Background / History

Orochimaru is a former student of Hiruzen Sarutobi and one of Konoha’s Three Sannin. He fought through the Second and Third Shinobi World Wars and later pursued forbidden research into immortality, bodily modification, and reincarnation 114 116 190.

He defected from Konoha approximately one year before the events described in Chapter 16. Numerous Uchiha corpses were discovered on his operating tables, including Feng’s uncle. Although formal proof was lacking, his experimental cooperation with Danzō was widely known in Konoha, contributing to the Uchiha’s suspicion that Root had abducted Feng 16.

After Feng led most of the Uchiha out of Konoha, Orochimaru participated in the massacre of those who remained. This made him a target of the surviving clan’s hatred, even after Feng chose to cooperate with him 114 193.

Appearance

  • Golden, snake-like eyes, repeatedly emphasized during negotiations and interactions with subordinates 179 273 274.
  • A tongue-flicking mannerism, displayed while provoking Feng and the Uchiha 114.
  • Black cloak with red clouds, worn when he first encounters Feng, identifying his continuing Akatsuki affiliation at that point 114 115.
  • Green, serpent-like energy surrounding his body in his independently developed Sage Mode 177.

Personality

Orochimaru’s central ambition is to achieve immortality, master every ninjutsu, and uncover the world’s fundamental truths. Ordinary political struggles interest him chiefly when they threaten his research or offer resources. Feng repeatedly secures his cooperation by offering longevity knowledge, rare specimens, and better research conditions 115 116 272.

He is calculating, suspicious, and highly adaptable. He tests Feng’s authority, prepares defenses against genjutsu, and checks meeting rooms for escape routes. When he discovers that Feng controls roughly half the Ninja World, he abandons a potential blackmail scheme and seeks protection through voluntary surrender 114 173 272 273.

His scientific detachment leads him to regard most people as expendable research material. Nevertheless, he genuinely values Kabuto’s talent and accepts Kabuto’s refusal to abandon Nonō rather than forcing him to stay. Hiruzen, Jiraiya, and Tsunade remain exceptions to his otherwise dehumanizing view of others 179.

Abilities & Skills

Living Corpse Reincarnation

A body-transfer technique developed to prolong Orochimaru’s life 114 116.

  • Repeated transfers between incompatible vessels damage his soul and leave him unusually susceptible to genjutsu 115 116.
  • Feng supplies a proposed improvement based on cloning Orochimaru’s own body, reducing rejection between soul and vessel 116.
  • By Chapter 273, Orochimaru no longer considers outside individuals necessary as replacement vessels; Junenka has consequently become a guard rather than a spare body 273.
  • The cloning route is presented as longevity, not guaranteed immortality, because the soul also has a lifespan 116.

Impure World Reincarnation

Orochimaru summons deceased shinobi and controls them through special talismans implanted in their brains 175.

  • Uses Hashirama Senju for Wood Release and Uchiha Fugaku for Fire Release and Perfect Susanoo 175.
  • Coordinates their abilities into Majestic Attire: Susanoo: Wood Dragon’s Calamity 177.
  • Their regenerating bodies sustain prolonged combat, but the technique restricts their strength; reanimated Hashirama displays less than one-tenth of his living power 176 177.
  • Fugaku briefly regains consciousness during the duel with Feng, demonstrating that control is not absolute 175 176.
  • Orochimaru cannot summon Tobirama because Feng has already secured the Second Hokage’s reanimated body 212.
  • Hiruzen’s sealing of Hashirama and Fugaku removes this combination from Orochimaru’s available arsenal 213 272.

Senjutsu and Curse Marks

Orochimaru develops a special Sage Mode through his own research rather than relying solely on inherited methods 177.

  • Infuses Fugaku’s Susanoo with senjutsu chakra to increase its size and combat power 177.
  • His enhanced formation fights Feng’s larger Susanoo to a temporary stalemate, but cannot maintain its senjutsu enhancement indefinitely 177.
  • Possesses a fully developed Curse Mark that can give recipients access to Natural Energy 258.
  • Uses Curse Marks as part of the restraints placed on a living White Zetsu specimen 212.

Snake Techniques

Snake summons provide battlefield control, chakra absorption, transport, and specimen containment 175 177 179 212.

