Background / History

Erza was abandoned in Rosemary Village, raised by a church, and grew up without knowing her parents or having a surname. She later suffered at the Tower of Heaven, where her hopes of finding a family were shattered; the experience left her convinced that she brought misfortune to others. 17

Erza later revealed that she and other children from her village had been captured by the Dark Magic Cult and forced to labor at the Tower of Heaven. There, she met Jellal, who gave her the surname “Scarlet” and initially served as a leader she admired. After cultists beat Erza blind in one eye and tortured Jellal, she led a rebellion following Rob's death protecting her, awakened Knight Magic, and destroyed the cultists' forces. Jellal subsequently betrayed her, expelled her from the tower, and threatened the companions she left behind if she exposed its existence. 119

Referred to Fairy Tail by Grandpa Rob, Erza arrived in Magnolia as a ragged, guarded girl carrying a cloth bundle and wearing a white eyepatch over her right eye. Although she initially refused assistance and tried to handle everything alone, she joined the guild under Makarov's welcome. 15
