Sen raised an eyebrow as he looked at Kurenai Yuhi blocking his way.
That senior Kurenai was really well-informed. It had probably been less than ten minutes since what happened in the exam room, yet she was already waiting here to intercept him.
"Senior Kurenai, why are you everywhere?"
Sen sighed helplessly, pulled the forehead protector he had just tucked into his pocket back out, and casually tied it around his left arm as though he were wrapping a bandage.
The gesture was so perfunctory that the forehead protector, a symbol of ninja honor, looked like nothing more than a worn rag he had used to wipe sweat.
Kurenai could not help but snicker at his lazy appearance.
"You really don't have any awareness of being a ninja, do you?"
She stepped forward, reached out to straighten his forehead protector, then ruffled his messy black hair.
"Teacher Iruka was so excited just now that his hands were shaking."
Curiosity gleamed in Kurenai's ruby-red eyes as she lowered her voice and leaned closer to Sen.
"I heard you created a solid Wood Clone without forming hand seals? And it could even make clones of itself?"
"That kind of precise chakra control is difficult even for jonin. Junior, just how many secrets are you hiding?"
Sen rolled his eyes and leaned back, avoiding her breath scented faintly with roses.
"Secrets? My biggest secret is that I didn't eat enough this morning. I'm so hungry I could swallow an entire cow."
He rubbed his stomach and spouted nonsense with a straight face.
Kurenai shot him an irritated look, knowing she would not get the truth out of this brat.
"Enough messing around."
Kurenai clapped her hands, her expression becoming slightly more serious.
"You've graduated now. You can be considered a real ninja."
"With your talent, Lord Naruto will definitely assign you the best jonin instructor. You might even be sent to ANBU for training."
"So, do you have any grand dreams for your upcoming ninja career?"
What Kurenai said was exactly what Iruka had excitedly asked in the classroom earlier.
Ten minutes earlier.
Inside the exam room.
Iruka held the report card in both hands, looking at the paper stamped "Pass," his eyes reddening with excitement.
It was not only because Sen had displayed such astounding talent. It was also because Konoha had successors!
"Senju!"
Iruka suddenly straightened and asked loudly.
"You graduated today with perfect marks, proving your unparalleled potential!"
"Tell your teacher, and tell everyone! What is your dream after graduation?"
"Do you want to join ANBU and become the village's sharpest blade?"
"Or do you want to become the strongest Naruto protecting Konoha, just like the First Hokage!"
Iruka's impassioned voice echoed through the classroom.
His words instantly ignited the blood of the entire class.
Even Sasuke, who had always disliked Sen, pricked up his ears at this moment, wanting to hear what kind of ambition this person he regarded as his archrival possessed.
Naruto Uzumaki shouted excitedly, "Big Bro is definitely going to become Naruto! But the Naruto position is mine—Big Bro can only be the deputy!"
Under the gazes of dozens of shining, expectant eyes.
Sen stood on the podium and seriously considered it.
He stroked his chin, his eyes becoming somewhat profound, as though he were making a major decision concerning the future of the ninja world.
The entire class held their breath, waiting for his surely earth-shattering answer.
"Hmm..."
Sen cleared his throat and slowly spoke.
"I heard..."
"Our village's logistics department seems to have recently established a Greening Brigade?"
"I heard their job is just planting trees, watering flowers, trimming lawns, and things like that around the village every day."
Sen's eyes lit up as if he had seen paradise.
"I think that job is absolutely perfect for me!"
"No clocking in, no leaving the village, and no danger."
"Most importantly, I can work under the sun every day. It's peaceful, and I can get more sunlight."
"So, my dream is..."
Sen looked at the utterly petrified Iruka, his tone incomparably firm.
"To join the logistics Greening Brigade and become an ordinary tree-planting ninja who slacks off every day!"
Dead silence.
The entire exam room once again fell into a silence so complete that a pin drop could be heard.
Only this time, they were not stunned by shock, but by sheer disbelief.
The impassioned smile on Iruka's face shattered like a mask falling apart.
His mouth hung open, strange clicking sounds coming from his throat, but he could not force out a single word for a long time.
The students below practically collapsed in droves.
Kiba slammed face-first onto his desk, and Akamaru rolled its eyes along with him.
Sasuke's mouth twitched wildly. Treating someone like this as his archrival was practically an insult to the Uchiha Clan.
"What the hell!"
Naruto Uzumaki was the first to jump up in protest.
"Big Bro! You have such amazing ninjutsu, and you want to plant trees? Isn't that a waste?"
"What do you know?"
Sen rolled his eyes at Naruto Uzumaki.
"What's wrong with planting trees? Didn't the First Hokage make his name by planting trees too? I'm carrying on the Will of Fire of our predecessors, understand?"
After saying that, he ignored the class's ghostly expressions, turned around coolly, and sauntered out of the classroom.
Ding. Running away right after showing off—what a thrill.
Sen provided the voice-over in his mind.
Back to the present.
After hearing Sen's retelling, Kurenai was completely at a loss.
Looking at the boy seriously talking about becoming a landscaper, she could not help reaching out to touch his forehead.
"No fever?"
Kurenai withdrew her hand, torn between laughter and tears.
"What exactly is inside that head of yours?"
"You're throwing away such a bright future to work in logistics? If Lord Naruto finds out, he'll be so angry he'll cough up blood."
Sen shrugged, utterly unconcerned.
"Whether he gets angry is his business. I got my forehead protector anyway."
"Senior Kurenai, if there's nothing else, I'll be going."
"I still need to buy a more comfortable recliner to celebrate my upcoming life of paid vacation."
He waved, walked around the still-dazed Kurenai, and continued onward.
Kurenai watched his lazy figure gradually recede and shook her head helplessly.
"That brat really is an unreadable freak."
"Still, perhaps it's precisely because he doesn't fight or scramble for anything that he can control that terrifying power."
Kurenai smiled, turned around, and vanished into the woods.
Not long after Sen left the academy gates, he suddenly stopped.
Beneath a large tree beside the entrance, that iconic swing still swayed gently in the breeze.
A lonely figure sat on it by himself.
His head was lowered, making his blond hair seem somewhat dim.
It was Naruto Uzumaki.
He was not holding a forehead protector. Instead, he clutched the hem of his clothes tightly, his shoulders trembling as though he were desperately holding something back.
Sen sighed. He knew this kid had definitely failed the Clone Technique again and had been failed by that Mizuki guy.
He had not wanted to meddle.
But then he remembered how Naruto Uzumaki had diligently run errands and bought snacks for him every day over the past half month. Even if he had no merit, he had put in plenty of effort.
"Hey, blondie."
Sen walked over and flicked Naruto Uzumaki on the head.
"What's wrong? Didn't get that useless piece of metal, so you're crying here?"