  • Summons venomous snakes to restrict Feng’s movement alongside Hashirama’s Wood Release 175.
  • Ten Thousand Snake Formation attempts to restrain the feet of Feng’s Susanoo 177.
  • Spirit Snake Formation produces snakes that consume chakra and senjutsu energy; two unexpectedly bite Orochimaru himself during the battle 177.
  • Develops giant multi-headed snakes used in the assault on Konoha 191.
  • Secures White Zetsu with summoned snakes, venom, Curse Marks, and containment inside a snake’s body 212.

Swordsmanship

Orochimaru remotely controls his Kusanagi Sword through Kusanagi Sword: Void Blade 175.

  • Harasses and ambushes Feng while the reanimated Hashirama and Fugaku attack directly 175.
  • Feng’s Blade Storm forces the sword back during their duel 175.

Biological and Technical Research

His expertise spans cell transplantation, regeneration, cloning, bodily modification, and forbidden techniques. Feng later relies on him to integrate several branches of engineering into a military mecha 116 117 212 274.

  • Identifies Wood Release traces and powerful regenerative properties in White Zetsu tissue 117.
  • Produces medicines that increase cellular activity and strengthen Danzō’s Wood Release 179.
  • Trains Kabuto into a researcher capable of keeping pace with his experiments 178 179.
  • Is selected to collaborate on internal-organ strengthening because of his knowledge of anatomy and bodily experimentation 291.

Research Projects

Project Objective and documented progress
White Zetsu–Uchiha cell fusion Feng commissions a safe transplantation method within five years. Orochimaru and Kabuto reach human testing near the deadline, then report substantially improved compatibility in Uchiha with stronger Sharingan 116 173 188.
Cloning and longevity Receives information about self-cloned vessels and senjutsu-assisted longevity. A complete living White Zetsu later provides material that Orochimaru believes may help complete his cloning research 116 212.
Gelel Stone research Receives the stone, Hyde, and other potential research material through Kabuto. Investigates ruins in the Land of Wind under Feng’s restriction against causing trouble outside the site 258 271 272.
Giant God Soldier Mecha Tasked with integrating Seimei’s materials, Chiyo and other puppet masters’ mechanics, and Kazahana Dōtō’s Chakra Armor technology. Begins work at the Rainbow Country research center after joining Feng 274 275.
Internal-organ strengthening Feng sends Shira and reanimated Might Duy to collaborate with him in the Land of Waves, seeking to expand the Seven Heavens Breathing Method into training for the entire internal-organ system 291.

White Zetsu Fusion Results

The reported success rate increases with Sharingan development 188 189.

Sharingan stage Reported fusion success rate
One-Tomoe Over 50% 188
Two-Tomoe Approximately 70% 188
Three-Tomoe Approximately 90% 188
Mangekyō Sharingan Theoretically 100% 188
  • Kabuto reports that failed fusion should not kill an Uchiha because the Sharingan’s Yin Release suppresses the cells; failure instead causes varying reductions in strength 188.
  • Kabuto reasons that transplanted Mangekyō should provide the same compatibility benefit, drawing on Orochimaru’s experiments with non-Uchiha recipients. This remains a deduction rather than a confirmed result in that discussion 189.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kusanagi Sword — remotely controlled weapon used during the duel with Feng 175.
  • Reanimation control talismans — implanted in summoned bodies to direct their actions 175.
  • White Zetsu arm — initial biological sample supplied by Feng for regeneration and Uchiha-compatible transplantation research 116 117.
  • Living White Zetsu specimen — received as part of Feng’s payment and secured with layered restraints 212.
  • Longevity and immortality notebook — delivered in installments; covers self-cloned vessels, senjutsu, Earth Grudge Fear, Hidan’s condition, Karma, Ten-Tails jinchūriki transformation, and body transfer into an Ōtsutsuki. Orochimaru objects that the final routes lack practical detail or involve extreme danger 116 212.
  • Research facilities — after surrendering, receives access to advanced equipment, extensive materials, and dozens of Chakra-Conducting Metals, while Kabuto and the Uchiha monitor his work 275.

