Background and History

Mr. Popo served at Kami's Lookout through multiple generations of guardians and trained Goku in his youth. He also guided visitors to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. He later tells Ōten that guarding the Lookout is his punishment, calling himself a sinner after rescuing Ōten from Grand Zeno and sending him to the GT Timeline 25 326.

When Ōten questions him, Popo recounts a past as Grand Angel of the Supreme Universe. He tests Ōten in combat, then agrees to teach him divine techniques on the condition that Ōten help eliminate Heavenly Demons in the Demon Domain 331 335 336.

Popo subsequently identifies himself as the Origin God, a ruler of the Origin Supreme God Realm. He says he entered the Supreme Universe during the Great Demon God's war and disguised himself as the Grand Priest beside Grand Zeno. He warns that killing King Zeno God could expose the Supreme Universe to the other realms' rulers 414 416.

At Ōten's request, Popo trains Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, and Piccolo in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. They develop individual Primordial Spirit Techniques, but even their combined attacks fail to overcome him 419 431 435.

Popo later admits that his assistance concealed a plan to collect the other rulers' Divine Crystals. He says he arranged for the Great Demon God to obtain the Dragon Ancestor Seed and attack the Multiverse, then waited for someone capable of bringing the rulers within his reach. After absorbing their crystals, he fights Ōten. Piccolo asks that Popo be spared when he is defeated, but Ōten destroys him 455 456 467.

Appearance

Popo's familiar form is a dark-faced figure seen in black clothing at Kami's Lookout. He says he adopted that form to hide his identity 326 464.

  • Original battle form: Tall, with black hair, milky-white pupils, a mark on his forehead, and a red robe 464.
  • Divine power: Appears as milky-white energy; after fully fusing the rulers' remaining power, he is surrounded by golden light 465 466.

Personality

Popo usually speaks calmly, even while overwhelming an opponent. As a teacher, he praises promising fighters, tests their limits, and gives practical instruction. He also uses warnings and a proposed wager to delay rival rulers while awaiting Ōten's return 331 433 435 437.

His later confession recasts that patience as part of a long pursuit of power. He dismisses people he considers too weak to serve his plan, including Goku and Piccolo; when Ōten begins to overpower him, his composure gives way to anger and fear 455 463 465 467.

Abilities & Skills

Divine techniques and spatial movement

Popo combines divine power with techniques that make his attacks difficult to evade or defend against 331 334.

  • Teleportation and Space Jump: Avoids barrages and reappears close enough to counterattack 333 334.
  • Strike the Cow Across the Mountain: Lands punches through space without striking Ōten directly 334.
  • Reverse Instant Transmission: Uses it to gain the upper hand late in their first contest 335.
  • Tracking attacks: Fires an energy blast and, later, a Primordial Spirit Slash that pursue Ōten 333 459.

Primordial Spirit Technique

Popo's supreme-level primordial spirit grants immense combat power and abilities he passes on, in individualized forms, to Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, and Piccolo 431 435.

  • Amplifies strength during a clash and lets Popo withstand their combined assault 433 435.
  • Primordial Spirit Wave: A milky-white shockwave used against Ōten 465.
  • Assimilation: A Primordial Spirit Realm technique he explains to his trainees, allowing individuals to combine their strength temporarily 436.

Time and law power

Popo says he created the Hyperbolic Time Chamber and demonstrates time abilities while training its occupants 431 435.

  • Time Leap: Vanishes from the four trainees' attack and reappears elsewhere; he distinguishes it from a mortal's Time-Skip 435.
  • Time stoppage: Stops time to strike Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, and Gohan 436.
  • Erasure: Uses law power to erase four incoming energy attacks 435.

Divine Crystal absorption

A Divine Crystal contains a Supreme God's essence. Popo absorbs eight other rulers' crystals alongside his own in an attempt to obtain transcendent power 455 456.

  • The absorbed power supports his Primordial Spirit True Form and later repairs his injured body 465 466.
  • Even at full power, he cannot withstand Ōten's final assault 466 467.

Relationships

  • Ōten — Rescues and trains him, then reveals that Ōten's rise helped fulfill his plan. Their final battle ends in Popo's destruction 326 335 455 467.
  • Goku — Trained him in his youth and later teaches him the Primordial Spirit Technique; Goku is stunned by his confession 25 431 455.
  • Piccolo — Former companion at Kami's Lookout and later pupil. Popo's betrayal deeply hurts Piccolo, who nevertheless asks Ōten to spare him 431 455 467.
  • Gohan and Vegeta — Train under him alongside Goku and Piccolo, developing their own Primordial Spirit Techniques 419 431 435.
  • Great Demon God Hatake Ka — Popo says he engineered Hatake Ka's acquisition of the Dragon Ancestor Seed and subsequent attack, then absorbs him as a Divine Crystal 455.
