Background

Itachi and Nao Uchiha were born one month apart, grew up as friends and rivals, graduated from the Ninja Academy together, served on the same team, and took the Chūnin Exams together. Nao valued him as an ordinary person rather than as the clan head's gifted son; Itachi later recognized that this was why he fell in love with her. 162

During the Uchiha Clan's planned coup, Itachi secretly provided intelligence to Hiruzen Sarutobi. Hiruzen ultimately ordered the clan's extermination to avert a civil war, and Itachi accepted the mission on the condition that Sasuke would be spared. 81 140 141
