Background / History

Iruka begins teaching Class One, Year One as a newly appointed Academy teacher. On his first day, he introduces chakra extraction and is immediately confronted with Sen Senju’s uncontrolled chakra eruption, which exceeds Iruka’s own reserves as an adult chunin. Concerned that Sen could be injured, Iruka checks him for damage and orders him not to extract chakra without supervision. 4

Sen’s Senju name makes Iruka recognize the possible significance of his abnormal chakra reserves. However, Sen’s deliberate failures in shuriken practice lead Iruka to record him as a student with monstrous chakra but terrible control, taijutsu, and apparent combat value. 4 5

During the following months, Iruka largely gives up trying to curb Sen’s idle behavior, allowing him to sleep in class as long as he does not cause trouble. Sen subsequently substitutes a Wood Clone during lessons without Iruka noticing anything unusual. 6 7

Over the following years, Iruka remains Sen’s homeroom teacher. After Sen passes, Iruka excitedly asks whether he hopes to join ANBU or become a Hokage like the First. Sen instead expresses his preference for logistics and planting trees. Iruka’s excitement stems both from Sen’s demonstrated potential and from his belief that Konoha has a promising successor. 33

Following Naruto’s initial graduation failure and the overnight Scroll of Seals incident, Iruka gives Naruto his forehead protector. He arrives to announce the new genin teams with his head still bandaged from the incident. 34 37

Personality

When Sen claims that his examination answers were written through a dream, Iruka concludes that he is playing dumb. He chooses to keep watching rather than confront him immediately, and by the graduation examination is already convinced that Sen has been hiding exceptional talent. 16 31

Graduation

Iruka oversees Sen’s graduation exam with Mizuki. Although Sen fails to produce a proper illusory clone, Iruka witnesses his physical Wood Clone and grants him genin status with a forehead protector. 31 32

The clone’s ability to perform an advanced chakra-refinement sequence and create another clone further overturns Iruka’s earlier assessment of Sen’s control. Iruka celebrates the full-mark graduation as evidence of Konoha’s future strength, then asks Sen to declare his dream before the class.