Relationships

  • Uchiha Feng — initially an adversary, then a transactional research partner and military ally, and finally his superior. Their cooperation depends on incentives, supervision, and Feng’s ability to suppress him 115 174 274 275.
  • Yakushi Kabuto — apprentice and exceptionally valued assistant. Orochimaru tries to recruit him permanently but accepts his decision to return to Nonō and Feng 117 178 179 212.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — former teacher and principal target of the Konoha Crush. Beneath the declared aim of destroying Konoha, Orochimaru wants to give Hiruzen a dignified final battle 174 190 213.
  • Danzō Shimura — longstanding experimental collaborator and transactional ally. Orochimaru supplies biological enhancements while exploiting Danzō’s ambitions for his own plans 16 179 194.
  • The Uchiha Clan — victims of his experiments and massacre participation. Feng’s surviving followers regard him as an enemy, but accept their leader’s decision to preserve his usefulness 16 114 193.
  • Uchiha Sasuke — helps Sasuke fuse White Zetsu cells while still associated with Akatsuki. Sasuke later repays that assistance with an indirect warning during Orochimaru’s visit to Feng’s territory 273.
  • Junenka — Kaguya-clan subordinate, formerly considered a replacement vessel and later retained as a loyal guard 179 273.
  • Rasa — prospective Konoha Crush ally whom Orochimaru ultimately kills and impersonates 174 190 213.
  • Shira and Might Duy — specialists assigned to collaborate with him on strengthening internal organs 291.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Encounter and Research Bargain

Orochimaru approaches while Feng is explaining Danzō’s manipulation to Nonō and Kabuto. He originally seeks a qualified assistant, but instead encounters Feng and attempts to provoke conflict between him and the Uchiha followers 114 117.

Feng immediately immobilizes him with the Shackling Stakes Technique, briefly forces him to kneel through weakened Kotoamatsukami, and then releases him. Rather than retain a mind-controlled researcher, Feng offers immortality information in exchange for scientific cooperation 115.

The resulting agreement centers on White Zetsu cell transplantation. Feng supplies an arm, part of the notebook, and Kabuto as a five-year apprentice; the remaining knowledge and a complete specimen are reserved as rewards 116 117.

Duel Outside Tanzaku Street

Nearly five years later, Orochimaru invites Feng to join the Konoha Crush and demonstrates his proposed trump card through a duel. He deploys reanimated Hashirama and Fugaku, his Kusanagi Sword, snake formations, and his own Sage Mode 173 174 175 177.

The battle escalates into a clash between senjutsu-enhanced Susanoo formations. Neither side secures a decisive victory before Kabuto warns that Konoha shinobi are approaching. They agree to a temporary draw and preserve their alliance 177.

Konoha Crush

Orochimaru arranges Sound Village identities for Feng’s exam team, enabling its infiltration. During the finals, he appears as the Kazekage, takes Hiruzen hostage, and launches the coordinated Sand–Sound attack 186 190.

His reanimated Hashirama and Fugaku overwhelm Hiruzen with a Susanoo-clad Wood Dragon. Meanwhile, Feng uses the invasion to destroy Root and seize Konoha’s resources rather than follow Orochimaru’s declared objective of total destruction 191 193.

Subsequent reports reveal that Orochimaru killed Rasa and impersonated him. Hiruzen sacrifices himself to seal Hashirama and Fugaku, after which Orochimaru and the Sound forces retreat 213.

Settlement of the Research Agreement

Kabuto returns to Feng, accompanied by Orochimaru, who insists on collecting the outstanding payment. Feng provides a living White Zetsu and the remaining immortality notes. Orochimaru accepts despite criticizing the proposed methods as incomplete, dangerous, or nearly impossible 212.

Surrender to Feng

Feng’s reforms make experimental subjects harder to abduct and supplies more expensive. Investigating these changes, Orochimaru discovers Feng’s enormous hidden territorial holdings. He initially considers blackmail, but concludes that opposing Feng would endanger both his life and his research 272.

He requests a meeting and pledges himself to Feng personally in exchange for research freedom, resources, and protection. Feng conditionally accepts and assigns him to the Giant God Soldier Mecha project 273 274.

Orochimaru settles his old affairs within a week. Though supervised, he enjoys no longer having to manage finances, personnel, and logistics, allowing him to concentrate on experimentation 275.

Notable Quotes

“You should know that I trust no one but myself.” 212

“But their sole leader—you, Uchiha Feng—are a builder and creator capable of reshaping the world order and redefining shinobi.” 274

Trivia

  • Feng’s intervention delays Orochimaru’s departure from Akatsuki compared with the original timeline; he still wears the organization’s cloak during their first meeting 115 273.
  • Feng’s longevity information and supply of Sharingan reduce Orochimaru’s interest in ordinary Uchiha bodies as vessels, although Feng and the Masked Man remain exceptions 179.
  • After joining Feng, Orochimaru’s former secret bases become research branches. One such branch provides early news of the Three-Tails’ rebirth 293.
