Background / History

Ma Hongjun was originally a Shrek Academy student and a companion of Dai Mubai. Born in an ordinary mountain village where commoners usually awakened weak “grass chicken” martial souls, he alone developed a mutation; a teacher subsequently brought him to Shrek Academy. The academy's resources and soul rings allowed his martial soul to develop toward a phoenix form 388.

His incomplete Evil Fire Phoenix mutation caused recurring, painful loss of control. At first, he used visits to illicit alleys to relieve the condition and hid this behavior out of concern that Bai Chenxiang and other academy girls would reject him 169. After accidentally inhaling an aphrodisiac intended for Zhang Xiaohe, his evil fire erupted; he lost control and killed a young girl before fleeing back to the academy in panic 178.

Rather than seek a lasting solution, Ma Hongjun increasingly exploited intimacy with female Soul Masters to suppress his evil fire and accelerate cultivation. His victims were often drained of Soul Power, with at least one woman left withered and dead; this method also made his evil fire stronger 234 235. By the time he returned to Shrek Academy as a Soul King, his body had changed dramatically, and he concealed the source of his rapid progress from Flender 244 245.

After losing control and severely damaging Bai Chenxiang's cultivation foundation, he alienated the Four Single-Attribute Clans. Two Fallen Soul Masters later abducted him from Shrek Academy 270. He subsequently embraced Fallen Soul Master methods, rose to Soul Emperor, and persuaded Dai Mubai to accept the “power of ultimate evil” as a shortcut to strength 275.

Ma Hongjun's path culminated in the evolution of his Evil Fire Phoenix into the Dark Phoenix after he absorbed a soul bone seized from Tie Wu. He became the sect master of the Fallen Soul Master organization known as the Holy Word Sect, reached Title Douluo, and pursued further strength through slaughter and refinement of living Soul Masters 344 367 381.

During a confrontation with Qian Jun Douluo, Ma Hongjun activated his domain and lost control of his ultimate dark flames. Chrysanthemum Douluo and Gui Mei Douluo restrained him with their Martial Soul Fusion Skill, allowing an angel squad's Sacred Greatsword to kill him 382 383. He later reappeared in a body that was not his own, compelled by Bibi Dong through an overwhelming internal force 387.

Appearance

Ma Hongjun was initially plump and sleazy-looking, with small eyes and an appearance that drew ridicule 169 177. His rapid cultivation later transformed him into a burly, powerful, more handsome man, though a trace of wickedness and violence remained between his brows 244.

Ma Hongjun is prideful, impulsive, and deeply self-serving. While he initially recognizes the pain and danger caused by his evil fire, he repeatedly rationalizes his actions as something forced upon him by his martial soul 169 178. Once he discovers that harming other Soul Masters also accelerates his cultivation, remorse gives way to satisfaction and cruelty 235.

His extreme desire for power makes him susceptible to—and eventually an advocate of—Fallen Soul Master cultivation. He manipulates Dai Mubai's insecurity by emphasizing the widening gap between their strength, presenting evil methods as the only viable shortcut 275. As sect master, he becomes intolerant of defiance and is feared even by fellow Fallen Soul Masters 307.

Despite this descent, traces of his former attachments remain. Flender's voice causes memories of his origins and academy life to resurface, and the madness in his eyes begins to fade when confronted by the Vast Sea Cosmic Shroud 388 390.
