Background

Sasuke is a student of the Konoha Ninja Academy and the lone Uchiha survivor. He considers the Uchiha name synonymous with strength and initially dismisses Sen as a chakra-control failure after watching Sen deliberately botch shuriken practice. Sen's overwhelming chakra display, however, already makes Sasuke feel challenged. 4 5

Personality

Sasuke is proud, competitive, and intensely protective of Uchiha prestige. He reacts especially badly to being ignored or treated as inferior, as shown when Sen refuses his challenge and Sasuke retaliates with a Great Fireball attack. 23

His defeat by Sen transforms his contempt into fixation. Rather than accepting that Sen is stronger, Sasuke isolates himself for a day and night to search for a countermeasure, then resolves to make Sen a lifelong rival alongside Itachi. 24

Sasuke is introduced as one of Sen's classmates and is stunned by Sen's enormous chakra reserves. He responds by reaffirming his belief that the Uchiha are the strongest. 4 5

During the annual mixed-grade melee, he watches Sen frighten Gangzi into a breakdown without apparent chakra use, increasing his wariness of Sen's unknown abilities. 17

Challenge to Sen

After Naruto repeatedly boasts about Sen, Sasuke challenges Sen to a duel. When Sen refuses, Sasuke ambushes him with Great Fireball Jutsu. Sen cleaves the attack apart with a dead branch and nearly decapitates Sasuke with the remaining chakra slash. 22 23

Unable to understand or counter what happened, Sasuke spends a day and night studying ninjutsu theory. He ultimately abandons his earlier contempt and dedicates himself to surpassing Sen. 24

Team Seven

Sasuke is assigned to Team Seven alongside Naruto, Sakura, and the exceptional fourth member, Sen. He activates his one-tomoe Sharingan upon hearing Sen's name, viewing the assignment as an opportunity to watch and eventually defeat his new rival. 37

During Kakashi's bell test, Sasuke hides and attacks with Great Fireball Jutsu but is quickly subdued by Headhunter Jutsu. After Sen defeats Kakashi and takes both bells, Sen gives one to Sasuke by placing it in his mouth. 41 44
