Background / History

The clan is one of Konoha's founding families and possesses the Sharingan, a bloodline limit regarded as among the shinobi world's foremost ocular techniques. Its relations with the village leadership deteriorate after the Nine-Tails incident, ending the prospect of full integration that Fugaku had hoped to achieve under the Fourth Hokage's administration 39.

On the night of the planned clan massacre, Itachi Uchiha begins systematically killing his own relatives under orders connected to the Third Hokage and Danzō. Root attacks the compound while Danzō expects to seize the dead clansmen's Sharingan for his research 39 42. The operation collapses when Junichi Uchiha returns from another world, kills Itachi, awakens the Mangekyō Sharingan, and leads the surviving clan members against Konoha's attacking forces 40 47.

Fugaku steps down after accepting responsibility for his failures and for Itachi's betrayal.
