken and furious with him. 59

On a mission against Kurama Kagami's team, Kurenai protects Nogoke despite being frightened and nearly receives a fatal strike from Kumoi Chizuru. Kurama Kagami intervenes, diverting the attack and pulling her away with a Water Whip because the Konoha shinobi are outside his mission's scope. 69
