Background / History
Gaara was raised in Sunagakure as the vessel of Shukaku. His seal was severely compromised, allowing Shukaku's chakra and will to leak into him constantly; this deprived Gaara of sleep and repeatedly endangered his control over his own body 89 97. His father, Fourth Kazekage Rasa, treated him as a measure of military value and arranged repeated assassination attempts against him 87 91.
Yashamaru provided Gaara with an early educational foundation, including literacy, but later attempted to assassinate him on Rasa's orders. The character for “love” on Gaara's forehead appeared after that attempt and Yashamaru's death 88 129. Before leaving Sunagakure, Gaara had only played with Kankuro and Temari, while other children feared him 104. His childhood also included numerous killings, which were later identified as part of the traumatic past from which he recovered in Konoha 254.
When Zhengye found him near children playing in Sunagakure, Gaara's desire not to be abandoned turned violent after the children fled from him in fear. He used sand to drag them back and nearly crushed them before Zhengye intervened 88.
The encounter was partly engineered by Zhengye, who used his Sharingan to increase the soccer ball's gravity and make it land beside Gaara. After freeing the children and knocking Gaara unconscious, Zhengye entered his mental world and injected ocular power into the gaps in Shukaku's seal 88. Zhengye subsequently recognized that this power could both plug the gaps and pry them wider; Orochimaru later identified damage indicating that ocular power had strained the seal nearly to breaking point 89 104.
During a later Shukaku rampage, Zhengye entered Shukaku's sand body, located Gaara, and used the Sealing Scroll: Boundless Exile to remove him safely. Zhengye then falsely reported Gaara's death to Rasa, allowing him to leave the village without immediate pursuit 92. After Gaara was released from the scroll, Zhengye subdued Shukaku again and took Gaara toward Konoha 93 95.
Gaara slept continuously for three days while Zhengye camped in the desert, making up for his prolonged sleep deprivation. During that period, Shukaku repeatedly attempted to possess him, and Zhengye entered his inner world five times to force the One-Tail into submission 94. Shukaku also warned that Sunagakure possessed a Tea Bowl containing his chakra that could be used to track him 94 95. Meanwhile, Sunagakure's failure to find Gaara's remains reinforced its belief that he had died by turning into sand, and Rasa ordered the Sealing Team to monitor the Tea Bowl for Shukaku's supposed future resurrection 96.
In the Uchiha Clan Compound, Gaara found himself accepted rather than feared. He learned from Shukaku that Rasa had caused much of his suffering and decided never to return to Sunagakure 104. Zhengye subsequently enrolled him in the Ninja Academy under Uchiha affiliation, placing him in Naruto's class 106.
This affiliation meant that Gaara attended the Academy for basic education while remaining the Uchiha Clan's responsibility, rather than falling under direct village jurisdiction. Konoha was not permitted to investigate him in depth under the usual protections granted to clan secrets 106. Iruka became his class teacher, and Zhengye entrusted his care to Sasuke and Fugaku before leaving to help other suffering children 106.
Orochimaru examined Gaara's damaged seal and applied the Five Elements Seal, stopping Shukaku's chakra leakage while preventing Gaara from borrowing the One-Tail's chakra 104 105. Over the following year, Gaara adapted to a stable life in Konoha, attended the Academy alongside Naruto and Sasuke, and lost the hostility that had defined his childhood 129 133.
Gaara later received Orochimaru's Human Cursed Seal. During the implantation, a trace of Karura's soul power entered the seal and exhausted Gaara to the point of collapse. Zhengye and Orochimaru consequently considered locating Karura's remains to further investigate or support that soul power 134.
His apparent death and Shukaku's disappearance weakened Rasa's political leverage in Sunagakure. Combined with Rasa's failures as Kazekage, the loss contributed to the reduction of his faction's authority and renewed instability between Sunagakure and Iwagakure 128 129 132. Gaara was finally able to meet his mother, learn directly that she loved him, and release years of suppressed grief. Afterward, he accepted that Rasa and Yashamaru had lied to him and reaffirmed his attachment to Zhengye, Naruto, and his life in Konoha 203 204 205.
The reunion could last only about half an hour. Gaara told Karura about Rasa's repeated attempts to have him killed, provoking her anger and causing the sand around her to tremble 204. Personality
Gaara initially fears abandonment and struggles to communicate with others. When the children of Sunagakure fled from him, his loneliness turned into panic and violence; he begged them not to leave him alone 88.
After leaving Sunagakure, he becomes more receptive to kindness. He is shy around Sasuke, worried when Zhengye leaves, and deeply interested in the idea of having friends—especially after learning that Naruto is another jinchūriki who suffered similar isolation 104 105 106.
