Background

Founding and early history

Following the War of the Ancients, Dath'Remar Sunstrider led the exiled Highborne east from Mount Hyjal. The migrants renamed themselves the Quel'dorei and established Quel'Thalas in the northern forests of the Eastern Kingdoms. 49 242

Quel'Thalas was founded atop land revered by the trolls as an ancient holy city. The new elven settlers refused to abandon it and fought repeated troll assaults, with Dath'Remar personally leading the early wars. 49 242

To conceal their use of arcane magic and deter the troll armies, the High Elves built Sunwell-powered runestones around the kingdom. The resulting barrier hid Quel'Thalas behind its mountain borders and protected it for millennia. 242

The Sunstriders became the royal house through Dath'Remar's battlefield prestige, control of the first Spellbreakers, and the dynasty's ability to command the greatest share of Sunwell energy and state resources. 49 254

Relationship with humanity

The Sunstriders historically held less prejudice toward humans than many Highborne. Dath'Remar rejected calls to expel or exterminate the early human tribes encountered in Tirisfal Glades. 72

During the Troll Wars, Quel'Thalas sought human support and later taught magic to one hundred human apprentices. Dalaran's arcane tradition subsequently developed from this elven instruction. 72 243 248

Geography and landmarks

Quel'Thalas occupies the northern end of the Eastern Kingdoms. Natural mountain ranges and Sunwell-powered runestone barriers isolate the realm from the outside world. 76

The Silvermoon Council is Quel'Thalas's ruling body. It comprises seven leading High Elf noble lords, while the Sunstrider royal family acts as an arbiter and possesses veto authority that it seldom invokes. 74

The Sunstriders retain the kingdom's largest Sunwell-energy allocation and substantial control over resource distribution. Their long-standing marriage alliances created a network of royalist families that supports the dynasty. 47 254

Major internal interests include royalists, clan powers, ranger powers, trade interests, military factions, and priestly factions. Despite these divisions, the upper ranks are extensively intermarried. 61 135

Silvermoon City is divided into four districts. The eastern district contains the royal court, government departments, and Sunstrider Square, while the western district is controlled by the major clans and filled with private gardens, villas, and towers. 250

The Sunwell and mana addiction

The Sunwell is Quel'Thalas's principal source of magical power and prosperity. Its energy powers even ordinary civic labor, including enchanted brooms used for sweeping. 61

Constant exposure to the Sunwell grants High Elves exceptional arcane affinity; any Quel'dorei willing to pursue the art can potentially become a proper mage. 71

This dependence has a severe cost: every High Elf develops mana addiction to some degree. Symptoms generally remain dormant near the Sunwell but can become debilitating when elves travel far from Quel'Thalas. 61 245

• Bloodthistle — A Sunwell-irradiated plant from Eversong Woods that relieves mana-addiction symptoms during travel. Prolonged consumption worsens dependency, forcing many traveling elves to eventually return home. 61 245

Spellbreakers

Spellbreakers are Quel'Thalas's distinctive elite force, created by Dath'Remar Sunstrider. They disrupt, twist, and break hostile magical energy while combining swordsmanship with high-level arcane mastery. 49 52

A prospective Spellbreaker must be both an exceptional warrior or swordsman and a highly accomplished archmage. This rare dual discipline made the force a cornerstone of Sunstrider authority. 52 254

Sunwell energy crisis

An unexplained energy vortex formed over Silvermoon City and drained power from the Sunwell, magical constructs, and the High Elves themselves. The event caused kingdom-wide panic and prompted an emergency gathering of the Silvermoon Council. 74

Orendo later concluded that he and the arcane entity Aluneth were likely responsible for the disaster, as Aluneth possessed the capacity to consume immense quantities of magical energy. 75

Contact with Orendo Seferosa

Kael'thas initially chose not to involve himself with Orendo, his half-elven nephew, because Orendo was not fully elf. He later welcomed Orendo into the Sunstrider family and taught him about the Spellbreakers. 10 47 49 52

Orendo's work on safer Bloodthistle consumption earned him recognition from elven institutions and eventually the Silvermoon Medal, granting him free entry into Quel'Thalas. 60 77 245

Dalaran exchange and political reform

The Heaven-Piercing Tower's sudden arrival above Silvermoon City exposed Quel'Thalas's lack of preparedness and intensified the conflict between Kael'thas, Anasterian, and the Silvermoon Council. 242 243

In response, Anasterian forced the council to accept broad exchanges with Dalaran. Thirty-four human and gnome archmages remained in Quel'Thalas for a month-long academic exchange, while more than fifty elven mages departed with the Kirin Tor to experience the outside world. 244 248 259

Joining the Azeroth Alliance

Orendo offered the formula for Orendo's Gift in exchange for Quel'Thalas joining the Azeroth Alliance. When the Silvermoon Council attempted to delay the decision, he threatened to limit the potion's benefits to individual elves willing to cooperate with him. 247

Anasterian declared Quel'Thalas's accession after the council yielded. The kingdom later agreed to send 3,000 elves—including mages, soldiers, and support personnel—to assist the Alliance. 247 255

Quel'Thalas subsequently contributed 5,000 troops to the Alliance expeditionary force under the nominal leadership of Kael'thas and the operational command of Ranger-General Alleria Windrunner. 286
