Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chakra reserves: 0.5 Kā | 41 | Ling identifies Guy’s reserves as unusually large among his peers, second only to Kakashi among those he has assessed. |
| Eight Gates: First Gate — Gate of Opening | 48 | Masters the first Gate through holiday training with Might Duy. His ordinary reserves have risen to 0.6 Kā; opening the Gate releases substantially more chakra, producing green vapor. |
| Genin | 96 | Confirmed as a newly graduated ninja assigned to Jigang’s squad. Arrives at the front after the adjustment period given to ordinary Genin teams. |
| Eight Gates: Third Gate — Gate of Life | 96 | After two months of intensive practice, can open the third Gate and shatter large boulders with individual punches. The barrage’s numbers still overwhelm him. |
| Chakra reserves: 0.8 Kā | 97 | Documented at age nine. Ling estimates that opening three Gates gives Guy at least twice this amount, although the system can extract only his ordinary reserves. |
Background / History
Academy rivalry
Guy initially joins Obito in charging at Ling to defend Kakashi. He later restrains Obito when another classroom provocation threatens to become a fight 1 9.
His taijutsu places him among the Academy’s strongest sparring students. He defeats Obito with a kick that sends him spinning through the air, then answers Ling’s insult to the entire class by promising to train throughout winter and defeat him 15.
Ling joins Guy’s vacation running routine, turning a ten-lap warm-up into an exhausting race. Guy collapses afterward but refuses to abandon his ambition to become a Chunin, even when Ling attacks his ability and his father’s reputation. Their regular training later inspires Akimichi Takashi to begin exercising independently 16 22.
Physical talent and growing setbacks
During an Academy match, Guy’s kicks hurt Ling badly enough that Ling resorts to a Shadow Clone diversion. The fight ends in a draw. Guy maintains that he would have won without the clone-assisted ambush, prompting Ling to copy his training routine and seek his physical talent 39.
Ling visits the Might household and obtains a bodysuit made by Duy. A subsequent prank targeting Guy’s personal insecurities finally breaks his composure, allowing Ling’s system to copy his exceptional bone-density and muscle talent. Their next spar lasts half an hour, with Guy retaining an advantage while Ling struggles to control his newly strengthened body 40 41.
Guy’s position deteriorates as Ling continues improving. He scores eight points on the theory examination and then loses their practical match to a single punch before he can demonstrate his skills 46.
Learning the Eight Gates
After the examination, Guy confronts two former teammates who insult Duy. They beat and humiliate him, leaving him questioning whether his father’s dedication to taijutsu has any value. Duy responds by revealing the forbidden Eight Gates Technique. Witnessing his father’s power restores Guy’s belief in their path, and he spends the holiday training intensely 47.
Guy unveils the Gate of Opening against Ling, defending both his father and his ambition to become his team’s strongest member. Ling blocks his Leaf Hurricane and defeats him with Thousand Years of Death. The defeat breaks Guy’s confidence despite his substantial improvement; afterward, he resolves to master the second Gate 48 49.
Frontline reunion
As a newly graduated Genin, Guy arrives at the front eager to prove himself and challenges Ling again. Ling turns the spar into a battlefield simulation, using two Shadow Clones to launch a combined Earth Release: Flying Gravel barrage 96.
Guy opens the Gate of Life and destroys several incoming boulders. Their density and numbers eventually overwhelm him, leaving him buried beneath the rocks. He crawls out bruised and shaken, and his emotional breakdown gives Ling another system reward 96 97.
Appearance
- Original training outfit: A green, close-fitting jumpsuit made by his father. Its stretch and low drag are intended to suit taijutsu practice 40 48.
- Modified outfit: Alters his clothing into a green fitted shirt and looser shorts after taking Ling’s misleading advice seriously. He wears this combination when attending Kakashi’s Chunin promotion ceremony 41 43.
- Gate activation: The first Gate produces overflowing chakra and green vapor. With the third Gate open, his body flushes red and radiates green energy 48 96.
