Background
Owens was born a commoner and awakened with level-six innate soul power. He rose through cultivation and military service to become Langya City's defending general, believing that the advantages he received as a Soul Master obliged him to protect the common people who lacked innate soul power. 18
Before the Shu-Han Empire approached Langya City, Spirit Hall Deacon Su Yuntao repeatedly attempted to recruit Owens. Owens rejected the offer despite threats to his life, family, subordinates, and accumulated wealth, declaring that he would rather die on the battlefield than serve Spirit Hall. 18
Han Feng's investigation identified Owens as a principled man unlikely to surrender under intimidation. Zhuge Ming therefore chose to exploit Owens's unresolved spear-technique bottleneck rather than have Zhao Yun or Guan Yu forcibly suppress him. 19
Appearance
Owens is a broad, muscular middle-aged man with short fiery-red hair. He trains in a sweat-soaked linen shirt and carries a golden spear. 17 20
- Short, fiery-red hair. 17
- Distinct muscular build. 17
- Uses a golden spear as his martial soul. 18 20
- Has been described as over forty years old. 20
Personality
Owens is intensely loyal to the people and land of Pelagi, but distinguishes them from the kingdom's noble rulers. He opposes the conscription of common men as expendable soldiers and the treatment of women as breeding tools. 20 23
He is courageous and confrontational under pressure: he refuses Spirit Hall's threats and initially assumes Zhao Yun is an assassin sent to kill him. 18 20 However, he is also receptive to reason and self-improvement. Once Zhao Yun exposes the flaws in his spear technique, Owens accepts the criticism, reflects on it, and repeatedly requests further sparring. 21 22
After accepting the Shu-Han Empire's goals, Owens proves politically pragmatic. He helps arrange the removal of three hostile regiment commanders, recruits his trusted officers Grey and Engel, and works to secure Langya City's military and noble families. 22 23
Abilities & Skills
Golden Spear Martial Soul
Owens possesses the Golden Spear martial soul and is a five-ring Soul King. 17 18
- Can summon and recall his golden spear at will. 18
- His martial soul and Soul King strength made him the strongest known defender of Langya City before Zhao Yun's arrival. 17
- He can conceal his soul rings only after summoning his martial soul, unlike Zhao Yun, whose control is superior. 21
Spear Technique
Owens practices spear techniques daily and had been stalled at a bottleneck for roughly half a year before meeting Zhao Yun. 19 22
- Uses direct thrusts, low sweeps, and rapid high-middle-low combinations. 21
- Learns to correct the height of his lead hand, retain strength for transitions, and improve his footwork through Zhao Yun's instruction. 21
- Breaks through his long-standing bottleneck after the duel and acknowledges Zhao Yun as his superior in spear mastery. 22
Military Command
As Langya City's defending general, Owens commands the city's garrison and holds substantial influence over its officers. 22
- Can directly command 10,000 soldiers stationed within Langya City. 22
- The 20,000 soldiers outside the city were divided among five Soul Ancestor-level regiment commanders; Grey and Engel were Owens's confidants, while three others were royal agents assigned to restrain him. 22
- Uses a staged dispute over two cultivation-enhancing jade stones to isolate the three hostile commanders before Zhao Yun kills them. 22 23
- Helps bring Langya City's 30,000 defenders under Shu-Han control. 23 24
Relationships
- Zhao Yun — Initially an armed challenger and spear-technique opponent; becomes Owens's mentor and the figure to whom Owens pledges service for the protection of Pelagi's people. 20 22
- Zhuge Ming — The unseen lord of the Shu-Han Empire; Owens follows plans carried out through Zhao Yun and seeks the empire's flag to declare Langya City's new allegiance. 23
- Su Yuntao — Spirit Hall deacon whose recruitment attempts Owens repeatedly rejects. 18
- Grey and Engel — Owens's two trusted regiment commanders; he recruits them into the Shu-Han Empire after removing the other three commanders. 22 23
- Gui Tie, Sanchez, and Sun Fan — Three regiment commanders loyal to the Pelagi king; Owens orchestrates the jade-stone dispute that leads to Zhao Yun killing them. 22 23
- Han Feng — His observations of Owens's integrity and spear-training habits give Zhuge Ming the means to recruit him. 19
Story Role / Major Arcs
Spirit Hall Recruitment Attempt
Owens refuses Su Yuntao's offer to join Spirit Hall, even when threatened with the loss of his status, family, subordinates, and life. His response reveals both his commoner origins and his conviction that a Soul Master should bear responsibility for ordinary people. 18
Wager with Zhao Yun
After Zhao Yun kills a City Lord's Mansion guard and enters the estate, Owens confronts him as a presumed Spirit Hall assassin. Zhao Yun instead proposes a spear-only duel: if Owens wins, Zhao Yun will become his bodyguard; if Zhao Yun wins, Owens must join the Shu-Han Empire. Owens agrees after extracting a promise that the empire will not harm Pelagi's common people. 20
Spear-Technique Defeat and Breakthrough
Zhao Yun defeats Owens without using soul power, disarms him, and explains the weaknesses in his technique. Rather than resent the loss, Owens studies the lessons, challenges Zhao Yun again, and soon breaks through the bottleneck that had hindered him for half a year. 21 22
Defection to Shu-Han
After learning that Zhao Yun is a Titled Douluo and that the Shu-Han Empire possesses other comparably powerful figures, Owens pledges his service to protect Pelagi's innocent people. He then helps neutralize three royalist commanders, brings Grey and Engel into the new regime, and begins replacing Pelagi authority in Langya City with Shu-Han rule. 22 23
