History

Following the Nine-Tails Incident, the clan was relocated to a compound on the village outskirts, placed under suspicion and surveillance, and progressively stripped of Police Department authority. Its patrol area was restricted, criminal jurisdiction involving other clans was transferred to ANBU, and its permanent squads in the village center were removed 3 17.

Under clan head Uchiha Fugaku, resentment toward the village hardened into preparations for a coup. Clan members held increasingly frequent secret gatherings at Naka Shrine, discussed mobilizing their resources, and considered alliances with other clans. Fugaku acknowledged that many members feared conflict but believed the clan had reached a critical point 6 17 20.

The coup never occurred. During the Night of the Clan Massacre, the compound was attacked, homes burned, and nearly all clan members were killed. Uchiha Itachi was directly responsible for many of the killings, while the aftermath also showed signs of ANBU involvement 24 28 30.

Three days later, more than one hundred identical, unmarked coffins were buried at a village funeral. By then, the Uchiha surname had become associated throughout the village with the massacre and its aftermath rather than the clan’s former pride 33 34.

Organization and Customs

• Clan head — Fugaku led assemblies, directed the clan’s response to village restrictions, and weighed negotiation against armed action 17.
• Police Department — A major source of the clan’s institutional influence; many adult members served in it, including Takuma 3 5 17.
• Internal security — Guards bearing marks of the clan’s internal guard unit secured Naka Shrine and restricted access during the coup preparations 9 10.
• Clan assemblies — Children under six could not attend. Older children could listen from outside; only Ninja Academy graduates and genin could sit in Naka Shrine’s main hall 17.
• Competitive upbringing — Uchiha children commonly tested one another through sparring, and talent was treated as a source of expectation within the clan 5 12 17.

Heritage

Sharingan

The Sharingan is the clan’s hereditary bloodline limit. Its awakening is generally linked to intense emotional upheaval, though natural awakenings also occur. It allows its users to perceive chakra and read progressively more of the clan’s stone tablet as its power develops 3 9 14 16.

• One-tomoe Sharingan was considered slightly above average for a child within the clan 9.
• The Mangekyō Sharingan was exceptionally rare; historically, its wielders could be counted on two hands 27.
• Mangekyō use consumes the user’s eyesight, with continued use leading toward blindness 35 47.

Fire Release

Fire Release is closely associated with Uchiha heritage and is regarded by clan members as a natural aptitude.

• The clan crest symbolizes “fanning the wind to blow flames toward one’s enemies” 3.
• Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique was demonstrated by Sasuke as a young child and treated as a notable expression of Uchiha talent 5.
• Clan children trained in Fire Release, chakra control, shuriken techniques, and taijutsu from an early age 3 12.

• Hidden Leaf Village — The clan’s relationship with the village deteriorated after the Nine-Tails Incident, culminating in surveillance, institutional restrictions, coup preparations, and the massacre 3 17 20 30.
• ANBU — ANBU assumed jurisdiction formerly held by the Police Department, patrolled around the compound before the massacre, and later collected bodies and survivors 17 20 32.
• Hyuga Clan — Fugaku considered the Hyuga as a possible alliance, though the Hyuga had chosen to cooperate with village arrangements and surrender part of their autonomy 17.
