Background

Naruto steals the Scroll of Sealing hoping to learn a technique that will let him pass the Genin Exam and become Hokage. Mizuki pursues him for the scroll, but Uchiha Mu intervenes, protects Naruto, and recovers it. Mu subsequently identifies Naruto as the world’s child of destiny and the Nine-Tails’ jinchūriki, then secretly teaches him a forbidden technique. 12 13

Naruto quickly comes to admire Mu’s strength. He trains with the Shadow Clone Jutsu and vows that he will one day become as strong as Mu while pursuing his own goal of becoming Hokage. 15

During the Chunin Exams, Naruto uses Shadow Clones in battle and attempts to protect Rock Lee when Gaara loses control to Shukaku. Mu saves Naruto from Shukaku’s attack, leaving Naruto even more determined to gain strength and protect his friends. 19 21

Personality

Naruto is impulsive and ambitious, initially believing that mastering powerful techniques and passing the Genin Exam will bring him closer to becoming Hokage. He is not reckless to the point of ignoring danger, however; when Mu confronts him over the Scroll of Sealing, Naruto recognizes that Mu does not mean him harm. 12

He is fiercely protective of others. Naruto places himself between Kabuto and Tsunade despite being overpowered, later supports Jiraiya against Orochimaru, and repeatedly risks himself for Sasuke. 38 39 41

His greatest motivation is his bond with Sasuke. Even after failing to stop Sasuke’s departure, Naruto refuses to abandon him and turns that failure into the resolve to train harder. 41 43