Personality
Guy is intensely disciplined. While classmates socialize, he performs push-ups or squats alone; his running routine continues even when other students cannot keep pace. Competition usually turns his frustration into a reason to train harder 15 22 30.
His confidence centers on taijutsu, but it is not unshakable. Repeated defeats can make him doubt his talent and future. His emotions change rapidly between excitement, embarrassment, grief, and renewed determination, especially when he finally finds an opponent against whom he can fight without holding back 16 41 47 48.
He is fiercely loyal to his father and considerate toward Kakashi. Although increasingly accustomed to insults aimed at himself, he cannot tolerate attacks on Duy. His persistent visits to Kakashi are motivated partly by concern over dangerous wartime missions and the loss of Sakumo 40 46.
Abilities & Skills
Taijutsu
- Heavy striking power: His punches and kicks leave classmates aching for days; even Ling experiences severe pain when blocking a full-force kick 22 39.
- Leaf Strong Whirlwind: Uses this named taijutsu attack to open his Academy match against Ling 39.
- Leaf Hurricane: A powerful spinning kick demonstrated while the Gate of Opening is active 48.
- Combat awareness: Recognizes the danger of being caught between Ling and a Shadow Clone and identifies the ambush that changes their match 39.
- Limitations: Remains unable to defeat Kakashi in their documented taijutsu spars. His close-combat strength also fails to withstand Ling’s sustained, multi-directional boulder barrage 41 44 96.
Exceptional Physique
- Bone density and muscular strength: Guy explicitly identifies these as the basis of his physical advantage. Ling’s system confirms them as a genius-level talent 39 41.
- Growth potential: The copied talent strengthens bones and muscles as the body develops, making it valuable beyond an immediate power increase 41.
- Chakra capacity: Possesses unusually high ordinary reserves for his age, reaching 0.8 Kā at nine 97.
Eight Gates Technique
- Gate of Opening: Releases a restriction on chakra extraction, sharply increasing output 48.
- Gate of Life: His highest documented Gate; enables him to smash three-to-four-meter boulders with punches 96.
- Physical risk: Learning the first Gate involves enduring injuries. The third is described as the last Gate he can open without risking serious harm 48 96.
- Limits: Greater chakra output does not automatically close the gap with Ling, who defeats both his first-Gate and third-Gate performances 48 96.
Academic and Ninjutsu Weaknesses
- Theory: Receives eight points in the final theory examination 46.
- Transformation Technique: Still has not learned it when Ling challenges him during their weighted spar 39.
- Uneven skill profile: Yamano regards Guy and Ling as the class’s leading practical fighters but poor candidates for command because of their theoretical performance 46.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Training weights — Wears weights on his arms and lower legs. Removes some before sparring because they slow movement while adding dangerous force to strikes 39.
- Father-made training clothes — Duy regularly makes and replaces the family’s bodysuits; Guy later alters his own clothing himself 40 41.
- Unarmed combat preference — Chooses familiar taijutsu rather than a kunai when Academy sparring begins allowing ninja tools 48.
Relationships
- Might Duy — Father, taijutsu teacher, and source of Guy’s belief in perseverance. Reveals the Eight Gates when Guy begins doubting their way of life and helps him train the technique 16 47 48.
- Uchiha Ling — Classmate, regular training partner, and antagonistic rival. Their competition motivates Guy, but Ling also deliberately humiliates him and exploits his breakdowns to acquire physical talent and chakra 16 39 41 48 97.
- Kakashi Hatake — Rival and friend whom Guy repeatedly challenges and checks on. Guy worries that Ling’s provocations could worsen Kakashi’s emotional condition 40 41 43.
- Obito Uchiha — Classmate whom Guy restrains during a confrontation and decisively defeats in sparring 9 15.
- Akimichi Takashi — Classmate inspired by Guy’s training discipline; later cautions him against underestimating Stone Ninja 22 96.
- Jigang — Chunin squad leader responsible for Guy after graduation 96.
- Shiranui Genma and Ebisu — Fellow Genin assigned to Jigang’s squad 96.
