Background / History

Tongtian was one of the Three Pure Ones alongside Laozi and Yuanshi Tianzun. At Zixiao Palace, he accepted Hongjun as his master, receiving Primordial Violet Qi and the Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation. The formation’s reputed need for four Sages to break made the gathered great powers recognize his exceptional future combat potential. 21 22

He competed with Minghe for a Geng Metal spirit root whose sword-like leaves carried a murderous aura. Tongtian ultimately obtained it, as it was especially useful to Sword Dao cultivators. 16

After becoming a Saint, Tongtian taught the Human Clan first among the Three Pure Ones. His three-thousand-year sermon centered on formations and helped listeners such as Kong Xuan develop new insights. 103

Appearance

Even after becoming a Saint, Tongtian retained the appearance of a young man. 103

  • Sword-like brows and starry eyes. 103
  • High nose bridge and a sharp, star-concealing gaze. 103
  • Usually wears a teal-blue or azure Daoist robe. 103 346
  • His arrival is often accompanied by trembling space and the sound of swords. 273
  • After advancing on the Sword Dao, his bearing becomes noticeably sharper, more confident, and more flamboyant. 273

Personality

Tongtian is direct, proud, and fiercely protective of those under his care. He openly challenged Yuanshi Tianzun over Guangchengzi’s attempted sneak attack on Duobao, later refused Yuanshi’s decree at the Blood Sea, and warned Zhunti that further attacks on Jiejiao disciples would bring retaliation against the Western Teaching itself. 141 174 219

His principle in founding Jiejiao was to “teach without distinction,” seeking to preserve a path of survival for all beings. This conviction led him to accept disciples of dampness, egg, furred, and horned origins despite Yuanshi’s disdain. 144 154

Tongtian can be impulsive and initially showed excessive leniency toward undisciplined disciples. After Western Teaching infiltration was exposed, he entrusted Golden Spirit with enforcing sect law and accepted the resulting purge as necessary to stabilize Jiejiao. 219

His completed Sword Dao reflects his character: pressing forward without hesitation and cutting through every obstruction. Bai Jing specifically withheld help during Tongtian’s preparations because providing an easy retreat could have prevented the Dao from reaching completion. 273

Abilities & Skills

Sword Dao

Tongtian created and completed a Sword Dao independent of Hongjun’s path. Its offensive force is regarded as capable of exceeding the Battle Dao, and his sword intent can sever space, divine abilities, and even Heavenly Dao blessings. 175 346

  • Uses the Green Duckweed Sword with man-and-sword unity. 175
  • Matched Yuanshi Tianzun, who wielded the Pangu Banner, using only his sword. 175
  • Overpowered Zhunti’s Sixteen-Foot Golden Body and damaged multiple Numinous Treasures during their clash. 175
  • Severely wounded Zhunti with a sword strike launched from halfway across the Primordial World. 219
  • Upon attaining the Dao anew, manifested a river of swords and a Sword Dao phenomenon that enveloped the East Sea. 274
  • At the late second level of the Mixed Yuan Great Luo realm, could cleave voids apart and annihilate star rivers with a thought. 345

Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation

Hongjun bestowed the Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation upon Tongtian alongside Primordial Violet Qi. It was said that four Sages were required to break it. 21 22

  • Tongtian later reforged the formation so that it contained pure sharpness rather than leaking killing intent. 347
  • Suppressed Yuanshi Tianzun despite Yuanshi wielding both the Pangu Banner and Three-Treasure Jade Ruyi. 346
  • Held Yuanshi, Jieyin, Zhunti, and a monster avatar in check simultaneously. 347 348
  • Its sword qi severs opponents’ power, divine abilities, and Heavenly Dao blessings. 346

Formation Dao

Tongtian is a master of formations and used the Dao of Formations as the basis of his teachings. 103

  • Gifted Kong Xuan a Five Elements formation diagram that could rival a mid-grade innate spiritual formation in Kong Xuan’s hands. 102
  • Passed the Shangqing Great Dao to Zhao Gongming and instructed Jiejiao’s immortals in the Dao. 153
  • Personally gave formation insights to the Three Xiao Sisters before the Investiture of the Gods Calamity. 264
  • Received the Formation Dao mark from Pingxin, raising his Formation Dao comprehension from seventy to eighty-five percent in one hundred years. 273
  • Constructed a sword formation over the East Sea that withstood forty-nine Purplecloud Divine Lightning bolts. 274

Shangqing Divine Thunder

Tongtian wields and further developed the Shangqing Thunder Method. 15

  • His divine thunder clashed directly with Minghe’s sword light during their struggle over a spirit root. 15
  • After Tongtian’s Sword Dao attainment, the refined Shangqing Divine Thunder incorporated Sword Dao force, making it more powerful than its earlier form. 324

Story Role / Major Arcs

Founding and Expansion of Jiejiao

After ideological differences with Yuanshi became irreconcilable, Tongtian left Kunlun Mountain and eventually established Jiejiao’s new Daoist ground at Golden Ao Island in the East Sea. 150 151

He opened Jiejiao’s gates to all cultivators, embodying its doctrine of teaching without distinction. The resulting influx of disciples greatly expanded the sect but also created future problems with discipline and providence. 153 154

Stabilizing Jiejiao’s Providence

Tongtian sought to stabilize Jiejiao’s unstable providence by securing Heavenly Court positions for his disciples and aiding Bai Jing’s purification of the Blood Sea. 165 167 174

During the Human Clan’s rise, he temporarily used the Kongtong Seal to gather Human Clan providence, but returned it once the Three Sovereigns had completed their merits. 204

Sword Dao and Sect Reform

Tongtian’s Sword Dao surpassed Yuanshi’s strength in direct combat and shocked the Primordial World when he gravely wounded Zhunti from afar. 175 219

After uncovering infiltration within Jiejiao, he allowed Golden Spirit to enforce sect discipline. Her purge expelled nearly a thousand disciples and annihilated 171 offenders, stabilizing the sect’s fortune. 219

Severing the Saintly Throne

To free himself from the Heavenly Dao’s control and complete his self-created Sword Dao, Tongtian cut down his own Saintly Throne despite possessing peak fourth-level Saint cultivation. 273

He withstood forty-nine Purplecloud Divine Lightning bolts with his formation. When Heavenly Dao Hongjun attempted to impose a fiftieth bolt, Bai Jing’s Four Extremes Square Vessel intervened, allowing Tongtian to attain the Dao anew. 274

Investiture of the Gods Calamity

After learning that the coming calamity targeted Jiejiao disciples, Tongtian allied with Bai Jing and prepared Jiejiao through personal instruction, formations, and strategic intervention. 220 263 264

He later used the Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation to suppress Yuanshi, Jieyin, Zhunti, and a monster avatar during the final confrontation at Qishan. 347 348

Following the investiture ceremony, Tongtian withdrew from Jiejiao’s daily management and appointed Golden Spirit as vice sect leader. 355
