Background / History
Naruto grew up alone in Konoha as the Nine-Tails’ jinchūriki and the son of the Fourth Hokage. At five years old, he was thin, poorly clothed, frequently hungry, and routinely ostracized by villagers and other children who called him a monster. 20 21
Unable to cook, clean, or manage his household, Naruto lived in a messy central-district home despite having appliances and basic necessities. His jinchūriki constitution kept him alive through neglect, hunger, and untreated injuries. 23 25
The Uchiha Police Force’s intervention marked a major change in his circumstances. Zhengye gave him food, punished people who harmed him, and placed him under Police Force protection; Naruto began to see Zhengye as a dependable protector. 22 29 42 Following a later attack that caused the Nine-Tails’ chakra to leak, Konoha publicly clarified that Naruto was a human vessel containing the beast rather than the beast itself. 37 41 42
Kakashi subsequently began caring for Naruto’s food, clothing, hygiene, and daily life. With protection and support, Naruto made friends, learned basic household tasks, and eventually entered the Ninja Academy alongside the heirs of Konoha’s major clans. 57 78 84 85
Naruto’s life remains markedly safer after the Police Force begins openly protecting him; he later reflects that he has not been beaten since Zhengye entered his life. At the Academy, he forms a close bond with Gaara, who encourages Naruto’s growth despite his continuing academic and physical struggles. 129
When Zhengye returns to Konoha with Haku, Kimimaro, and Karin, Naruto immediately tries to welcome Karin as a friend. 130 131
Appearance
Naruto is a blond-haired child who was initially sallow, thin, and visibly neglected. 20
- Often appeared in dirty, unwashed clothing during his early childhood. 20
- Frequently bore bruises, cuts, and other injuries from bullying. 20 28 29
- Became noticeably cleaner and healthier after Kakashi began looking after him. 57 102
Personality
Naruto is resilient and open-hearted despite prolonged isolation. He repeatedly endures abuse without losing his desire to be accepted, asking other children to play with him even after being rejected and attacked. 20 21
Food, companionship, and small acts of kindness mean an exceptional amount to him because he spent much of his childhood hungry and alone. He treasures Zhengye’s gifts, Sasuke’s dango, Kakashi’s care, and the friendships he forms with other children. 21 29 33 78
He is impulsive but fiercely loyal to his friends. When ANBU capture Yota, Naruto immediately tries to intervene and later helps organize Yota’s rescue. 79 80
Naruto gradually becomes brighter and more confident as his circumstances improve. He proactively reaches out to Karin upon meeting her and remains determined to improve even when he feels overshadowed by Sasuke’s abilities at the Academy. 129 130 131
