Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Three-Tomoe Sharingan | 19 | Already possessed upon being assigned as pursuit captain; selected partly because it could track Lieyang's Lightning Body Flicker and analyze his swordsmanship. |
| Mangekyō-stage ocular evolution / Kamui | 25, 31 | Lieyang's Mangekyō genjutsu forces Kakashi's ocular power to evolve under extreme mental pressure. After awakening, he identifies his new space-time technique as Kamui and uses it to warp a scrap of paper out of sight. |
Appearance
Kakashi wears a forehead protector over his left Sharingan and carries a short blade at his waist during the renewed pursuit mission. 19 32
- Keeps his left eye covered when not actively using his dōjutsu. 19 32
- Carries a short ninja blade, reflecting the Hatake-style combat traits cited in Konoha's assessment. 19 32
- After the first defeat, his former laid-back bearing is replaced by a sharper, more restrained demeanor. 32
Personality
Kakashi remains calm under escalating danger and approaches Lieyang as a tactical problem rather than an opponent to be rushed. He carefully assigns roles, identifies the danger posed by Lieyang's high-speed assaults, and orders teammates to retreat rather than sacrifice themselves when the formation breaks down. 22 23
His first encounter with Lieyang leaves him more serious and focused. Despite severe mental trauma and the instability of his evolving Sharingan, he resumes command after awakening and accepts a second pursuit mission. 28 31 32
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
Kakashi's Three-Tomoe Sharingan allows him to observe minute body movements and predict attacks, making him one of the few Konoha shinobi capable of following Lieyang's Lightning Body Flicker. 17 19
- Tracks Lieyang's shifts in balance, body rotation, and sword-drawing motions. 24
- Identifies tactical details that other teammates miss, including Guy's concealed ankle injury. 33
- Its perception does not guarantee that Kakashi's body can react in time against Lieyang's speed. 24
- Lieyang's Mangekyō genjutsu overwhelms Kakashi's ordinary Sharingan defenses and renders him unconscious. 25 28
Kamui
Kakashi's evolved left eye grants him the space-time ocular technique Kamui. 31
- Warps a targeted object by twisting the surrounding space; Kakashi demonstrates this by making a scrap of paper vanish. 31
- The technique manifests after three days of unconscious recovery from Lieyang's genjutsu. 31
- Konoha initially considers the ability newly awakened and not yet mastered. 31
Lightning Cutter
Kakashi channels lightning chakra through his hand to destroy incoming weapons. 25
- Destroys two giant shuriken aimed at Kurenai and Hinata Yota. 25
- The recoil from the final interception throws him off balance and creates an opening in the formation. 25
Swordsmanship and Lightning Release
Kakashi is recognized for Hatake swordsmanship and Lightning Release, traits that make him a natural countermeasure to Lieyang's similar high-speed blade style. 17 19
- Carries a short blade during the second suppression mission. 32
- Uses his Sharingan to analyze Lieyang's sword timing, combat rhythm, and instinctive counters. 19 34
Shadow Clone Technique
Kakashi can deploy Shadow Clones in combat. 33
- Uses an underground Shadow Clone to attempt to seize Lieyang's ankle. 33
- Lieyang anticipates the tactic and destroys the clone before it can make contact. 33
Tactical Command
Kakashi serves as the operational leader of Konoha's pursuit forces. 19 22
- Assigns Hinata Yota to track the original body, clones, and underground chakra with the Byakugan. 22
- Positions Kurenai for genjutsu interference and the Ino–Shika–Chō team for restraint and battlefield control. 22 23
- Orders the team not to pursue alone and prioritizes withdrawal if Lieyang breaks their formation. 22 23
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Forehead protector — covers his left Sharingan when it is not in use. 19 32
- Short blade — carried during the renewed suppression mission. 32
Relationships
- Might Guy — Teammate and close combat partner. Kakashi relies on Guy to intercept Lieyang after his Sharingan identifies the enemy's first movement; Guy later carries the unconscious Kakashi throughout the retreat. 23 28
- Kurenai Yuhi — Pursuit teammate who provides genjutsu support and continuously protects Kakashi's mind after Lieyang's genjutsu incapacitates him. 22 25 28
- Hinata Yota — Byakugan-equipped teammate. Yota saves Kakashi from his uncontrolled Lightning Cutter, exposing himself to Lieyang's fatal strike. 25
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Assigns Kakashi as captain of both pursuit operations and retains him as leader after Kamui awakens. 19 31
- Shisui Uchiha — Added as a core member of Kakashi's second suppression squad due to his Mangekyō Sharingan and Body Flicker Technique. 31 32
- Uchiha Lieyang — Primary target of Kakashi's pursuit missions. Lieyang defeats the first joint force, drives Kakashi's Sharingan evolution through genjutsu, and remains the target of Kakashi's renewed operation. 25 31 32
Story Role / Major Arcs
Initial Pursuit Assignment
Kakashi is chosen to lead Konoha's highest S-rank pursuit force against Uchiha Lieyang because his Sharingan, Lightning Release, and Hatake swordsmanship are considered the best available tools for analyzing Lieyang's speed-based fighting style. 17 19
The team later expands to include the Ino–Shika–Chō formation and Root support. Kakashi establishes a coordinated plan centered on tracking, restraint, genjutsu interference, and Guy's direct assault. 22 23
First Battle with Lieyang
Kakashi opens the engagement with the Shadow Shuriken Technique, but Lieyang counters the trap with precisely placed Earth Release. 24
While protecting Kurenai and Hinata Yota from redirected shuriken with Lightning Cutter, Kakashi loses his balance. Yota saves him with Gentle Fist but is immediately killed by Lieyang. 25
Lieyang then catches Kakashi's gaze with the Mangekyō Sharingan, trapping him in a genjutsu that ordinary chakra disruption cannot dispel. Kakashi's left eye begins evolving under the pressure. 25 28
Kamui Awakening and Renewed Mission
After three days unconscious, Kakashi awakens with a new space-time ocular technique, Kamui. He demonstrates its ability to warp away a small object and immediately accepts the renewed pursuit mission. 31
One month after Lieyang's defection, Kakashi leads a smaller suppression squad alongside Kurenai, Guy, and Shisui. The mission's primary objective is to surround and eliminate Lieyang, though Hiruzen orders the team to prioritize survival and intelligence if victory is impossible. 32
Second Engagement
During the renewed battle, Kakashi identifies Lieyang's concealed strike against Guy's ankle and continues analyzing Lieyang's counters while Guy and Shisui engage him. 33 34
He concludes that Lieyang's defenses operate on instinct: Lieyang's body recognizes openings and responds before conscious thought is required. 34
