First Appearance Chapter 5

Background / History

Jiraiya first encounters Uchiha Feng while peeping through the window of a women-only bathhouse in Konoha. Feng pursues him as a Konoha Guard and attempts to arrest him; Jiraiya stops fleeing after recognizing Feng’s Three-Tomoe Sharingan. 5

The confrontation develops into a brief fight after Feng demands access to the Mount Myoboku summoning contract. Jiraiya blocks Feng’s Great Fire Annihilation with Water Formation Wall and evades a barrage of redirected kunai before agreeing to talk. Feng ultimately signs the Mount Myoboku contract, while Jiraiya accepts Feng’s “Material-Gathering Killer Technique” advice. 6

Over the following years, Jiraiya and Feng become close friends. Jiraiya joins Feng’s attempt to locate Tsunade so she can treat Itachi’s illness, opposing Root’s effort to prevent Feng from leaving Konoha. 14

During the search, Feng pressures Jiraiya into teaching him the Rasengan by threatening to revive Kato Dan, knowing Jiraiya has feelings for Tsunade. The pair spend time in Tanzaku Town, where Jiraiya remains distracted by bathhouses and their gambling winnings rather than the search. 15

Jiraiya accompanies Feng back toward Konoha and helps introduce him to Tsunade. He hopes both to reunite with Tsunade and to keep Feng connected to the village, believing Feng could become a major Konoha asset. 18

His friendship with Feng ends when Feng moves to kill Hiruzen Sarutobi. Jiraiya intervenes for his teacher, prompting Feng to cross his name from the Mount Myoboku contract and sever their ties. 25

Following Hiruzen’s death, Jiraiya travels to Tanzaku Town to find Tsunade and urge her to succeed as Fifth Hokage. Though initially reluctant, Tsunade ultimately returns to Konoha, while Jiraiya remains committed to serving the village in his own way. 57 58

Jiraiya later pursues intelligence on Akatsuki. When Tsunade reports Uchiha Feng missing, he agrees to aid in the search despite already investigating the organization, maintaining that Feng is powerful enough that few could kill him easily. 79

After returning severely injured from his intelligence-gathering, Jiraiya warns Tsunade and Uchiha Feng that Akatsuki has gathered nearly every tailed beast and intends to capture Naruto Uzumaki, the Nine-Tails’ jinchūriki. He resolves to train Naruto and protect him through Mount Myoboku despite his injuries. 105 106

Jiraiya is later ambushed by a mysterious man who cuts off his access to chakra, natural energy, and summoning space. The attacker fatally pierces him through the chest after revealing an identity that leaves Jiraiya horrified. 151 152 Jiraiya’s severed head is subsequently delivered to Konoha in a sealed box, leading Tsunade, Uchiha Feng, and the resurrected former Hokage to investigate his apparent murder. 159

Despite this apparent death, Jiraiya later appears alive alongside Naruto during the emergence of a mysterious white sphere connected to Uchiha Feng’s evolution. The sphere absorbs most of Jiraiya’s chakra when he touches it, and a released light speck subsequently engulfs and transports him away. 195 197 He survives and awakens in a desolate clearing, where he encounters an unfamiliar Uchiha Feng and quickly establishes a friendly rapport with him. 198

Jiraiya subsequently works with this Uchiha Feng to investigate a new threat connected to Akatsuki and the Demon God Cult. He confronts the cult’s agents, learns that its self-proclaimed Demon God seeks to create endless warfare throughout the ninja world, and resolves to stop the organization’s plans. 200 201 205 212

Appearance

Jiraiya has silver, spiky hair gathered into a braid and wears a forehead protector marked with the character for “oil.” 5

  • Long, wind-tossed hair and a generally carefree appearance. 14
  • Oil-marked forehead protector, identifying him as the Toad Sage. 14
  • Often appears near women’s bathhouses while claiming to gather “material.” 5 16
  • Wears a crimson outer robe over tea-brown clothing, shinobi guards, wooden sandals, and often carries a large scroll on his back. 195
  • Has distinctive red markings beneath his eyes. 195

Personality

Jiraiya is openly lecherous and habitually peeps at women’s bathhouses, defending the practice as research material. His behavior earns him Feng’s recurring “Pervy Sage” nickname, which he rejects in favor of “Toad Sage.” 5 6

Despite his frivolity, he recognizes exceptional talent and quickly acknowledges Feng’s strength. He is willing to teach and assist Feng, helps him search for Tsunade, and reassures him about Tsunade’s medical ability. 6 14 20

Jiraiya is strongly loyal to Hiruzen Sarutobi, whom he calls his teacher. This loyalty outweighs his friendship with Feng when Feng threatens Hiruzen, and he also attempts to restrain Tsunade when she attacks Hiruzen in anger. 25 27

Jiraiya is deeply devoted to Konoha and the wider shinobi world. He persistently gathers intelligence on hostile organizations, warns Konoha of Akatsuki’s plans, and accepts responsibility for Naruto’s protection even while gravely wounded. 79 105 106

Although he retains his humor in dangerous circumstances, Jiraiya is cautious and decisive when confronting the unknown. He investigates the mysterious white sphere despite its danger, chooses to transport it to Konoha for examination, and remains determined to prevent the Demon God Cult from plunging the shinobi world into endless war. 195 196 205 212
