Background / History

Rayleigh was the famed right-hand man of the Pirate King and a member of the Roger Pirates. Though the crew had become history by the time of the story, he remains nostalgic about Roger and agrees that Roger's final declaration began the Great Pirate Era 6 7.

He is present with Shakuyaku when Hancock contacts Amazon Lily after being rescued. Rayleigh initially considers the sisters' survival a miracle, since the circumstances suggested they had already been beyond saving 6.

After meeting Junichi Uchiha at Sabaody, Rayleigh agrees to serve as the reward for Junichi's rescue of Hancock and her sisters. Although he first declines because he does not consider himself qualified to teach swordsmanship, he accepts Junichi as a student for up to six months after learning that Junichi seeks broader combat guidance 7.

Rayleigh takes Junichi to an uninhabited volcanic island and introduces him to Armament and Observation Haki. Junichi's near-immediate awakenings repeatedly overturn Rayleigh's expectations; after seven days of training and hunting-based combat practice, Rayleigh concludes that he has nothing further to teach him and ends the arrangement early 8 9 11 13.

Recognizing that Junichi still needs formal swordsmanship instruction, Rayleigh calls in a favor from Dracule Mihawk and arranges for Mihawk to train him. He later supports Junichi's decision to enter the Marines, toasting him as a future Navy admiral 15 30.

Personality

Rayleigh is relaxed, sociable, and fond of drinking; after meeting Junichi, he casually invites him to Sabaody's finest liquor. His manner can shift sharply when training is involved, however. He is stern about the dangers of forcing Haki development before the body is prepared, stressing gradual progress and the consequences of impatience 7 8.

Despite his confidence in his own judgment, Rayleigh is willing to revise his views when presented with evidence. Junichi's rapid Haki development leaves him shocked, but he openly acknowledges the youth as an exceptional prodigy rather than dismissing what he has witnessed 9 11 12.
