Background / History

Gasen was a regular soldier of the Pelagi Kingdom who possessed innate level-one soul power. Though this status granted him exemptions and preferential treatment, he voluntarily entered the army after witnessing villagers—including childhood companions and relatives—being conscripted and killed in the border war with the Star Luo Empire. His service helped spare more people from his hometown from being sent to war, and he was assigned to the comparatively safe military camp outside Nanyang Village. 6

As captain, Gasen conducted martial soul awakenings for local children. He treated failed awakenings with outward detachment, having seen the same tragedy repeatedly, but privately felt sorrow for the children condemned by Pelagi's conscription system. Zhuge Ming's unusual calmness and later resolve impressed him. When Zhuge Ming was found to have no innate soul power, Gasen promised to do his best to keep him off the battlefield until age sixteen. 1 2

When Zhao Yun descended upon the military camp, Gasen initially believed the arrival of a Titled Douluo signaled a Star Luo invasion. Although overwhelmed by Zhao Yun's killing intent and pressure, he refused to kneel, prepared to risk death so that nearby villages and Langya City might be spared. After learning that Zhao Yun represented the newly declared Shu-Han Empire rather than an invading power, Gasen reached an agreement with him and pledged loyalty to Zhuge Ming without knowing Zhuge Ming's identity. 6 7 8

Following Nanyang Village's takeover, Gasen gathered the villagers on Zhao Yun's orders and helped maintain order during the transition. Guan Yu later deposed Zhuge Zhong for poor leadership and appointed Gasen as acting village chief. 8 16

Personality

Gasen is dutiful, compassionate, and exceptionally steadfast. Years of overseeing awakenings in a poor border village left him numb on the surface, but he still grieved for children whose lack of soul power meant eventual conscription. His encouragement of Zhuge Ming and anger at the boys mocking him show that he values resilience and decency. 1 2

His strongest trait is loyalty to his homeland and its people. He surrendered neither to fear nor to Zhao Yun's overwhelming strength until he understood that the Shu-Han Empire intended liberation rather than destruction. Zhao Yun and Zhuge Ming both regard his willingness to resist impossible odds as rare integrity. 7 17
