Background
Following Tobirama Senju's death, Hiruzen succeeded him as Konohagakure's Third Hokage during the Second Shinobi World War. His early administration was immediately complicated by Danzo Shimura's ambitions and by Uchiha Yato's battlefield actions, which publicly damaged Danzo's reputation and turned a planned settlement with Hanzo into a surrender. 1
Hiruzen initially considered taking Yato as a disciple. Although he recognized Yato as a worthy inheritor of the Will of Fire, the Hokage lacked the time to teach him and was overwhelmed by Yato's ability to learn ordinary ninjutsu after only a few demonstrations. Yato began reproducing Hiruzen's compound-ninjutsu principles within days, ending the arrangement after roughly a month. 7
His relationship with the Uchiha Clan remained politically fraught. Hiruzen acknowledged the clan's value to Konoha and defended Yato so long as he did not betray the village, but his attitude was still shaped by Tobirama's distrust of the Uchiha. 20 45 He later assigned Yato an S-rank mission to retrieve Tsunade, partly because sending Yato out of the village would remove a persistent source of disruption from Konoha's leadership. 24 25
Fourth Hokage transition
When Uchiha Yato forced the issue of succession, Hiruzen accepted an election for the Fourth Hokage after being intimidated by Yato's Mangekyō Sharingan. He considered installing Jiraiya as a controllable successor and retaining influence from behind the scenes. 199
Yato ultimately assumed the role of acting Fourth Hokage while Hiruzen entered semi-retirement. At Yato's formal inauguration, Hiruzen introduced his successor before Konoha's gathered shinobi and civilians. 229 358 Yato subsequently appointed him chief secretary, leaving him responsible for routine village affairs while removing his authority over major decisions; when Yato was absent, the secretarial corps voted collectively rather than allowing Hiruzen to direct Konoha alone. 361
Appearance
Hiruzen is portrayed as an aging but still formidable shinobi who commonly maintains a composed, elder-statesman demeanor. He is frequently seen smoking a pipe while working or deliberating. 45 517
- Elderly during the Third Shinobi World War, with declining stamina in prolonged close-quarters combat. 265 266
- Usually carries or smokes a pipe. 45 199
- Has used a wooden staff in battle. 265
Personality
Hiruzen is politically experienced, cautious, and highly attentive to Konoha's stability. He often seeks compromise, manages public perception, and tries to preserve the dignity of allies and former subordinates—including Danzo—even when their actions create crises for the village. 10 60
His concern for reputation and control repeatedly affects his decisions. During the Fourth Hokage succession, he sought a successor he could influence; later, he openly argued that a leader should keep power firmly in hand to prevent others from taking their position. 199 356 In contrast, he can be unexpectedly earnest toward his students, treating Jiraiya as family and worrying about Tsunade's safety and standing. 455 566
In battle, Hiruzen is pragmatic and ruthless when necessary. Though he values his public image, he is willing to abandon restraint against hostile shinobi and relies on careful observation, deception, and efficient use of chakra to overcome stronger or more numerous opponents. 265 623
Abilities & Skills
Five-Nature Transformation and Compound Ninjutsu
Hiruzen is renowned for combining chakra natures into composite techniques. His compound-ninjutsu approach became a defining part of his reputation and can produce power beyond single-nature techniques. 7 579
- Created and used Compound Ninjutsu: Earth-Flow Flame Dragon during an ambush. 265
- Combines Wood Release with Fire Release to produce heated wooden spikes that pressure both defense and evasion. 579
- Organized Shadow Clones into five-man teams, with each clone attacking through a different chakra nature. 267
Shadow Clone Techniques
Hiruzen can generate a large number of Shadow Clones and employ them as coordinated combat units rather than simple distractions. 267
- Infuses clones with Lightning Release chakra; when destroyed or detonated, they discharge powerful lightning into the surrounding area. 267
- Uses clone formations for simultaneous taijutsu, kunai attacks, and long-range ninjutsu. 267
- Keeps concealed clones in reserve for later tactics. 581
- High clone numbers consume substantial chakra, forcing some clones to rely on simpler attacks. 267
Wood Release
Hiruzen possesses Wood Release and uses it as both a battlefield-control tool and a direct offensive style. His use of the ability drew suspicion from others because of its apparent strength and familiarity. 456 565
- Used Wood Release: Cutting Sprigs against Uchiha Yato. 566
- Combined Wood Release and Fire Release in close combat with Yato. 579
- Cleared combat zones and forced hostile shinobi away without necessarily intending to kill them. 581
- Used Wood Release to create cover and alter terrain during large-scale conflicts. 581
Hashirama's Secret Weapon
Hiruzen inherited knowledge of a secret Wood Release technique left by Hashirama Senju for Konoha's protection, passed down among successive Hokage. 575
- Activates the technique by reciting from a secret scroll. 576
- Summons an immense Buddha statue capable of striking Uchiha Yato. 576
- The statue's appearance caused severe structural damage to Konoha, though Yato's prior preparations prevented civilian casualties. 576
Summoning
Hiruzen maintains a contract with the monkey Enma, who aids him in high-level combat. 267
- Summoned Enma during his battle against the Seven-Tails. 267
- Coordinated directly with Enma to assess and restrain the tailed beast. 267
Sealing and Forbidden Techniques
Hiruzen is proficient with sealing operations and forbidden techniques, though some require external materials or preparation. 261 582
- Led a Konoha sealing squad assigned to restrain the Seven-Tails. 261 266
- Used an Uzumaki sealing technique to temporarily seal his own chakra and avoid detection amid obscuring coal ash. 623
- Performed Impure World Reincarnation using two White Zetsu bodies supplied by Yato. 582
- Successfully summoned Hashirama Senju and Tobirama Senju after Yato provided an improved version of the technique's formula. 582
Tactical Analysis
Hiruzen's long experience allows him to identify weaknesses during battle and adapt under pressure. 266 267
- Determined that an ambush squad was withholding support because of a wider vulnerability in its formation. 266
- Used mist, chakra suppression, sealing, and Enma's protection to evade sensory detection. 623
- Turned the Seven-Tails battle through clone coordination, multi-nature attacks, and positioning rather than brute force alone. 267

Story Role / Major Arcs
Seven-Tails operation
Hiruzen led a sealing squad against the berserk Seven-Tails after surviving an ambush by hostile shinobi. He killed the squad's leader, identified the attackers' tactical weakness, and moved to restrain the tailed beast again. 266
With Enma and a large force of lightning-infused Shadow Clones, Hiruzen surrounded the Seven-Tails and attacked through coordinated five-nature formations, ultimately defeating it. 267 The effort depleted his chakra heavily enough that he later required Yato's Heart-Saving Pill. 277
Third Shinobi World War
During the war, Hiruzen continued serving as an experienced advisor and combatant despite his reduced political power. He promised to lend Yato his remaining strength and later approved Yato's decision to personally lead Konoha's forces at Kannabi Bridge. 274 301
Parallel-world Uchiha conflict
In later parallel-world events, Hiruzen again occupies the Hokage's office while preparing ninja examinations and a secret contingency against the Uchiha Clan. He describes the plan as a last resort intended to prevent Konoha's destruction. 537
He subsequently clashes with Uchiha Yato, deploying Wood Release, Hashirama's hidden Buddha technique, and Impure World Reincarnation. 566 576 582 During the confrontation, Yato publicly accused him of arranging the deaths of Hatake Sakumo and Minato Namikaze, involvement in the Nine-Tails Rebellion, and other abuses of power; Hiruzen denied the accusations. 598
