History

Warring States Era

Madara was the eldest son of Uchiha Tajima and the older brother of Izuna. As a long-haired youth with three-tomoe Sharingan, he was already regarded as one of the Warring States era's foremost Uchiha prodigies. During a major Uchiha–Hyuga battle, he faced Hyuga Tenjin while their respective clan heads fought elsewhere. 1

After Black Zetsu desecrated Uchiha corpses by stealing their Sharingan, Madara swore vengeance on behalf of his clan. His hatred of Black Zetsu remained a defining grievance for years, and he later concluded that Black Zetsu was a foreign shinobi. 3 114

Despite the Uchiha–Senju conflict, Madara had once been close to Hashirama Senju. As children, they dreamed of founding a village where many clans could coexist. He privately hoped the Uzumaki Clan's village-building efforts might succeed because they resembled that shared ideal. 11

Madara's rivalry with Hashirama intensified over the Ninjasteel Mine. He rejected Hashirama's proposal to divide the resource equally, choosing battle instead. When Mito and the Uzumaki Clan joined the Senju, Madara withdrew to gather reinforcements. 37 38

Rise as Clan Head

Madara awakened his Mangekyō Sharingan after Uchiha Tano was abducted by Shusen's Shadow Clone. He and Izuna awakened simultaneously, driven by their distress over Tano. 61

He later succeeded Tajima as Uchiha Clan head. Although he continued to seek an end to the Warring States era, he believed that a peaceful village could only be built after the Senju Clan had been destroyed. 100 160 165

Tajima's death at Kazama Gorge was a turning point. Madara gained the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan afterward, apparently through his father's eyes, and acquired power capable of challenging Hashirama directly. 154

Conflict with the Masked Hero

Madara first fought the Masked Hero after Shusen deliberately provoked him into a spar. He used enhanced Fire Release, Tsukuyomi, taijutsu, and Susanoo, but was decisively outmatched by Shusen's Tenseigan Chakra Mode and Eight Gates techniques. 130 131 132

During their second battle, Madara deployed his Complete Body Susanoo, Amaterasu, and overwhelming chakra attacks. Shusen defeated him with Sage Art: Planetary Devastation but saved him from falling to his death, intending to force the Uchiha Clan's surrender rather than execute him. 166 168 169

The Uchiha Clan's pleas and Hashirama's appeals persuaded Madara to surrender and help establish a shinobi village. However, Izuna's death at Tobirama's hands immediately reignited Madara's hatred. Though he demanded revenge, he stopped Hashirama from sacrificing himself and temporarily allowed Tobirama to live. 170 171 172

Defection and Death

After Konoha was founded, Madara received command of the Police Department. He later left the village after Tobirama became Second Hokage, believing the Senju–Uchiha conflict would eventually return and destroy his clan. Most Uchiha chose to remain in Konoha. 176 183 185

Madara eventually returned and attacked Konoha, including the Ninja Academy. He then drew Hashirama into a final battle at Kazama Gorge, summoning and controlling the Nine-Tails with Majestic Attire Susanoo. 190 191

Shusen intervened to protect Hashirama and Konoha. After an overwhelming battle, Shusen killed Madara by punching through his chest. Shusen later removed Madara's eyes and burned his body to ashes, preventing a future Impure World Reincarnation revival. 193 194

Personality

Madara was intensely proud, competitive, and certain of his own strength. He repeatedly declared confidence that he could defeat Hashirama, Shusen, or both, even when his own elders feared the consequences of war. 160 191

His ambition was inseparable from his concern for the Uchiha Clan. He could be harsh toward clan elders and unwilling to compromise, yet the clan's loyalty to him was genuine; their pleas for his life and leadership were central to his temporary surrender. 160 169 170

He never fully abandoned his childhood wish to end the Warring States era. However, grief over Tajima and Izuna hardened that wish into a belief that the Senju had to be eliminated first. His capacity for attachment remained evident when he could not let Hashirama die, even after demanding vengeance for Izuna. 165 171
