Background / History
Aegwynn’s given name is Magna, while Aegwynn is her surname. Her name was chosen in honor of her mentor, Magna Scavell, who acted as both her teacher and family. Scavell selected her over five male apprentices despite widespread prejudice against female human mages. 92
Her prodigious ability distinguished her from an early age. She mastered advanced lost magic while still young, was chosen as Scavell’s successor, and became the first female human Guardian of the Tirisfal Council. Her appointment created lasting tension with human mages and the Council, though High Elf and gnome members supported Scavell’s decision. 4 92
As Guardian, Aegwynn operated largely alone. The Tirisfal Council’s attempts to restrain or hunt her through the Tiris Secret Society ended in humiliation; she defeated its strongest mages without killing them. Council members later concluded that no one on Azeroth could oppose her while she retained Guardian power. 41
Aegwynn bound the arcane elemental Aluneth into a staff and used its power to establish Karazhan at a weak point in Azeroth’s spatial fabric. During her battle with Sargeras’s avatar in Northrend, Aluneth refused to answer her command; Aegwynn discarded it, summoned Atiesh, and continued fighting. Sargeras ultimately hid his soul within her during the aftermath of that conflict. 75 91 194
Appearance
Aegwynn is portrayed as a strikingly beautiful human woman with fair skin, long blonde or golden hair, and a composed, aristocratic bearing. Her eyes are variously described as azure, blue, emerald, or green when arcane power is active. 3 101 192 201
- Often wears pale or dark blue mage robes. 192 201
- Uses arcane energy to float and move when physically exhausted. 102 193
- Her eyes can ignite with violet arcane flames when she scrutinizes magic or a person. 101
- Frequently travels on an ornate magic carpet. 3
Personality
Aegwynn is immensely proud, blunt, and quick-tempered. She initially dismisses most mages as inferior and openly regards Dalaran’s political affairs as tedious. Her confidence is rooted in unmatched talent, long experience, and her record as Azeroth’s foremost defender. 4 201
Despite her temper, she is highly disciplined and rational. She can shift from vulnerability or emotion to absolute clarity almost immediately, and she approaches magical problems with direct, practical judgment. Her dedication to destroying demons and protecting Azeroth defined her path to the ninth circle. 62 199
Sargeras’s hidden soul gradually darkened her disposition and encouraged her plan to raise a new generation of Guardians. However, Aegwynn resisted complete corruption through sheer will. Her relationship with Orendo eventually changed her from treating him as a potential tool and successor to trusting him more than anyone else. 194 315
