Ding Zhigang serves as Qinglin County's chief constable under Luo Peiyun. He was dispatched alongside Weapon-Forging Hall Master Lu Anfu to investigate the water bandits' attempted assassination of Fang Zhixing. During the inquiry, he examined Fang's background, questioned him about Guo Dingshan and the missing Iron Mountain Sect disciples, and delivered his findings to Luo Peiyun. 61

After Fang was appointed to a command position in Qinglin County, Ding escorted him through the county town, showed him the barracks and his assigned courtyard, and offered to arrange domestic staff for him. 63

He later lent Fang the Thirteen-Form Battle Banner Saber Art, personally demonstrated its second-level forms, and sparred with him. Ding disarmed Fang during their match, though he encouraged him by saying that he would eventually surpass him. 80

Ding proposed using Fang as bait to draw out the assassins targeting him. The operation led to the capture of Guo Hongying, whom Ding identified as Guo Dingshan's sister; he subsequently led her interrogation at the yamen. 81 83
