History

Uchiha Clan Annihilation

Konoha entered a period of internal instability following the destruction of the Uchiha Clan. Itachi accepted responsibility for the massacre, departed the village, and was designated a traitor subject to Konoha's highest level of pursuit. Danzō viewed the clan's fall as an opportunity to secure his own political position. 1 5

The village's apparent loss of Uchiha combat power encouraged the other major villages to regard Konoha as vulnerable. Uchiha Mu secretly delivered intelligence about the coming assault, allowing Hiruzen Sarutobi to mobilize Konoha's clans and intercept the attackers before they reached the village. 6 11

Four-Village Assault

An alliance led by the Lightning, Earth, and Mist forces launched an attack while Konoha was weakened. Hiruzen personally led the response alongside elite ninja from the Hyūga, Nara, Akimichi, Yamanaka, Aburame, and Inuzuka clans. 6 7

The Fourth Mizukage's half-tailed-beast transformation threatened the village directly, while Mu later assumed the form of the Three-Tails and turned a Tailed Beast Ball against the attacking alliance. 7 9

Chunin Exams and the Konoha Crush Plan

Konoha hosted the Chunin Exams under the shadow of Orochimaru's conspiracy with Sunagakure and the Hidden Sound Village. Hiruzen assigned Mu, operating under the ANBU codename Shadow, to monitor and counter the plot. 14 16

The invasion began after a barrier isolated the examination grounds and allied Sand and Sound forces attacked the village. Orochimaru intended to exploit the chaos, test Mu's strength, and seize Uchiha ocular abilities. 24

Konoha sustained extreme damage during the conflict. Orochimaru summoned Hashirama and Tobirama Senju through Impure World Reincarnation; their battle with Mu devastated much of the village, while Hiruzen used the Reaper Death Seal to send the reanimated Hokage back to the Pure Land and seal Orochimaru's hands. 28 29 30

Danzō's Fall and Recovery

With Hiruzen gravely injured, Konoha's leadership temporarily fell into disarray. Danzō used the aftermath to order Root's ANBU to ambush Mu, but Mu destroyed the force and defeated Danzō himself. 31 32

Danzō was imprisoned and Root was destroyed, removing a major internal threat. Konoha's jonin thereafter recognized Mu as the village's protector and pillar of support. 32 33

Tsunade later returned to Konoha, accepted the position of Fifth Hokage, restored order, treated the injured, rebuilt damaged areas, and expanded the village's medical system. 41 42

Leadership

Organizations and Resources

• ANBU — Konoha's covert ninja organization. Mu joined after overwhelming the ANBU assessment team and later operated within it as Shadow. 12 14 16
• Root — Danzō's secretive force, used to pursue his personal ambitions and attack Mu after the invasion. It was destroyed following Danzō's defeat. 31 33
• Scroll of Sealing — A guarded repository of forbidden techniques, including the Multiple Shadow Clone Technique, Impure World Reincarnation, Eight Gates, Mutually Multiplying Explosive Tags, Flying Thunder God Technique, and Reaper Death Seal. 7
• Major clans — The Hyūga, Nara, Akimichi, Yamanaka, Aburame, and Inuzuka clans supplied elite personnel during Konoha's defense against the four-village assault. 6

Relationships

• Uchiha Mu — Initially regarded with caution due to his hidden strength and Uchiha heritage, Mu became Konoha's decisive defender during successive crises. He joined ANBU, protected the village against Orochimaru, defeated Danzō, and was recognized as Konoha's guardian; however, he refused formal titles and remained detached from village politics. 11 27 32 33
• Uchiha Sasuke — One of the last surviving Uchiha associated with Konoha after the clan's destruction. His departure to seek Orochimaru's power remained a major concern for Naruto and the village. 30 41 42
• Orochimaru and the Hidden Sound Village — Hostile forces responsible for infiltrating the Chunin Exams and initiating the Konoha Crush Plan. Orochimaru fled after his hands were sealed. 24 30
• Sunagakure — Participated in Orochimaru's invasion plan, but later sent Temari and Kankurō as representatives in a gesture of goodwill toward Mu and Konoha. 24 33
• Hidden Cloud, Stone, and Mist Villages — Previously part of the hostile pressure against Konoha after the Uchiha Clan's destruction; their representatives later brought gifts and paid respects at Konoha's gates. 6 33 34
• Akatsuki — Its members Itachi and Kisame infiltrated Konoha, while Tsunade was warned that the organization remained an impending threat. 35 42
