Ch. 61Our Anbu has a new mission
Plot points and events
- Hibari tells the Anbu that Konoha’s Intelligence Department will handle routine counterintelligence, while the Anbu must independently investigate Kumogakure under a higher level of secrecy.
- The Hokage suspects Kumogakure may be preparing to trigger a war. The Anbu’s task is to uncover its intentions and assess how far its preparations have progressed.
- Hibari will lead the infiltration himself, accompanied by Kagami Uchiha. They will pose as brothers; Kagami’s Sharingan is useful for intelligence gathering but less conspicuous than Hiten’s Byakugan. Hiten will support them from outside and take over Kagami’s duties. They are set to leave the next day.
- After joking with Hiruzen about his successful hot-pot business and the cold weather, Hibari hears that Hiruzen wants to establish a dedicated training organization to recruit and prepare future Anbu. Hibari approves and leaves before Hiruzen can explain further, privately guessing that Danzō may be involved.
Character developments and interactions
- Hibari balances command with humor and business-minded confidence. Though he complains about the cold, he recognizes the mission’s seriousness and takes charge of the dangerous infiltration.
- Hiruzen accepts the threat as credible, supports Hibari’s plan, and remains in Konoha to manage the Anbu. His friendly banter with Hibari reveals their close, informal relationship, alongside a little regret that he did not invest in Hibari’s restaurant.
- Kagami responds thoughtfully to the possibility of war and is chosen as Hibari’s partner because he can blend in more easily than Hiten.
- Hiten initially questions why he was not selected, but accepts Hibari’s practical explanation. His rigidly respectful manner contrasts with the team’s familiarity with him.
- The conversation about a new Anbu training organization hints at a coming change in how the unit recruits and prepares its members.
