Background / History

Naruto attended the Konoha Ninja Academy alongside Sen Senju and Sasuke Uchiha. He was immediately impressed when Sen accidentally released an enormous amount of chakra during their first chakra-extraction lesson. 4

As a student, Naruto was regularly ostracized and bullied by other children and adults. After three older students beat him at the training ground, Sen's Wood Clone suspended the bullies from a tree with vines. Naruto declared the clone—and, by extension, Sen—his “big brother,” then asked to be taught its handless ninjutsu. 7

Naruto agreed to run errands, clean, and handle Sen's schoolwork-related chores in exchange for training. Sen subsequently protected him from further bullying and gave him food when he was hungry and being driven away from shops, cementing Naruto's attachment to him. 21 22

He initially failed the Ninja Academy graduation exam because he could not perform the basic Clone Technique. He later received his forehead protector from Iruka and became a genin. 33 37
