Background / History

Before Ōten arrived on Earth, Gohan had once reached Mystic Gohan after Old Kai unlocked his potential. His peaceful life and reduced combat training caused his power to decline substantially. 5 8

Gohan first approached Ōten cautiously after sensing the unfamiliar Saiyan on Earth. Fearing that a pure-blooded Saiyan might intend to conquer the planet, he challenged him, transformed into a Super Saiyan, and was defeated effortlessly. Once Ōten assured him that Earth was safe, Gohan agreed to guide him around the planet. 4 5

Ōten challenged Gohan to reclaim his strength, and Gohan accepted because he wanted the power to protect Earth rather than continually rely on Goku. He chose to follow Ōten despite uncertainty over Chi-Chi’s reaction. 6 11

Inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Ōten rebuilt Gohan’s fighting instincts and base strength. Gohan initially failed to summon the anger needed for Super Saiyan 2, but persisted after being reminded that Goku could not protect him forever. 25
