Zhao Wuji is a sturdy middle-aged man with an ordinary appearance but an intensely imposing presence. Though not tall, his broad shoulders and steel-like musculature make him appear built for direct combat. 28

Personality

Zhao Wuji is blunt to a fault. During Shrek's fourth-round assessment, he openly admits that he intends to teach Su Ge a lesson for Dai Mubai, rather than concealing his bias behind the formal test. 28

His protectiveness toward Shrek is equally direct: he states that, despite the academy's poverty, its teachers protect their own students. He distinguishes between outsiders and enrolled students, viewing disputes among the latter as healthy peer competition. 28

His confidence can become recklessness. He insists on keeping the Phoenix-tail Crested Serpent despite Su Ge's objections, only to panic once he recognizes Chao Tianxiang and realizes Dragon Duke Meng Shu is nearby. 42 43 Even so, he takes responsibility for the students' safety, ordering them to escape during the Titan Giant Ape incident and naming Su Ge as their leader if they face an unbeatable enemy. 45

The forest expedition makes Zhao Wuji markedly more cautious. After surviving confrontations with the Unrivaled Dragon Serpent couple and the Titan Giant Ape, he insists that the group leave as soon as Zhu Zhuqing finishes absorbing her soul ring and declares that any further breakthroughs must wait until another expedition. 47

That caution extends to Shrek's later conflict with Su Ge. Zhao Wuji apologizes on the academy's behalf and tries to prevent a confrontation, recognizing the danger of provoking someone whose strength has continued to grow. His attempts fail when Tai Tan threatens Su Ge and Tang San attacks him. 105 106

Shrek Academy Enrollment Assessment

Zhao Wuji serves as the examiner for Shrek's fourth trial, requiring applicants to withstand him for the duration of one incense stick. He openly plans to punish Su Ge on Dai Mubai's behalf, but Su Ge's level 44 strength and abnormal spirit-ring configuration force him to take the fight seriously. 28 29

Despite using his first four soul skills, Zhao Wuji is physically suppressed by Su Ge. Su Ge stops a final punch just before Zhao Wuji's face when the incense burns out, preserving the examiner's dignity. Zhao Wuji passes the applicants and reports the encounter to Flender. 30 31

Star Dou Great Forest Expedition

Zhao Wuji accompanies the Shrek group to obtain spirit rings. After Su Ge captures a Phoenix-tail Crested Serpent for Oscar, Zhao Wuji chooses to keep it despite its prior hunters' claim, creating a conflict with Chao Tianxiang and Meng Shu. 42 43

Once Su Ge intervenes, Meng Shu agrees to let Shrek retain the serpent on the condition that they help find a suitable replacement for Meng Yiran. Zhao Wuji remains in the forest to assist Zhu Zhuqing after her breakthrough to level 30. 44

When the Titan Giant Ape appears and takes Xiao Wu, Zhao Wuji orders the students to retreat if necessary, entrusting their survival to Su Ge's command while he pursues the danger with the rest of the group. 45

Following the crisis, Zhao Wuji uses his Martial Soul Avatar and is left significantly weakened. He chooses to remain behind to protect Zhu Zhuqing as she absorbs her third soul ring, trusting Su Ge's message and judgment rather than leading the group deeper into the forest to search for Xiao Wu, Tang San, and Su Ge. 47

Su Ge's Departure from Shrek

Zhao Wuji is present when Flender and Yu Xiaogang attempt to arrange for Su Ge to acknowledge a teacher. Su Ge rejects the proposal outright, questioning whether Flender, Zhao Wuji, or Yu Xiaogang possesses the strength or qualifications to teach him. 50

When Su Ge, Xiao Wu, Ning Rongrong, and Zhu Zhuqing leave Shrek Academy, Zhao Wuji unsuccessfully urges Flender and the others to respond. He remains behind as the departing students make their way toward Heaven Dou Royal Academy. 51

Heaven Dou City Reunion

Zhao Wuji accompanies Shrek Academy to Heaven Dou City after it is invited to participate as an advanced Soul Master Academy. When Dai Mubai becomes consumed by anger after Su Ge dismisses Shrek, Zhao Wuji places a hand on his shoulder and tells him to calm down. 78

Liu Erlong's Illness and Shrek's Conflict with Su Ge

After Liu Erlong is severely injured and poisoned, Zhao Wuji repeatedly approaches Ye Tianxin of the Nine-Heart Begonia Ye Clan for help. He reports to Flender that Ye Tianxin has refused each request and warns that continued pressure could offend the clan and other influential forces. Flender then directs Zhao Wuji and Qin Ming to train Shrek's team while he stays with Liu Erlong. 102

Zhao Wuji and Qin Ming later accompany Tang San and Tai Tan near the Breaking Clan, where they encounter Su Ge. Zhao Wuji apologizes on Shrek's behalf and asks Su Ge not to escalate their dispute. When Tai Tan threatens Su Ge despite Zhao Wuji's warnings, Zhao Wuji tries again to intervene, but Su Ge silences him while holding Tai Tan beneath his foot. Tang San's subsequent attack ends the attempt at reconciliation. 105 106

After Tai Tan's confrontation with Su Ge, Zhao Wuji returns to Shrek with Tang San and Qin Ming. They learn that Liu Erlong has disappeared; Zhao Wuji tells Flender that Tai Tan was likely killed by Su Ge.
