Chapter 995: “A Request”
- Sokovia’s civil war escalates: Stark watches Hydra forces overrun Sokovian troops and attack government buildings. Frank argues Hydra is creating disorder to buy time for someone, not trying to win. Stark is disheartened by the civilian suffering and the seemingly endless cycle of war. Alvin tells him not to blame Steve, who will do what he can against Hydra, and considers going to Sokovia to help Professor Wilson and the others.
- Doom asks for support: Raymond calls to explain that Victor von Doom, newly appointed Sokovia’s prime minister, wants Alvin’s help. Doom has recruited over 15,000 mercenaries and may be able to suppress the fighting, but he wants lasting security for the country. His proposal is for Alvin’s Helicarrier to remain over Sokovia for two months as a visible deterrent. In return, Sokovia would provide the Avengers with land for a base and fund a $200 million foundation for Alvin’s school.
- Alvin agrees, but refuses the offered rewards: He approves the Helicarrier staying in Sokovia, but says his school doesn’t need the money and the Avengers should purchase their own land. He limits his commitment to the Helicarrier’s presence and hopes Doom can rebuild the country. Raymond explains that Doom is a Sokovian prince whose mother brought him to the United States; despite having opportunities to return earlier, Doom has now taken power out of love and responsibility for his homeland.
- Alvin’s priorities become clear: Stark questions why Alvin would refuse the chance to gain influence over a prime minister. Alvin says he already has the happiness he wanted and acts to preserve it. His school, too, should be healthy and able to thrive without relying on him.
Character developments and interactions
- Alvin shows practical compassion without seeking political influence or profit. He recognizes that accepting Doom’s request also acknowledges his position, but chooses to help while setting clear limits.
- Stark is troubled by the war and surprised by Alvin’s refusal to capitalize on Doom’s dependence. Their conversation highlights the contrast between Stark’s strategic perspective and Alvin’s personal priorities.
- Raymond serves as Alvin’s political adviser, outlining the risks and benefits without making the decision for him. He sees Alvin’s reluctance to profit as a defining, if frustrating, trait.
- Doom, though off-page, is presented as ambitious and politically astute, yet deeply committed to Sokovia. He seeks a powerful ally and uses a favorable bargain to secure protection.
- Frank offers a tactical reading of Hydra’s actions, shifting attention from the fighting itself to the possibility of a larger plan.
Significant themes
- Responsibility and leadership: Doom returns to serve his country; Alvin helps while refusing to take control or demand payment.
- Power and political neutrality: The Helicarrier is valuable partly because Hell’s Kitchen has no formal allegiance, and giving it to another power could create complications.
- Personal happiness versus ambition: Alvin values the family and community life he has built over wealth or influence.
- Sustainable institutions: Alvin wants his school to succeed independently of him, rather than depend on his personal resources.
