Background / History

Dalaran is described as the shared home of mages, although mages also come from other centers such as Quel'Thalas. Its interests are treated as a collective red line: a mage who sacrifices them for personal gain becomes an enemy of other mages 3.

Mage apprenticeship in the city is demanding and hazardous. Apprentices face strict academic deadlines, work as assistants handling dangerous magical materials, investigate magical incidents, and may be exploited as research subjects by abusive teachers 1.

Lister arrives by airship at Dalaran, finding a prosperous floating city built above a vast lake and surrounded by constant commercial traffic 9. His emergence as an archmage and Ebony Chill's recognition of him later alarm the city and prompt the Kirin Tor to place him under Antonidas's protection and instruction 12 13.

Dalaran is a constantly changing magical city whose architecture and services draw on several cultures and disciplines.

Council of Kirin Tor

The Council of Kirin Tor regulates magical authority within Dalaran. It insists that spell danger ratings and circle classifications remain under Dalaran's control rather than private organizations 22.

• Published spells may not exceed the third circle under the council's agreement with the Dalaran Truth Daily 22.
• The council assigns reviewers to oversee spell qualifications 22.
• Antonidas leads Dalaran's response to major magical threats and acts as the city's strongest political and magical protector 13 20.

Guardian Politics

Dalaran regards Medivh as an uncontrollable danger because he lacks ties to the city and operates independently of its institutions 13. Antonidas takes Lister as his disciple partly to protect him from Medivh and develop a potential counterweight should the Guardian lose control 13.

Medivh rejects Kirin Tor involvement in the Council of Tirisfal's succession decisions, creating tension between Dalaran's leaders and the current Guardian 20.

Dalaran Truth Daily

Lister proposes the Dalaran Truth Daily to serve residents whose needs are ignored by official mage-focused notices. Its planned coverage includes spells, alchemy, potions, local events, food, biographies, and literature 17.
