Background / History
Tsunade fought alongside Jiraiya and Orochimaru on the Land of Rain front, where Hanzō the Salamander spared the three Konoha shinobi and bestowed upon them the title of the Legendary Sannin. 1
As Hashirama Senju's granddaughter and Mito Uzumaki's granddaughter, Tsunade carries exceptional standing in Konoha. The Land of Fire's daimyō formally recognizes her as the Princess of Konoha, while her medical achievements make her a viable Hokage candidate. 110 197
Following the deaths of her younger brother, Nawaki, and her lover, Katō Dan, Tsunade developed hemophobia and abandoned herself to gambling and drinking. She also fled an arranged wedding, prompting Uchiha Yato and Jiraiya to track her to the Land of Waves. 26 27
Yato recognized her condition as trauma rather than weakness. After Tsunade accepted his wager, he used Sharingan genjutsu to guide her through visions in which she saved Nawaki and confronted Dan's death. The treatment restores her confidence and allows her to overcome her fear of blood. 27 30
After returning to Konoha, Tsunade resumes medical work, assists Mito during the peeping-tom incident, and openly rebukes Danzō's attempt to blame the Uchiha Clan. 34 36 She later supports Uchiha Yato during Mito's memorial and attends his inauguration as Fourth Hokage. 111 358
Third Shinobi World War
Tsunade becomes one of Konoha's foremost Kage-level fighters during the war. She battles Ōnoki, reveals Wood Release: Entanglement, and adapts her tactics to counter aerial opponents by using Katsuyu's divided bodies as platforms. 322 323
She subsequently faces the Third Raikage in a prolonged close-range battle. Although neither gains a decisive advantage, Tsunade uses the Strength of a Hundred and Katsuyu's corrosive fluid to weaken his defenses. 324 343
When her outpost is surrounded, Tsunade accepts Hatake Sakumo's recommendation to withdraw rather than sacrifice the remaining Konoha forces. She chooses psychological warfare over direct damage when Sakumo deploys Uchiha Yato's green smoke bomb. 326
Appearance
Tsunade is noted for an appearance and figure striking enough to attract unwanted attention from local thugs while traveling. 26 When she releases the Yin Seal, black, rune-like markings spread across her skin. 482
- Her physical power is visibly reflected in the veins that rise across her arms when angered. 320
- Her combat strikes can reduce a massive boulder to powder with controlled force. 322
- She bears the Yin Seal, which releases a vast reserve of stored chakra. 482
Personality
Tsunade is fiercely independent and refuses to let Konoha's leaders decide her life for her. Both her flight from marriage and her repeated refusals to return to Konoha stem from grief, resentment toward the village's politics, and a desire to avoid being used as a pawn. 26 477 480
She is blunt-tempered and easily provoked, especially by Uchiha Yato's taunts or by Danzō's accusations. Her anger often manifests physically, from destroying a forest while venting her grief to threatening enemies and allies alike with overwhelming force. 27 34 320
Despite her temper, Tsunade is observant and practical. She quickly analyzes Yato's wording and motives during negotiations, conserves strength against Ōnoki, and agrees to retreat when an outpost becomes untenable. 323 326 477
Abilities & Skills
Medical Ninjutsu
Tsunade is regarded as the world's greatest medical ninja and is trusted with severe cases that other Konoha medics cannot resolve. 36 116 451
- Was summoned back to Konoha so the Sand Shinobi could learn medical ninjutsu from her. 24
- Can treat her own injuries during combat. 323
- Her medical skill supports her extraordinary endurance in prolonged battles. 481
- Her former hemophobia was a serious limitation until Yato's treatment. 28 30
Monstrous Strength and Taijutsu
Tsunade's close-range attacks are lethal even to Kage-level opponents.
- Uses Heavenly Foot of Pain, a devastating chakra-enhanced kick. 27 482
- Pulverizes a boulder into fine dust with a single controlled strike. 322
- Trades blows evenly with the Third Raikage despite his Lightning Armor and monstrous durability. 324
- A direct hit is considered potentially fatal even to a Kage-level shinobi without a life-saving technique. 298
Yin Seal and Strength of a Hundred
Tsunade stores chakra through the Yin Seal and can release it through the Strength of a Hundred technique. 324 482
- Releases a surge of chakra marked by dark symbols across her body. 482
- Greatly improves her healing and battlefield staying power. 324
- Requires considerable chakra reserves; extended summoning and combat can still exhaust her. 323
Wood Release
Tsunade awakens and employs Wood Release, inheriting an ability associated with Hashirama Senju. 323
- Uses Wood Release: Entanglement against Ōnoki. 323
- In the parallel world, her Wood Release can autonomously form traps, bind targets, absorb dispersed chakra, and improve her endurance. 604
- Her Wood Release is vulnerable to sufficiently powerful counter-techniques such as Ōnoki's Dust Release. 323
Katsuyu Summoning
Tsunade can summon Katsuyu, a massive slug whose division ability gives Tsunade options against airborne and heavily armored opponents. 322 343
- Katsuyu can split into many smaller bodies, which Tsunade uses as aerial platforms. 322
- Its corrosive fluid is used to reduce the Third Raikage's resistance. 343
- Katsuyu joins large-scale summoned-beast battles when the Three Sannin's conflicts escalate. 627
Equipment / Items
- Tsunade's Necklace — a necklace later used by Hashirama Senju as a hidden chakra reserve during his battle with Uchiha Yato. 612

- Mito Uzumaki — Her grandmother. Tsunade respects Mito's judgment, treats patients during their meetings, and is entrusted with matters alongside Yato and Kushina before Mito's death. 36 110
- Hashirama Senju — Her grandfather. His legacy shapes Tsunade's status, her interest in Wood Release, and his insistence that Yato protect her. 197 566 602
- Nawaki — Her younger brother. His death is one of the central causes of her trauma and hemophobia. 27 29 592
- Katō Dan — Her deceased lover. His death under her care deepens her trauma and contributes to her fear of blood. 27 29 592
- Shizune — Her chief attendant and confidante, who remains anxious for Tsunade's safety and supports her return to Konoha. 477 489
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Her former teacher. Tsunade's bond with him is strained by Konoha's political abuses, though she remains unable to wholly sever their master-disciple connection. 566 626
Parallel-World Counterpart
A second Tsunade from a parallel world appears during Uchiha Yato's later travels. Unlike the Tsunade of Yato's world, she remains trapped in grief and refuses to return to Konoha or treat Danzō despite the offer to clear her debts. 477 480
When Yato reveals that he has been ordered to capture her, she attacks him with the Yin Seal and Heavenly Foot of Pain. Yato evades, restrains her with Wind Release: Wind Rope, and eventually returns her to Konoha while she remains bound. 480 482 489
Upon meeting her counterpart, Tsunade of Yato's world recognizes the depth of the other woman's suffering and comforts her, promising that the life ahead can hold happiness rather than continued pain. 657
