Background / History

Orochimaru's base found the orphaned Senju Yunju in a ruined village and brought him in as experimental material. After tests identified Senju blood and rapidly growing chakra reserves, Orochimaru personally trained the child—not as a conventional student, but as a prospective vessel. Yunju was later demoted from a core vessel candidate to “long-term stock” after Orochimaru found Kimimaro and became preoccupied with the Sharingan. 1

He cultivated a network built around rescued or recruited subordinates. Kabuto Yakushi became his most trusted operator for intelligence, medical work, experiments, and espionage, while Kimimaro became his favored vessel candidate and the leader of the Sound Five. 15

During the Chūnin Exams, Orochimaru infiltrated Konoha under disguises, directed Yunju to collect bloodline data, placed the Curse Mark of Heaven on Sasuke Uchiha, and sealed Naruto's Nine-Tails chakra with the Five Elements Seal. He viewed Sasuke's Sharingan as a future vessel and continued shaping Sasuke toward that role. 4 5 11

After assassinating the Fourth Kazekage Rasa with Kabuto, Kimimaro, and Yunju, Orochimaru assumed Rasa's appearance. His subsequent clash with the Third Hokage left his hands sealed and his body weakened, increasing his dependence on Kabuto's treatment and on acquiring Sasuke's body. 17 18 39

Sasuke eventually attacked Orochimaru during the planned reincarnation cycle, absorbed and sealed fragments of Orochimaru's soul with the Sharingan, and was believed to have killed him. Orochimaru nevertheless survived within Sasuke's curse-mark chakra, later taking control of Sasuke's body and manifesting as Yamata no Orochi. Orochimaru's true form is marked by pale skin, golden snake-like eyes, purple eye shadow, and long black hair. He regularly conceals himself through Transformation Jutsu or body-altering techniques. 10
