History

Founding

The Dragonflights and Tirisfal Guardians warned Dalaran that the Burning Legion was gathering for another invasion. In response, Orendo invoked Azeroth's authority and proposed an alliance open to every race willing to defend the world, regardless of origin. Members would contribute forces against the Legion in exchange for the Alliance's and Azeroth's protection 240.

Quel'Thalas became the first state to formally join after Orendo pressured King Anasterian and the Silvermoon Council to decide immediately 247. Stormwind and Kul Tiras subsequently entered, while Lordaeron, Stromgarde, Gilneas, and Alterac initially refused, prompting Dalaran-led sanctions on non-member states 261 267.

Orendo and Aegwynn arranged for the remaining human rulers and their elite troops to witness demons in controlled conditions. After an abyss lord defeated more than three hundred knights, the four reluctant kingdoms agreed to join 275 278.

The first Azeroth Alliance Conference formally established the Alliance in Dalaran. The Alliance Grand Charter was signed on May 11, 3051 of the Thoradin Calendar and took effect the following day 278 280.

Early expansion

The Alliance's first army, approximately 50,000 strong, campaigned in Elwynn Forest alongside Stormwind's forces. It defeated the gnoll tribes that had threatened the region for centuries; Orendo prevented their extermination and instead empowered selected gnoll leaders to civilize and govern the remaining tribes. Kobolds were incorporated through the same approach 280.

The Alliance then moved into the Hinterlands, established contact with the Wildhammer Dwarves, and pressured the forest trolls of Jintha'Alor into surrendering. The trolls traded with Alliance territory but were not immediately admitted as members due to widespread opposition among existing states 280 286 300.

Alliance expeditions later established Venture Bay in Grizzly Hills, Northrend, as a pioneer camp and base for the planned Northrend Temple 304 305.

Alliance Grand Charter

The Alliance Grand Charter is the Alliance's fundamental law. It defines its purpose, organizational structure, member rights and duties, international principles, and responsibility for world peace and security 278.

Military

Command structure

Alliance Military Headquarters directs the Alliance's combined forces through a Grand Marshal, ten marshals, a general staff department, and a combat department staffed by military elites from member states 278.

Although the Charter centralized military authority, the full integration of national armies remained an ongoing project. Orendo considered shared interests and gradual reform necessary before the member states would fully surrender independent military control 279.

• Yogg-Saron operation — Orendo led a 25-member elite raid of Titan Keepers, Naaru, and Guardians into Yogg-Saron's body to locate and destroy its heart 406 407.

Economy and Infrastructure

Alliance currency

Dalaran replaced its former gold coin with Alliance currency after the Alliance's founding. Alliance coin is issued in gold, silver, and copper denominations, with a 1:100 exchange rate between each level 278.

The former Dalaran Bank was renamed the Alliance Bank and expanded from Dalaran into allied capitals and major cities 303.

Trade and movement

The Alliance opened Dalaran's colonies—White City, Harbor City, and the planned Northrend Temple—to settlement and commerce by all member states. It also encouraged free movement of residents and merchants within Alliance territory 278.

The shared currency and expanded trade network contributed to Dalaran's transformation into an international metropolis inhabited by humans, elves, gnomes, dwarves, trolls, tauren, gnolls, and other peoples 303 350.

Internal Policy

The Alliance is formally founded on equality, but its cohesion depends heavily on Orendo's authority, benefits, and military strength 365 371.

Orendo has repeatedly advocated the integration of intelligent races traditionally regarded as enemies, including gnolls, kobolds, trolls, and quilboars. These policies have often faced resistance from human, dwarven, and elven members, particularly where old wars and territorial conflicts are involved 280 286 371.

During the Void Tide's assault on Venture Bay, Alliance soldiers of multiple races rallied under the shared battle cry:
